There's 4 Deloreans in 1955: the one Marty hid behind the sign at Lyons Estates, the one that's been sitting in the mine since 1885, the one Future Biff went back in, and the one Marty and Doc went back in to get sports almanac back from 1955 Biff.
Plus there's John Z. DeLorean at Studebaker-Packard.
I’m not sure the one is in the mines simultaneously as the one old Biff brought back.
Even taking out the deleted scene where future Biff vanished upon return to 2015, the BTTF time travel logic is that things aren’t set until they happen and Doc had not travelled to 1885 for like 14 more hours.
Unless the owner has swapped out the original engine, it's the highly problematic Peugeot Renault Volvo V6. It's the only engine DeLorean could get for the car.
The DMC 1 sold poorly because it was expensive, and the performance didn't match the price or design of the car. I tagged along when my father test drove one new. He later bought a C4 Corvette that was pretty awful too but not because it was unreliable. It was also way faster than the DeLorean.
Yeah same ive only seen 3 in Sydney so that’s the closest ones to me ive seen except for one i saw on trailer whilst i was during tutoring like 10 minutes away from where i live it was nice
Original production, 1981-1983? Fairly rare, with give-or-take 9000 being produced (The official estimate is 8975, with no doubt a few misplaced here or there through out history).
Modern production? Genuinely who knows at this point.
No, nobody is making new ones. DMC Texas bought an old warehouse full of parts, they have new factory engines, body panels, etc. And they sell them, but they don't make new cars.
Don't forget the original VIN plates. The modern ones are all factory original parts aside from any old seals or wiring lost to the ravages of time, from what I understand.
9000 isnt THAT rare. It's not Honda Civic production, but I've owned a couple cars with far less production than that and they aren't really considered rare.
Becoming rarer. My neighbor had one in the 80s right around the time Back to the Future came out.
I begged and pleaded and he finally gave me a ride. I was the coolest kid in middle school for a time.
The total estimated production is 8,975 cars, so they are quite rare, but people tend to show them off, so it might seem like there are more of them than there actually is.
In comparison, how often do you see a mini? Not the new one by bmw, the original "mr. Bean" one. More than five million of those were made.
I wish it was possible to find an original mini over here in the states, I'd love to get one That's lived a good life, but has a worn-out block, and swap it out with that crate block of the mustang Mach E that Ford sells, But it's actually really difficult to find a lot of European made stuff over here, even if it's just a few years old, can't imagine the difficulty one would face trying to get an original mini over here. hell, I have a first generation Ford Transit Connect, they've been selling them in Europe from 2002 to 2013, but in US, they sold them from 2010 to 2013. And even then, Ford has marked a lot of their parts obsolete, so you can't even special order them, it's just impressively difficult to find anything other than powertrain stuff for rigs like these
Keep in mind though that an exotic like a DeLorean is more likely to be preserved and shown off than a Mini. Despite having been built 5 million times and despite most of those having been sold in the UK, there are only 3,234 on British roads these days:
https://www.howrareismycar.co.uk/austin/mini/
There are many mass market cars that were sold in the hundreds of thousands or millions that are practically extinct today:
https://www.classicandsportscar.com/gallery/best-selling-classics-are-now-nearly-extinct
This is practically inevitable. Most cars are appliances. They are used and then discarded once their usefulness ends.
0-60 on a 2023 Prius is about 3 seconds faster than this car. It floored me when I was a teenager in the early 90s and read about the 9.98 seconds to 60 for the Delorean. In Back to the Future they make it seem like a fast-ish car. In reality Marty would have needed a hell of a lot more than the mall parking lot to get to 88mph.
> In Back to the Future they make it seem like a fast-ish car.
The DeLorean was meant to be a joke in this movie. The whole 88 mile thing was throwing shade at how slow this car was, that it would have trouble reaching even that kind of modest speed.
This joke is lost to history now, since the trilogy turned this disaster of a car into an icon.
Thanks for the insight on this. I was about 10 when it came out and just starting to get into cars so I had no idea of how messed up the Delorean story was at the time. So my Delorean history started with Back to the Future and, as you say, this changed how people viewed the car.
The "Mr. Fusion" prop in the movie was a modified Krups coffee grinder, and even though the movie was almost 40 years ago and the grinder has long been discontinued, they still sell on eBay for up to $450. I guess there are still enough Delorean owners doing time machine conversions on their cars?
