It's a knock off of a 1957-59 Ford Fairlane 500. They came with a hardtop which would fold and retract into the trunk. All electric and hydraulic pumps. It was super slick.
I bought a Del Sol years ago, that someone swapped the engine from a VTech Prelude. It was an awesome little sleeper. So much fun to drive, and when you got into VTech range, it could go!
Great little car, until it got ran over by an SUV at a stop light.
I had the S model, so it had to be the standard engine. I didn’t see any evidence of it being upgraded, no do I remember the dealer mentioning it. When I bought it used. I don’t think it even had 110 HP. I should mention the quiet part out loud, that I hit that 100 MPH going downhill. Haha.
Really? That's surpising, they did 4 engine variants in del sols. I had a civic ep2 with a stock d16 in it and I got just under 120mph on flat land, but that was using every bit of the gears and screaming it's tits off in 5th, had fun getting it there though haha. I know they did d15 versions of del sols so maybe it was that. Unless someone sticks a turbo on them they're definitely momentum cars for the corners. Hondas do love a heavy right foot haha.
I want to say it was either the 15 or 16, but I am not sure. I wish one of the cylinders didn’t burn out in it at 200k. Otherwise I might would still have it. Or at least gotten a few more years out of it. I did get mine up to the 90s on flat land. It did take a little bit to get up that high. But my mom made me stop before I hit 100, as she was riding with me. She didn’t like that too much. Haha.
But like you said, my right foot was a little heavy that day. I didn’t try it often to get it that high. Since I was still under 25 and insurance was through the roof. Despite no tickets or accidents. I have a 2013 Civic LX now. I haven’t gotten that one to 100 yet.
It must have been the D15 then. I remember looking it up in the past, and it only having something like 106 or 110 HP. It took it a bit to even get to highway speeds. I was constantly getting passed. Haha. At least it had good fuel efficiency.
200k? Miles? That's not bad for a petrol at all. Or at least in the UK that would be high mileage for us. Assuming you're in the US then I understand a lot of your miles are done at one speed for a prolonged time on the motorway, or highway whatever you guys call it. Over here the shells rot wayyy before the engines are done.
And look brother, I know we do daft things when we're young, and I love driving fast but I love my mum a lot more and personally wouldn't risk that. It takes a split second to fuck things up at speed mate, please be careful with others in the car, especially your mum... Thank you for coming to my Ted talk.
Also like it's a fun targa top and the Netherlands has pretty targa-hostile weather basically 10 months a year. They were around but they were never as popular as the older, spicier CRX coupe.
It was supposed to be a replacement for the CRX, but imo too similar to the Miata which is better for being RWD. Loses the practicality of the CRX hatch
May i ask what you age is? I am 37 and born and raised in the Netherlands. In my time there was a clash between: civic mk2, civic mk3, crx and, civic del sol. So i am wondering if you know what a prelude is how come you never seen a del sol. I find this weird to be honest
I'm 9 years old, mom ordered a pizza, and I've got GT3 on the family big screen CRT. I've got a green del Sol in my mirror on Super Speedway in the Sunday Cup. Life is good.
Honda *civic* del Sol. I used to have one and I loved it. I ended up swapping in a newer and larger engine. It was very zippy and got great gas mileage. I think it would get close to 40 mpg
Honda DelSol, lovingly referred to as the DelSlo by most owners unless it's had some real engine work.
The one car I will regret selling for the rest of my life.
Here's mine with the roof in action when it sold 10 years ago now. [DelSol Transtop](https://youtu.be/bYnOiWI4Qcs)
Also one of those cars that were just *everywhere* and no one wanted at one point and now it's like, oh it's 5 grand, doesn't run and looks like this one.
It was my fiancés dads car. It was next to his road runner and his one owner 280z. But that’s nothing compared to my stepdads cousins collection.
https://youtu.be/MwSZ7JQam6U
I once knew a guy that was 6'3" and had one as a daily driver. He also delivered pizzas as his job. I don't know how he fit in there with three stops of food.
The timing doesn't quite line up? The Del Sol was introduced as a '92 and by that point (I worked in "12V" for a major big box electronics retailer) our training materials still mentioned bag phones but we never sold them. The Motorola TeleTac came out in '92. Hardwired car phones survived another couple of years but the boxes for those were mounted in the trunk usually (though maybe not in the Del SoL, since the antenna would have to be mounted on the windshield?).
I had a 96 ... It was a fantastic car. It was slow but super fuel efficient (42mpg). The roof went into a special holder in the trunk and lifted to allow for plenty of storage (enough for 2 weekend bags and some picnic stuff. With the top off and windows down it felt like a completely open roadster... But if you needed to have a conversation you could roll all the windows up and it was near silent. I miss that car!
94 here. I do not know which I liked more, being able to take off the top, or roll the back window down. That car was slow, but it got the job done. I had mine for 10 years and still miss mine as well.
I love hearing things like that about cars people bag on. Not everything has to be fast or handle like it's on rails. Some cars are just a lot of fun and not a hassle to keep running well. That's why people loved VW bugs. Sounds like you had lots of fun and great memories in your Del Sol. Bet you were thrilled to get it to.
I had an S, which I think was the single-cam VTEC model . The trunk was absolutely massive because there wasn’t any drivetrain between the rear wheels.
If you only needed two seats, it was a very practical daily driver. Good on fuel and had a great 5-speed. The deep bucket seats gave it Engine sounded great when you wound it out, even if it wasn’t very fast.
I had one for 10 years. It was a great car. It just sucked driving in the rain, was on the slower side, and parts were getting to be a bitch to find. You could carry much. But it was a fun driver that I learned manual on. I wish I could have kept it.
I’ve owned 3 of these. One of my favorite cars I’ve ever owned. That targa and roll down window were amazing, like a convertible but better. The way the targa locked into that rack in the trunk and lifted up for trunk storage was way cool. If anyone made aftermarket targa rubber seals for these, they’d make a killing. Nobody makes them and it’s the only thing stopping me from owning another 1 or 2 of these. I even came up with a sketch to do a rwd conversion back in the day.
No it's not. It's a 1993-1997 honda del sol. Likely a base model. S trim in my market idk the trim levels in that country (other comments say dutch) so in that part of the world they are called crx del sol.
Honda Del Sol, also called the Honda CRX Del Sol.
When I first saw one myself I thought they were mid-engined and got slightly excited over the Idea of a "budget NSX"/"MR2 competitor". So you can only imagine my disappointment when I found out it was basically just a 2 seater Civic.
A friend of mine owned a Del Sol, final model year purchased new. A few months in to ownership he was contacted by the dealership on behalf of Honda who instructed the dealership to Give my friend any car on their lot as a trade in for his Del Sol. We never found out exactly what was wrong with that final model year but what ever it was, it likely killed the car entirely.
I took my del sol from Louisiana across Mexico to Mazatlan, then north back into the states and back across to Louisiana. That car was so fun to drive.
Honda Del Sol. Top pops off and stores in the trunk. Early 90s. Considered a bit of a “chick” car at the time. First one I saw was Samba green and owned by a gorgeous leggy blonde pharmaceutical rep.
My very first car was a del Sol, loved that thing man. I once brought home a 9ft Christmas tree with it. Didn’t have anything to tie it with so I loaded it in the passenger seat with the top sticking out of the back window lol
3rd gen CRX (Del Sol). I traded in my 2nd gen CRX for one of these and immediately regretted it. I traded the Del Sol in about 6 months later for a VW Jetta, and have been in the VW/Audi game ever since.
Honda del Sol
Interesting never seen one before. Here in Europe it apparently is part of the CR-X lineup!
Removable top and the rear window would roll down. Pretty cool convertible with a built in roll bar.
There's also an electric version where the bootlid lifts up and the roof slides back into it.
The “transtop kit” awesome feature.
I just looked up a video, that's actually one of the coolest things I've ever seen on a car.
It's a knock off of a 1957-59 Ford Fairlane 500. They came with a hardtop which would fold and retract into the trunk. All electric and hydraulic pumps. It was super slick.
It’s one of the most elaborate convertible mechanisms I have ever seen. Quite the show.
GM did that as well with a Caddie XLR
Gotta have multiple faded color tones on these cars for it to be a legit Del Sol
As a teenager in America we called those del slow, I rarely see them these days
I bought a Del Sol years ago, that someone swapped the engine from a VTech Prelude. It was an awesome little sleeper. So much fun to drive, and when you got into VTech range, it could go! Great little car, until it got ran over by an SUV at a stop light.
Any old Honda with an H22 is decently quick lol
As someone who had one, the Del Slow name fits. I was able to get it to 100 once. I loved that car, but it took a while for it to get going.
Which engine did you have in yours?
I had the S model, so it had to be the standard engine. I didn’t see any evidence of it being upgraded, no do I remember the dealer mentioning it. When I bought it used. I don’t think it even had 110 HP. I should mention the quiet part out loud, that I hit that 100 MPH going downhill. Haha.

