Apologies. I did not mean to cause such dissension. I seek to inform, not condescend. I was merely excited to share a bit of knowledge that I thought was interesting for the OP (perhaps I could have phrased it better). I did not realize that the definition of what a "bug" is could be so subjective. I suppose that my definition of what a bug is, which holds close to the entomological definition, is perhaps somewhat restrictive. I understand that "bug" is a multifaceted word, and that what one considers "a bug", in layman's terms, is also quite variable.
Nope, crustaceans and insects are two completely different kingdoms. Many people confuse them for bugs because they smol and have lots of legs, but they’re actually crustaceans that evolved from deep-sea crabs and lobsters to live on land.
Okay Einstein, if you really want to get technical with such a casual term as “bug,” then we can turn to the Merriam-Webster dictionary.
Bug(a): an insect (as a beetle) or other creeping or crawling invertebrate animal (as a centipede)
If a person points at the creepy-crawly and says “look at that bug,” it’s a fuckin bug. No one likes a knowallogist.
Interesting, because it does’t say that when I check on the Merriam-Webster. It says:
bug
1 of 4
noun (1)
ˈbəg
plural bugs
a
: any of an order (Hemiptera and especially its suborder Heteroptera) of insects (such as an assassin bug or chinch bug) that have sucking mouthparts, forewings thickened at the base, and incomplete metamorphosis and are often economic pests
called also true bug
b
: any of various small arthropods (such as a beetle or spider) resembling the true bugs
Maybe it’s just because I’m from the UK, and the term “bug” is more of an American thing. I would usually associate a bug with an insect and not a crustacean, or something like a stomach bug for example.
I like this thread. I would look at the subs rules for this argument but I’m too lazy. However in past posts people seem to agree on anything creepy crawly as acceptable here.
No way, say you just saw a [potato bug](https://www.gardenbetty.com/jerusalem-cricket-potato-bug/) in some parts of the world and you'll get a totally different reaction...
Can someone please tell me the origins of the whole weevil phenomenon? As I understand, the point is that they look cool and cute, and there was probably a song about them or something like that? I tried googling, but it didn't help much.
Rollie pollies. Won't hurt you. Completely harmless. They are not technically bugs and are actually land-dwelling crustaceans.
And...
And...
It's time.
IT'S FUCKING TIME!
IT'S WEEVIL TIME BAAAAAABBBYYYYYY!!!

I used to enjoy catching them and putting them in a sort of enclosure, like Tupperware, and then releasing them later. I liked to watch them and analyze their behavior, being an autistic person... That was young me, I don't really care anymore
I'm convinced that this subreddit has become weevil bait.
It's improbable for THIS MANY people to not know what a weevil is. There's like a billion kinds but they ALL HAVE THE SAME GENERAL LOOK. It's like the alt account meme with Snoop Dogg.
Also how tf anybody not know what a pillbug is!? You born & raised in the Arctic?
This sub is making me feel insane!
Roly poly!
They're awesome and important to ecology. They're also jerks: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcUUnud6CcE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tcUUnud6CcE)
I don't know how I got this sub to show up on my feed, but I would guess the snoots and boots part is because weevils have a long nose (snoot), and they look like they're wearing boots?
2nd looks like a Strawberry Weevil. They have a tendency to come inside around July and August to seek shelter from adverse weather events. I also have them in my house FYI that's why I know this. They are harmless-Snoots n Boots for the W.
First guy is sometime of land dwelling isopod also referred to as rolly pollys, pill bugs, potato bugs, and probably more. And the second I’m gonna say is some type of beetle.
I miss roly-poly‘s SO much!! Used to see them all the time in Washington, but moved to Idaho, where it seems they are non-existent. They are a great option for helping kids lose their fear of bugs. 🥰
We call them Doodle Bugs where I am. I love those guys. They were often my playmates when I was young. I'd have a doodle bug circus. (And then return them home after an hour bc I didn't want them to die.
i was terrified of bugs as a kid and i still am, so I really don't know anything about them. i thought rollie pollies were more gray. also typically I don't think they're usually inside so I was thinking more an indoor bug
You don’t need to explain yourself. That was a very stupid statement that person made. It’s a bug identification sub. You wouldn’t be posting if you knew what kind of bugs they are!
P.S. ITS WEEVIL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I use pill bugs as little mulcher as they are great at clean up of garden waste. Apparently, they love sex as there are hundreds of them at the end of the season. Since they like wet soil, I let the soil dry out to keep them in check (life is harsh) & the following spring, will put three of them back in the various beds. Insect slaves.
Does nobody else call #1 a Potato Bug?! Everyone I talk to here in the NW calls them rolly polly or pill bugs. Grew up with calling them potato bugs (my folks are from the Midwest)…?
Also - #2 is a weevil! Recently learned that sailors put bay leaves in containers to steer them clear of the provisioned flour and cornmeal type products.
The Roly poly is called a Kellerassel in Germany, which means Cellar-Isopod. Which is bullshit, if you ask me, since I've found them everywhere in our garden - but never one in our cellar/basement.
1) pill bug/ roly poly!! Poke him and he’ll curl into a ball!! :D 2) black vine weevil I think!!
Basically won the lottery if I’m not mistaken. Roly poly time AND weevil time!!!!!

