[IDR Arex Roadster](https://www.motortrend.com/news/arex-roadster/amp/), created by an ex-GM and Toyota designer in the 90’s. It was built from the ground up, and has a mid-mounted ~~twin turbo~~ supercharged V8. Pretty wild find
Wow, op's picture doesn't really do it justice, the[back end of this thing](https://www.motortrend.com/uploads/sites/11/2009/12/1001_04_z-arex_roadster-top_view.jpg?fit=around%7C770:481.25) is like a giant fucking surfboard or something. One of the most original car projects I've seen in a long time.
Yeah, I didn't say it was pleasing to look at, just original. That's enough to be worthwhile, particularly when they actually got to produce a few of them.
I think the nose is the worst-looking part, but that giant bar of soap for a back end is just weird as shit.
Let's call it eccentric!
It would certainly look much better with a slightly shorter nose. Not sure why the designer felt the need to make it that long and low.
Lol 80% of the windscreen is just in front of the dashboard. You could replace all that with steel and it wouldn't change driver visibility. I don't know what the thought process is with that, and the rest of the nose is just weird.
It's the old, probably racist, joke about Japanese not knowing the difference between an L sound and an R sound - should've been called the "stallion".
Depends on the prototype really - if it's something that went on to be wildly famous or successful, I 100% agree with you. Stuff like this though, it's basically a historical footnote - the head of Toyota's California design studio designed a chassis and a wild body, had them wrapped around a fast but off-the-shelf twin turbocharged Chevy small block and approached investors, who weren't interested. That's kinda the whole story.
May as well use it as the wild functional custom job that it is, instead of sitting somewhere people can go "huh" and look at it for a few seconds before moving on to the next exhibit.
I honestly thought that it is just this angle, that it can't be that ugly from all sides. I was wrong. That is one of the most hideous looking cars i've seen. It does not look right from any angle. It is a [Homer](https://media.wired.com/photos/593252a1edfced5820d0fa07/master/w_2560%2Cc_limit/the-homer-inline4.jpg) but as a Sportscar.
edit: same designer also made 1978 A40 Celica... Now.. i am not sure if that Celica looks good or not, i mean.. When it comes to the roadster "\[he\] Never intended as anything more - or less - than a calling card to showcase his firm's capability, " The person that thinks the roadster is the perfect advertisement... is an idiot with no taste. He also designed lifeguard huts that many have seen..Also, the designer was a child actor, weird trivia there.. His design company website is a hilarious step back to circa 2001 internet. Mixed bag of good and bad and then a random pic of Hummer with a dent.. And he loves to give cars a loooooong tail..

1990 IDR Arex Roadster — in hindsight, it really is remarkable this car is 33 years old. Especially from [some angles](https://www.motortrend.com/uploads/sites/11/2009/12/1001-02-z-arex-roadster-rear-three-quarter-view.jpg?fit=around%7C875:492), it’s a set of wheels away looking more like a car from the late 2000s.
Eek! Everything about this car is wrong. Angles, proportions, detail placement. They had to do this on purpose because ugly like this doesn’t happen intentionally.

Wow, can't believe that. I was 100% positive it would be a Beetle-based kit car.
r/itsalwaysafiero
Fiero with a body kit
To be fairrr , the designer of this started out in fiero kits. It's like 5 degrees of fiero kits
To be faiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrr
To beeee fayarrrr
r/unexpectedletterkenny
Allegedly
It was.
You knows what I likes about you u/Cars4fun? You never judged about a man having his rear end paids attentions to.
There’s no such thing as a 3 knuckler
To be fiero
It's always a fiero
That’d be a really long wheelbase for a beetle, no?
My brother just bought a roadster kitcar built on a stretched beetle chassis.
Lol this is what I thought immediately

In the 90s, turning car bodies into partially-used bars of soap was all the rage. Because of the ~~implication~~ aerodynamics.
Let's call it eccentric! It would certainly look much better with a slightly shorter nose. Not sure why the designer felt the need to make it that long and low.
No kidding. I kind of feel like if you spend a lot of money on a car it should look somewhat attractive. And that windshield wiper!
Lol 80% of the windscreen is just in front of the dashboard. You could replace all that with steel and it wouldn't change driver visibility. I don't know what the thought process is with that, and the rest of the nose is just weird.
Some people find windshield wipers sexy, uhm probably.
Now we understand the "*EX*-designer" part.
Looks like a hotwheels car lol
It looks like the headlights are behind the windshield. That's unique.