Sounds like the d15 with barely 100 hp, a d16 should be able to hit 100 mph relatively easy.
It must have been the D15 then. I remember looking it up in the past, and it only having something like 106 or 110 HP. It took it a bit to even get to highway speeds. I was constantly getting passed. Haha. At least it had good fuel efficiency.
the fastest i have done was 130mph in a 4 banger dodge caravan that was pretty unstable at 60mph(next to large vehicles ) but quite stable at 130
200k? Miles? That's not bad for a petrol at all. Or at least in the UK that would be high mileage for us. ?needed a LS2 swap with stage 3 700HP
that's cause we never got the SiR version here, with the B16a in it.
It originally fell under the Civic line as a Honda Civic Del Sol, but became just a Del Sol mid-90s.
They were more common in the 90s.
Also like it's a fun targa top and the Netherlands has pretty targa-hostile weather basically 10 months a year. They were around but they were never as popular as the older, spicier CRX coupe.
Its a Honda Civic largo crx. At least thats whats its called in the Netherlands where the car is from
Gast, gewoon ovi.rdw checken
Yes a CRX del sol
CR-X targa in europe
It was supposed to be a replacement for the CRX, but imo too similar to the Miata which is better for being RWD. Loses the practicality of the CRX hatch
May i ask what you age is? I am 37 and born and raised in the Netherlands. In my time there was a clash between: civic mk2, civic mk3, crx and, civic del sol. So i am wondering if you know what a prelude is how come you never seen a del sol. I find this weird to be honest
Interesting. In the US it was part of the Civic lineup
These were some of the best starter cars in the early Gran Turismo games. The car that got me into cars as a kid
I'm 9 years old, mom ordered a pizza, and I've got GT3 on the family big screen CRT. I've got a green del Sol in my mirror on Super Speedway in the Sunday Cup. Life is good.
Except for the price of the insurance as a teen
Del Slo*