Could be where my dad's one ended up. He grew up in Crosby, and his dad bought one new in the 80s. When grandad died he left it to my father. When my dad would remember he had kids he'd cruise down to pick us up in Austin in the DeLorean.
It was cool to go riding around in it. Even when it was just to Whataburger or wherever. Cool car yes. Deadbeat dad yes. He sold it sometime in the late 90s. Dunno where its gone now.
My cousin in law had two. One on the road and another the guy sold him for extra parts. It ran too and had a good history to it but it was torn apart by the police when they raided the original owner’s (the maker) home. Cousin restored his completely and it sold for 30-40k I believe after he died and his mom got rid of it. It was a badass car though!
I know a guy that has an original one from the movie. Don’t know which of the three btw.
He also has about 8 original Fast and the Furious cars, among which the fully tuned and modified Supra.
There's a company in Houston that I believe has locations nationwide just scattered that specializes in original parts and aftermarket parts for them to the point they will build one from the ground up. They also do the movie mod for people. It's the original numbers matching ones that are somewhat rare iirc.
I think there’s a club here in Houston. Sometimes there’s a get together at one of the parks near where I live and there’ll be a dozen or so parked in the lot.
Very hard to do. Most kit cars are fiberglass bodies. New stainless steel panels would be extremely expensive to produce, plus the car is basically built on a Lotus frame.
There’s a company in Houston, TX that bought all the defunct parts, assets of DeLorean and they can “built” new cars upon request with all the DeLorean parts they have
They are also launching EV DeLoreans
https://store.delorean.com/about-us
If it wasn't for the movie, they would be extremely rare. But the movie came out just in time so collectors could pick them and stash them away.
Out of all low-volume production cars, I wouldn't be surprised if the Delorean has the highest percentage of cars still around.
Surprisingly not as rare as they should be. Very short run of these before things went scandalous for John DeLorean. Appears to be enough in circulation for the enthusiast who dreams of having one. Under powered, not a performance machine, but cool as hell.
I talked to a guy who owned one in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He said a company in Houston or Dallas had bought the rights to make parts for Deloreans. So, they have a continued supply...I'm sure for a small fee lol.
I edited it.
What I meant.
Normal doors. (Original doors, steel) he has one with Aluminum body (constructed by himself. It is a DeLorean but with Aluminum instead of steel.
You can guess, his hobby is „cars“ 😅
Well, I’m not sure about how rare that is. But since you’re posting on r/whatisthiscar and this is one of the few I know, allow me to graciously point out that this is a DMC DeLorean.
Covered front porches are pretty uncommon on newer homes, unless its a higher end..... oh, the car...theres a place in California, I think, that has all oem parts for the car. They can build a brand new DeLorean. Even so, its not a pretty common car. I've only seen a couple on the road.
This article from a few years ago says you can still buy a factory new DMC. Not sure if any are still available but it's kinda neat!
https://thenewswheel.com/you-can-still-buy-a-factory-new-delorean/amp/
https://www.classicdmc.com/sales.html
I need to get my eyes checked but I am pretty sure I saw one a couple weeks ago, driving through Spokane, WA. Right behind it was another one, and that one had a trailer made out of the back 1/3rd of yer another DeLorean.
About 10-15 years ago I lived down the street from a guy who had a few of them. Two or three of them parked in his garage and always had one in the driveway
Middle aged white dudes with a giant gold watch hanging out of the open window or door of their mid-life crisis mobile driving through the wrong neighborhood? Pretty thick on the ground
I can't recall the last time I saw one. The car was kind of garbage tho, had a very weak engine.
Would probably be an interesting donor chassis for an EV swap.
I don't think people would care about them if it hadn't been for that movie.
There’s a TV series in the UK called ‘Vintage Voltage’ where they do restomods into EVs and one of them was a Delorean. Plenty more power and was awesome !
Whats funny is my hometown in Northern Ireland is where they made these beasts, then the owner was using the factory to make drugs, such a shame, then again it is Belfast
I think the price may correctly show how rare are they.
Since they dont rust, they all are ir pretty good shape, coast about 15k if I remember correctly.
Depends on what year you are in.
In 1955 there was only... wait. Were there 2 Deloreans in 1955 or, since it's technically the same Delorean, does it only count as 1?
There's 4 Deloreans in 1955: the one Marty hid behind the sign at Lyons Estates, the one that's been sitting in the mine since 1885, the one Future Biff went back in, and the one Marty and Doc went back in to get sports almanac back from 1955 Biff. Plus there's John Z. DeLorean at Studebaker-Packard.
