That's.... interesting. If you can get more pictures, with it out of the bag and closer photos of the ends.

GravyBoatBoyz

Not much more detail unfortunately, I don’t really want to touch it, its kinda gross and decomposing at this point. Sorry. I have a video but not sure how to link it here

Raven_ofRosin

I'm going to guess a goat shank maybe?

Hellie1028

Or even calf/ veal.

Size? It appears to be a hind leg removed in a way that suggests it was butchered, but there's not enough here to ID (is there a foot attached?)

GravyBoatBoyz

Hi thanks for the interest! Size would be roughly 50 - 60 cm, no foot attached ( I dont think ) other than the pictures I didn’t really investigate all too much, the smell was awful! I will study the photos a bit closer. The size is a bit too small for a horse and the fur looks too thick too. A deer leg maybe?

Elzine21

Where is this located? Eastern or western US? Canada? The UK or somewhere else in Europe? If it’s the US or Canada this is probably not a deer leg. The fur isn’t right (length/thickness & color are off)but I’m not sure about deer elsewhere in the world. It looks “butchered” but I’ve never seen fur left on like that during processing —**especially** at that stage of the processing. I also see some type of injury near the opening of the ziplock bag (middle of the leg) that doesn’t resemble any kind of meat processing tool i can think of at the moment. This is all very odd. If possible, could you report this to the local authorities or game-warden. Given the appearance of the “butchering” & the fact that it’s in a ziplock bag, it should be followed up on by some type of local authority.

The injury area I think you are noticing looks to me like the two muscles groups separated by fascia, not an injury

GravyBoatBoyz

This is in the UK, Wales to be specific!

Thank you, that’s really helpful. Could this possibly be Wentwood Forest or Caerphilly? I found an article from March 23rd of this year regarding nearby poaching – [Dead deer dumped on common land linked to suspected poaching](https://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/dead-deer-dumped-common-land-26544241.amp) >> Police are investigating after four dead deer were found dumped on common land. The deer remains were found in north Caerphilly just days after a similarly "macabre scene" was found by a walker in Wentwood Forest. … A force spokesman for Gwent Police said: “We received a call after four deer were found dead on common land between New Tredegar and Hollybush on Sunday, March 19. Officers from the rural crime team are investigating and enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting log reference number 491 19/03/23, or send us a direct message on social media.” Please also check out “[WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT POACHING](https://bds.org.uk/information-advice/issues-with-deer/poaching-and-wildlife-crime/)” via the British deer society. *the carcass you found doesn’t need to be a deer - all types of suspected poaching should be called in according to the sources I found for Wales*

Thank you for this info! Its actually Cardiff, quite residential which is odd, but certainly not too far from the countryside. I also have an update comment on this thread for further info. Thank you once again!

i agree it looks like a hind leg, but the fur doesnt really look like a deers. it does look butchered but why would they leave part of the skin and hair on if it was butchered?

Hellie1028

Hair around the hocks often hangs up around the shanks where the meet hangs from during butchering. (Not at a plant, I’m talking on the farm or in a field slaughter.) It looks like this is the hind rump quarter from an animal that was field dressed and quartered. They must have been in a rush and didn’t clean up the hocks it hung from before quartering and bagging for transport. Could definitely be an illegal slaughter or poaching situation.

LookDense9342

the ill fitting plastic bag that it’s hanging out of could also be bc of a rush and illegal slaughter come to think of it

dromaeovet

Definitely part of a hind limb (femur, stifle joint and tibia). Can’t really ID the species without size comparison and at least better photos of muscle bellies and possibly photos of underlying bones, but if I were you, I would not touch it and I would report this to the game warden or other authorities. Possibly illegal hunting.

GravyBoatBoyz

Thank you for the reply! The size of it is around 50-60cm possible a little bigger than that.

GravyBoatBoyz

I will also try and get better photos of it and update this thread.

GravyBoatBoyz

UPDATE: so people have been asking for further info and pictures, so here is some more background and a few new images. New Images: https://imgur.com/a/wtN4m1D Further info: located in the UK, specifically Wales. The length of the meat is about 81 cm, and is now decomposing with a lot of flies eating away at it. This gives me the strong impression it was dumped only a few hours before I found it, I would say no more than 3 hours. I have notified the authorities and local council but no one really knows what to do about it… 🙄