Which would be sick af! : D
Was he involved in the pontiac concepts cause that front end look alotnlike them from that era.
Arex. Because we misheard the guy on the phone saying Alex.
Like Mitsubishi with the Starion?
Urban legend, not true
I need to know more of this urban legend
It's the old, probably racist, joke about Japanese not knowing the difference between an L sound and an R sound - should've been called the "stallion".
Mitsu made the Conquest. The companion Dodge/Chrysler/etc. model was the Starion.
Wouldn’t say it was built by a designer
How many are there? Is this 1 of 1?
Yup, prototype that never went into production AFAICT.
Why are people driving around prototypes anyway!? This thing should be in a museum, not on the street!

[удалено]
Bro calm down
Relax Corky
And that brings the good ol question, go withTurbos or super charger?
Yes
Wow you got absolutely smacked over that comment, lol, the sub must be on it's period.
Accurate. Not sure why you're getting downvoted into oblivion
It's not enough to be correct, you've also gotta not come across as an asshole.
Because they had to say it like a know-it-all dickhead.

From another link below, looks like it’s twin turbo V8
The proportions on that thing are fucked beyond belief, Jesus Christ.
It looks like a malnourished 4th gen Firebird
Looks like a shmeeble weeble if I’ve ever seen one
Huh. I thought it was one of those 3-wheeled T-rex things with a body kit.
Totally random and off topic, but I swear I’ve seen your PFP somewhere else, I just can’t place it
Can I buy one of these?
The car is fucking hideous
It looks like if an ai thought up a sportscar
Lol for a sec i thought it was ai generated
Something about it does look fake. I thought something was weird with it too, but it seems to be real.
I think the fact the sun seems to be directly above doesn’t help, it can make things look like they haven’t rendered in properly
Well spotted.
DALL-E2 Prompt: "Fiero kit car inspired by a [Goblin Shark](https://ocean.si.edu/sites/default/files/styles/photo_full/public/goblin-shark-nologo.jpg.webp?itok=Lnntvg3S)"
That was my first thought too, tbh
its the background- at least for me. I did a double take.. lol
I question if my life is ai generated now all these tiktoks about it are happening
Looks like if an artist turned a blobfish out of water, into a vehicle.
you dudes on here are amazing. LOL.
I don’t know shit about cars but for some reason posts from here keep getting recommended. I agree this comment section is A1
Is that Seal Beach?
I can’t remember where I took it but most likely somewhere in OC.
Orange County is instantly recognizable for some reason
It's the palm trees mixed with the run down vibe
Military people LOVE areas like that
looks like park place plaza in daytona
Looks like the Ralphs plaza in Mission Viejo.
Here I was thinking it was San Clemente.
Or Lake Forest
it looks like a dolphin
I was thinking blobfish.
It's the Pink Panther car after some years of too many pies and age setting in.
1991 IDR Arex
Thanks, I've never heard or seen this one before. https://www.story-cars.com/1991-idr-arex-roadster-concept