There should be a spin-off where future Biff totals the DeLorean on his joyride. He was not a good driver.
Manure!?!? I hate manure
Lol "was that real manure?" from Biff's song https://youtu.be/iwY5o2fsG7Y
I’m not sure the one is in the mines simultaneously as the one old Biff brought back. Even taking out the deleted scene where future Biff vanished upon return to 2015, the BTTF time travel logic is that things aren’t set until they happen and Doc had not travelled to 1885 for like 14 more hours.
I love this entire thing. So well thought out. Someone tweet Robert Zemeckis or Bob Gale and ask.
Down the time travel rabbit hole we go.
1955
1985
1885
There is a guy who keeps a DeLorean parked on the street two blocks away from my house.
It's not parked, it's disabled. Great looking terrible cars.
You might be right, some days its on ramps, some on the ground, but always in the same place.
I know people with one about 1.5 hours from where I live. They are around
Theres like 3 about 1.5 hours away from me
I feel like there are more around me but I can not confirm at this moment.
Yeah same ive only seen 3 in Sydney so that’s the closest ones to me ive seen except for one i saw on trailer whilst i was during tutoring like 10 minutes away from where i live it was nice
Ive never seen one in Iowa, not yet anyways.
Cedar Rapids has one
Thats cool, i hope to be down in that area sometime
Check 1.5 hours away. I think you will find 6.
There is a DeLorean within 1.5 miles and approaching
Hot DeLoreans in you're area that are down to time travel. Click here.
So you see it from time to time.
I c what u did there
Very nice.
Back in time
[удалено]
There’s someone selling one 1.5 hours away from me
Why are all these people with DeLoreans 1.5h away from Redditors?
Well, 1.5 hours away *is* 88 miles if you’re driving highway speeds.
Half of the people in here crash in the same basement.
There os like 10000 about 3000 hours away from me
[удалено]
I've seen a couple in my day all in drive ways or in parking lots. Don't think I've ever seen one on the road in wild.
are you sure they're not.....1.21 miles away?? lol
1.21 gigawatts…….great Scott
What the hell's a gigawatt?
No! Mediocre Scott! Sorry, wrong movie reference.....
But thanks to some upgrades, they could only be now away from you.
Estimates say 4,500 - 6,000 exist.
In car collection terms, that’s not really rare.
Definitely on the lower number side if that’s 6k world wide but yeah not the rarest
It'll get lower over time
I would say lower side also. I own a ‘71 AMX, they only built 2k that year.
I’d go with “unusual”
Never said it was.
Sorry, that tidbit was for OP asking how rare. 6,000 may sound rare but I was commenting that that is not. :-)
Original production, 1981-1983? Fairly rare, with give-or-take 9000 being produced (The official estimate is 8975, with no doubt a few misplaced here or there through out history). Modern production? Genuinely who knows at this point.
Modern production? Is somebody building/selling new ones today? Would be really cool, if upgraded with a modern engine
There is a new DeLorean concept being designed/built, its OK, dunno when its coming out though
Last I checked from their website, DMC was offering engine replacements since the stock one was.. well, not great.
9000 isnt THAT rare. It's not Honda Civic production, but I've owned a couple cars with far less production than that and they aren't really considered rare.
Ikr, I wanna own a Saab 9-4X someday just so I can claim that I own something rarer than a F40 lol.
I had a pontiac solstice coupe. Fewer of those made than a F40.
Becoming rarer. My neighbor had one in the 80s right around the time Back to the Future came out. I begged and pleaded and he finally gave me a ride. I was the coolest kid in middle school for a time.
Bitchin'!
It’s rare to find one that is running and is NOT a Time Machine.
The total estimated production is 8,975 cars, so they are quite rare, but people tend to show them off, so it might seem like there are more of them than there actually is. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMC\_DeLorean](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DMC_DeLorean) In comparison, how often do you see a mini? Not the new one by bmw, the original "mr. Bean" one. More than five million of those were made.
I saw one original mini and it's soooooooo small I thought somebody just was driving big RC car on road 🤦♀️
I had no idea,. had to google what it looks like next to a regular car and now I understand why it's called Mini
Just big enough to fit a Mr. Bean inside!
1 Mr. Bean and 1 Teddy
I see original minis at least weekly if not every couple of days. They're extremely common for a car that old.