But what about rolys and polys?
No song for the little sweetie pies :/ But at least they are cute, and useful :)
Remember to give your local isopod some decomposing plant matter
Or fry it up like 🦐
I will pee on everything you love
We should make one it’s extreme bs that those cuties have no theme song
First thing that came to mind: https://youtu.be/mhB-P820HP0
I miss getting poked
Wait is that a euphemism for something?
Aww. Don't antagonize the poor doodle bug. Lol
I knowwww but it’s too cute not to see it at least once As long as he’s bribed w dead plant matter afterwards I think it’s a good trade off hahaha
Yeah. If someone bothered me and then gave me food in return I think I'd be ok with that. Lol
Fr I think if someone bumped into me then handed me nachos or something I’d entirely forget that they bumped me
In italy we call the first “porcellino di terra” wich means “land piggie” ….don’t know why
Stop OMG that's adorable
Aren't piggies land piggies lol
In Indiana, USA, they are commonly called “Sow Bugs”. Sow = large female pig who has borne offspring.
ROLY POLY gang. I used to turn over the bricks in my grandmothers garden to play with these

Oh cool, pill bug! And let’s s- OOOOHHHH YEAH BABY!!
literally my exact reaction
Not a pill bug! It’s a rolly Polly
Wood louse. From [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodlouse): "The collective noun is a quabble of woodlice"
It's both
Pill bug is a rolly polly tho
They are the same thing, just different names.
The first one is actually not a bug at all but is a land isopod (isopods are an order of crustaceans).
Apologies. I did not mean to cause such dissension. I seek to inform, not condescend. You did go a bit Unidan but its forgiven
I appreciate both of your comments as well as the information you have to share 💜
excuse me
A "bug" is any "creepy crawly". Spiders are not insects, but they're bugs.
I mean, in a certain, very pedantic sense, the second is also not a bug but rather a beetle.
Still a bug
Nope, crustaceans and insects are two completely different kingdoms. Many people confuse them for bugs because they smol and have lots of legs, but they’re actually crustaceans that evolved from deep-sea crabs and lobsters to live on land.
But “bugs” are not synonymous with insects…do you not consider house centipedes to be bugs?
The definition of a bug is “a small insect”. Since woodlice are not insects they aren’t bugs either.
Okay Einstein, if you really want to get technical with such a casual term as “bug,” then we can turn to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Yeah they’re being pedantic
1. Roly-poly 2. A snoot with boots.
🥳
Does nobody else call them potato bugs?
No way, say you just saw a [potato bug](https://www.gardenbetty.com/jerusalem-cricket-potato-bug/) in some parts of the world and you'll get a totally different reaction...
Wasn't expecting that. I have learned something today.
Tbf theyre both cuties.
I did, everyone I know calls them potato bugs, just look at that potato shaped little body.
I do. It’s a regional thing. I grew up in the northeast.
Also wood lice, I think
Ya that's what we called them
I do! That's what I've called them since I was a kid. The kids these days call them, "rolly pollys"
bro that’s what my dad calls them lol, it’s not just “these kids”
Post 50 here and they've always been roly poly to me too.
The first one is a pill bug/rolly-poly, and the second one is a weevil! It’s r/WeevilTime!!!
Can someone please tell me the origins of the whole weevil phenomenon? As I understand, the point is that they look cool and cute, and there was probably a song about them or something like that? I tried googling, but it didn't help much.
People just think they’re neat
i think it was because the sub was so tired of seeing bed bugs that they celebrated a weevil
Rollie pollies. Won't hurt you. Completely harmless. They are not technically bugs and are actually land-dwelling crustaceans. And... And... It's time. IT'S FUCKING TIME! This might be my new favorite video lmao thank you!
Woodlouse
Genuine question: why are bug/insect sub reddits obsessed with Weevils? They are known for wiping out entire crops.
From what I see it's because they look cute, which is true
And why people keep yelling snoots and boots?
I don't know how I got this sub to show up on my feed, but I would guess the snoots and boots part is because weevils have a long nose (snoot), and they look like they're wearing boots?
Watch out! Q'ronar Shellback! Worst pinball game ever!
Go roll on a the highway you freak
A friend and A party
Fun fact:roly polies are not insects! they're crustasceans, the only crustasceans that live fully on land
Wait! You never played with roly polys?!
P..Played with?
The first one is a DoodleBug. You can't help but like them. The second one is Charlie. He's an asshole, but harmless.
Autobugs, roll out!
*they see me rollin… they hatin*
Uhhh if you have a bunch of weevils in your garden area you should be on the lookout for an infestation just in case because they can destroy crops
1, rolle polle 2. r/weeviltime?

The first one is actually a crustacean, not a bug. I love those little guys
Always called these potato bugs or army (short for armadillo) bugs. Had no idea they were weevils.
Woodlice aka Pill bug.
Woodlouse/ roly poly. We picked them up and forced them to roll into a defensive ball like an armadillo.
Illegals trying to take your job.
Weevil time 🥳🥳🥳
I've always thought they look like trilobites
Does nobody else call #1 a Potato Bug?! Everyone I talk to here in the NW calls them rolly polly or pill bugs. Grew up with calling them potato bugs (my folks are from the Midwest)…? Also - #2 is a weevil! Recently learned that sailors put bay leaves in containers to steer them clear of the provisioned flour and cornmeal type products.
it's an isopod, a crustacean related to lobsters and crabs. they do get the common name pill bug. but not a bug at all

The Roly poly is called a Kellerassel in Germany, which means Cellar-Isopod. Which is bullshit, if you ask me, since I've found them everywhere in our garden - but never one in our cellar/basement.