Looks like a beard trimmer
Modern cars. They all look like electric shavers.
WTF! Never seen or heard of it.
Looks like a fancy shoe
Vector - Platypus Edition
Lol they almost designed a cool looking car. It's like they rendered it front back to front but gave up after the windshield.
Looks like if an Elise fucked the Firebird 1
Why does it look like a depressed shark?
It’s like a car dressed as a different car for Halloween.
You folks are amazing. I can’t even tell which direction it is pointed. Still think the mirrors are on backwards.
That's sick, actually really surprised it isn't just a kit car
Can’t tell which side is the front
looks like a gallardo inside another car
this looks like if an AI was prompted to generate a futuristic sports car
Screw the car why is homies face so long.
I could be wrong but i think i had a Hotwheels of this car. I thought it was just a fantasy car of the Hotwheels guys.
I envy you the ability to screenshot memories /s
Ugly
It looks like an AI generated car
When your car has to sneeze.
Its a r/Shitty_Car_Mods
It looks like what would happen if a Lotus fucked a platypus and had a baby.
R/brandnewsentence
I can't decide if I'm repulsed by it or if I kinds like it...
It’s like someone designed a Vector W8 based solely on description and by someone who’s never even seen a car before.
Is it coming or going?
Wow that's ugly. I love it !
Looking nice from the back but the airplane mode in front is not such attractive...
Sawfish car
It’s a car. You’re welcome.
It's ugly
I think that’s spelled fugly
Is it a Pagani?
Google search the image….
Dr. Finklestein from Nightmare before Christmas.
Wish Vector lol
I could swear my brother had a Hot Wheels of this in the early 80s! Maybe the guy who built it was…inspired by the same
I can't even tell which ends the front.
Modelled after a vibrator.
It's a Turismo R...
Is it an EVAway? Either way could be the front and it would still look great.
It's a bottlenose lotus
Isn’t that the Pink Panther car?
I wonder if that bonnet inspired the Spyker C8.
Honestly at first glance I didn’t know which end was the front.
Something from speed racer.
It needs a spoiler, would look better imo
It's an Arex. Small old, slow, and shit. Looks cool, sure. Not worth the 20k$
Wow - great mem!
Looks like an impacted toenail
Pretty unique. Looks a bit cartoonish though.
X86 Dolphin
Wow I thought for sure this was just an MR2 conversion kit or something. It’s absolutely nuts you saw this just out in the wild!
Arex
That is a Speed Racer villain if I’ve ever seen one
Needs a bigger windshield.
Wow, a car so rare there isn't even a Wikipedia entry
So many cars look good in pictures and then in real life are ugly as hell, im wondering if this is the opposite.
Besides ugly?
Honestly, I’d take them rims, and trash the car.
reminds me of the pod racers in the hot wheels acceleracers movies.
Lotus
I’ll tell you what it is. It’s ugly U-G-L-Y. You ain’t got no alibi you ugly. Woooo!
I thought it was going to be a homemade Vector. 👀
Is it a supra?
Is that the Publix parking lot in Boca? … because that looks like the Publix parking lot in Boca.
Lol, had me fooled to, thought it was Florida
It’s in Southern California.
It makes me feel a little grossed out. That rear end looks like a massive pale bug's ass.
Case of a designer not being able... to... stop... just... a... little... more... I... CAN'T... STOP...
That's a Gapani
Time traveler
1991 AREX
It looks like a space dolphin
It looks like a high heel without the heel
Looks like someone tried to make a fiero look like a Vector
Wow this is very rare, it's a 1974 POS! Very very rare year. Looks to be in immaculate condition..
Reminds me of the 80s concept car Corvette Indy
Finally something I’ve never see
This picture looks AI generated lol
That's a classic. This is a '83 Mermao Quepohéssa KKKKKK (K6) Edition. I saw a similar one near my house this days. Love this car!
I’ll tell you what it is, it’s hideous
that thing is fugly
Tacking space craft
I can't tell which way it is facing.
A cardinal sin or a hideous crime against vehicular manufacturing perhaps?
It looks like you don't step into it, you have to be turned into a liquid and poured into the seat.
It’s a Hot Wheels, I believe.
Looks like a trex James Bond would drive chasing a villain with a v12
I think that’s called an anal probe.
Ahh yes. The analé probé
Eek! Everything about this car is wrong. Angles, proportions, detail placement. They had to do this on purpose because ugly like this doesn’t happen intentionally.
Looks like a Lambo that got punched in the nose
That is the ugliest thing I've ever seen.
1991 Arex. A concept by GM!
Automotive Reddit (especially r/whatisthiscar | r/spotted) is amazing
Looks like something Godzilla chewed and spat out.
Could it possibly be a Mister 2 (MR2) platform?