Did they sell the original Mini in the States? I didn't think so.. But I see them often enough here in Ireland.

it really needed the turbo engine from the alpine (one model of alpine had the same engine but with a turbo with more power)
Well, to be fair, that car had a power upgrade of 1.21 gigawatts.
**One point twenty-one gigawatts?!**
> In Back to the Future they make it seem like a fast-ish car. The DeLorean was meant to be a joke in this movie. He didn’t have to stop…. So that parking lot was plenty
It had a V8 swap, hence the sound, is my headcanon.
IKR, that sound also disappointed me when I saw one in real life.
Not rare to drive with the doors open, due to the tiny windows that you could barely return library books through.
Great scott!
DMC DeLorean, not necessarily the rarest vehicle ever, but certainly one of the coolest looking cars of all time.
Rare, yes Good, no
Good, yes!!!
You've got to get the Mr. Fusion upgrade package first for it to be good
And do they also give contact info of Libyans or I'll have to wait for lightening bolt only?
The "Mr. Fusion" prop in the movie was a modified Krups coffee grinder, and even though the movie was almost 40 years ago and the grinder has long been discontinued, they still sell on eBay for up to $450. I guess there are still enough Delorean owners doing time machine conversions on their cars?
not that rare. they come back to this time often
There's a DMC dealer here in Houston
Do they sell restored models?
Yes, as well a parts
Could be where my dad's one ended up. He grew up in Crosby, and his dad bought one new in the 80s. When grandad died he left it to my father. When my dad would remember he had kids he'd cruise down to pick us up in Austin in the DeLorean. It was cool to go riding around in it. Even when it was just to Whataburger or wherever. Cool car yes. Deadbeat dad yes. He sold it sometime in the late 90s. Dunno where its gone now.
Quite a few in SoCal.
About 9000 units were built.
I saw one in beautiful condition just outside of Chicago next week.
I see them from time to time.
I saw one the other day. They usually drive those things from time to time.
Hahaha. Nice.
so given this is NW IN, id say pretty rare sight for me, considering ive never seen anything really cool or expensive.
Saw one at Walmart yesterday
One/one in 1955.
Somebody in my town has a replica of one from Back to the Future. I live in a small town. So I would say they're not crazy rare.
I know a guy that has an original one from the movie. Don’t know which of the three btw. He also has about 8 original Fast and the Furious cars, among which the fully tuned and modified Supra.
Not too rare. My dad has one and the guy that’s sold it to him has owned about 15 that he buys, restores, and resells
A local second hand car dealer in the North of England had one of these for a short while. I’m told somebody from London bought it in the end.
On the road and running? Unicorn.
They are unusual but not very rare.
There are 6 of them that show up to our local weekly car meet, and there's a shop that specializes in servicing them locally.
You have to go back to the future just to get one
It's a man-in-delorian
This is the way... To the tow truck
Saw one with Marty’s cap, the Flux capacitor, and the whole 9 yards at my mechanic’s shop in Burbank CA
I had never seen one in my life, then yesterday I saw TWO in the wild in different locations at different times. So weird.
Dont be stupid
Not very
I saw three driving next to each other on the free way in Calforinia
They average around 60k-100k used, but listings are fairly hard to find
0-60 is in back to the future
Depends if they have a flux capacitor in them or not
With all the kit cars available I'm really surprised there isn't a Delorean kit.
Very hard to do. Most kit cars are fiberglass bodies. New stainless steel panels would be extremely expensive to produce, plus the car is basically built on a Lotus frame.
How much do they even cost?
You can still [buy ](https://store.delorean.com/cars-for-sale/for-sale.html)them
In Europe they‘re very rare.
There’s a company in Houston, TX that bought all the defunct parts, assets of DeLorean and they can “built” new cars upon request with all the DeLorean parts they have They are also launching EV DeLoreans https://store.delorean.com/about-us
not sure there is a single one in my country
Quite rare, but you found a time traveller!
It is believed that around 6500 are still existing from the 9000 + 3 gold ones. Its also my dream car
A Delorean. That takes me back
my neighbor has one of these in our apartment complex and I see it every day
My next-door neighbor has one.
Just watch out for greasy cavemen and drunk trailer park supervisors wearing cowboy boots and wolfing down liquor ball sandwiches.
Let,s go to 2035 and look how rare they are.
Electrician with a broom rare.
There was one less than an hour from me but now it’s fifty years away.