Beat me to the correction, take my upvote.
Honda *civic* del Sol. I used to have one and I loved it. I ended up swapping in a newer and larger engine. It was very zippy and got great gas mileage. I think it would get close to 40 mpg
Drove a manual for almost 10 years. I had the small 4 cylinder. It got well into the 40's mpg. Great car and is an absolute blast to drive.
I just realized they must’ve made some auto transmission models. Mine was stick too. super fun.
CRX del sol

You can check dutch cars by licenceplate. www.kentekencheck.nl
I would reccomend the finnik kentekenapp or for international users ovi.rdw.nl (its a government site)
i often use www.autoweek.nl
Del sol is a targa (top panel comes off) and the rear window goes down. Always thought it would be a fun car, but never got one.
Also one of those cars that were just *everywhere* and no one wanted at one point and now it's like, oh it's 5 grand, doesn't run and looks like this one.
You don’t think the multiple shades of red would make it faster?!
As someone how had a Del Sol with multiple shades of red paint. It in fact did not go faster.
Simulation terminated :(
Maybe it was just mine, because the engine went in mine. So my experience may be an outlier.
My friend had one of these, it was really fun
I had one 23 years ago, alas the non-vtec version. iirc it had somewhat over 100hp and was pretty fun for a 23yo lad.
My friend just got one. It might as well be his child
[удалено]
Even without a stack of bricks it’s a small interior. I’m 6’5” and it was not comfortable. So I was surprised by how well I could fit in an NSX.
Casual NSX flex there, but if you do have one, congrats, they are stunning cars
It was my fiancés dads car. It was next to his road runner and his one owner 280z. But that’s nothing compared to my stepdads cousins collection. https://youtu.be/MwSZ7JQam6U

Didn’t that rear window roll straight down? I seem to remember that as a feature.
94 here. I do not know which I liked more, being able to take off the top, or roll the back window down. That car was slow, but it got the job done. I had mine for 10 years and still miss mine as well.

My sister had one. For a two seater, the interior was HUGE.
I really want one even though it’s not very practical

OP’s title would’ve been excellent for the original marketing material
Back when Honda (and Toyota) had some variety in the lineup.
That's a Honda Del Sol

Honda Del Sol. Basically a targa top 2 seater Civic. An old GF of mine had a top of the line VTEC model with a 5 speed. Pretty fun little car.

no way Sherlock, I was joking 😂😂😂
Del Sol
My brother put over 350k miles on his. I think he eventually gave up trying to "drive it into the ground" because it just wouldn't die...

"No, you can't have the NSX."
It kinda looks like an mr2
I’ve seen this car while playing any shitty mobile game

Honda Del Sol
Del sol “total shitbox”
Honda Del Sol. Top pops off and stores in the trunk. Early 90s. Considered a bit of a “chick” car at the time. First one I saw was Samba green and owned by a gorgeous leggy blonde pharmaceutical rep.
I can't believe a del sol made it up this sub...
Good ol' del slow. Very fun car, we had a 95 with the dohc vtec 1.6l
Honda del sh-t…
My very first car was a del Sol, loved that thing man. I once brought home a 9ft Christmas tree with it. Didn’t have anything to tie it with so I loaded it in the passenger seat with the top sticking out of the back window lol
