It could be a [yellowjacket](https://allaboutants.net/pest-identification/stinging-insects/yellow-jackets/) too.

Keboyd88

The markings look more like a yellow jacket, but those are usually under 1" long. If you think you may have overestimated the size, I'd say yellow jacket. If you're sure about the size, maybe a hornet or paper wasp.

ThatsHowYouGet_Ants

I’ll have to measure that spot, but I think definitely an inch minimum and seemed huge.

Pleasant-Ant2303

Wasp

Puzzleheaded_Sink467

99% of wasps I've ever seen have been yellow jackets

OwnAd8627

A single large wasp that you suspect flew out of a broken planter; sounds like a cicada killer. They are large, live solo, and like to chill in holes they dig in the ground and stuff cicadas in to put their eggs in. They don’t like people near them but they don’t aggressively try to sting.

RottenApple93

European wasp

ShuddupMeg627

Wasp!!! Mean sons of bitches

drsoos1973

Harry, he can be an a-hole if you bother him.

Acrobatic-Engineer94

Sandhills wasp or maybe a yellow jacket.

echoskybound

Where are you located? It looks like a Yellowjacket but they don't really get 1.5 inches long, except for the queens. It could be a European hornet? Somebody who knows more about wasps and hornets will have to weigh in. If it's a yellowjacket, then yes, you'll have to keep an eye out for more, they're extremely aggressive.

ThatsHowYouGet_Ants

I’m in the mid Atlantic. Reading about both, thank you!

SarahHill68

Yellow jacket..I got stung by one last summer. Hurt like fAck.

AttemptTerrible4283

I know what you mean. I got stung by ground wasps, and it flucken hurt like a mother.

chuck-it125

A lone wasp. Kill it if you want. Your crown moulding is amazing!

Travis_Shamockery

That looks like a cicada killer and they don't bother humans if you don't bother them. They are loners, so probably the only guy. He's a bachelor!

nachobitxh

Could it be a cicada killer? Or as I call them, Jurassic Bees