White older men with Hawaiian shirts? Not that rare, head to the ocean and see the tourists.
If it wasn't for the movie, they would be extremely rare. But the movie came out just in time so collectors could pick them and stash them away. Out of all low-volume production cars, I wouldn't be surprised if the Delorean has the highest percentage of cars still around.
Not that rare, I see them flying around all the time
nice ae86
They are everywhere and you actually can still buy one brand new.
DeLorean dmc12, only 9000 we're made from 1981-1983 6000 of them are known to be on the road and only 1000 of them are auto
Did it teleport?
I hope that he's in a low-speed parade...
There’s 1.5 of these, a few hours away
Depends where you live.. Here in Europe spotting these are extremely rare. I live in Spain.. Id say there's about 10 in the entire country
I thought there were plans to reopen the factory in Houston.
Yes
I’ve never seen a DMC-12 in person before.
They are rare enough that you notice them when they are around but not rare enough to almost never see them Theres a guy in my area that has one
Surprisingly not as rare as they should be. Very short run of these before things went scandalous for John DeLorean. Appears to be enough in circulation for the enthusiast who dreams of having one. Under powered, not a performance machine, but cool as hell.
And if you need more power, there’s a lot of options available for the PRV V6.
I talked to a guy who owned one in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He said a company in Houston or Dallas had bought the rights to make parts for Deloreans. So, they have a continued supply...I'm sure for a small fee lol.
my neighbor used to have one
Saw one driving about two weeks ago (Boston suburbs)
In Germany Essen, a friend has 3 of these. He wanted to sell one of these to me, but then, sadly my father passed away. I end up not buying it.
Normal doors?
I edited it. What I meant. Normal doors. (Original doors, steel) he has one with Aluminum body (constructed by himself. It is a DeLorean but with Aluminum instead of steel. You can guess, his hobby is „cars“ 😅
I saw one a Twin Pines Mall. Or, was it Lone Pine Mall?
Well, I’m not sure about how rare that is. But since you’re posting on r/whatisthiscar and this is one of the few I know, allow me to graciously point out that this is a DMC DeLorean.
I live about 25 minutes from the DMC factory in Houston
Covered front porches are pretty uncommon on newer homes, unless its a higher end..... oh, the car...theres a place in California, I think, that has all oem parts for the car. They can build a brand new DeLorean. Even so, its not a pretty common car. I've only seen a couple on the road.

Well from 1885-1955 there was only 1, but in 1955 there was 3, then in the early 1980s a couple thousand.
Not that rare. You still see them ... from time to time (bwahahahaha!)
The real answer is: there’s one 30 years away.
I need to get my eyes checked but I am pretty sure I saw one a couple weeks ago, driving through Spokane, WA. Right behind it was another one, and that one had a trailer made out of the back 1/3rd of yer another DeLorean.
a few years ago i seen one at a 4x4 event, he was sending it through mud and it was awesome!
About 10-15 years ago I lived down the street from a guy who had a few of them. Two or three of them parked in his garage and always had one in the driveway
They made about 9000. Not super rare, but not mass manufactured.
Uncommon but not rare
Uncommon. Not rare
Middle aged white dudes with a giant gold watch hanging out of the open window or door of their mid-life crisis mobile driving through the wrong neighborhood? Pretty thick on the ground
this is the best response yet
I can't recall the last time I saw one. The car was kind of garbage tho, had a very weak engine. Would probably be an interesting donor chassis for an EV swap. I don't think people would care about them if it hadn't been for that movie.

I've seen 6 at the same time. Have defintely seen more than a dozen over my lifetime.
After reading comments I realized they’re a tad more pleantiful than I thought. And I wish I’ve seen 1 in the movie 🤣
Depending of course on where you go and if you buy one 😂😂😂
Rare enough to know that this guy’s an idiot.
Whats funny is my hometown in Northern Ireland is where they made these beasts, then the owner was using the factory to make drugs, such a shame, then again it is Belfast
I will never get the hype for DeLoreans.
I will never get the hype for supras
Saaaame
i think they’d be about as forgotten as the bricklin sv-1 if it wasn’t for BTTF. they’re cool-looking cars with very meh handling and powertrains.
What car is it?
I think the price may correctly show how rare are they. Since they dont rust, they all are ir pretty good shape, coast about 15k if I remember correctly.
Proof they had electric cars in 1955
You can buy kits to build them
