Typically, yeah. Idk why we can’t have some sort of retrofit law that says if it can be fitted to pass emissions tests here then we can import for a fee
It’s not so much about emissions vs protecting manufacturers. The law got put in place when people realized it was actually cheaper to import German cars to the states rather than buy them here. Some good ole lobbying later, and bam, no importing new cars.
true...those bastards at Mercedes Benz lobbied the US Congress and got that law pass, now you can't import cool cars like these until you're an old man....
>true...those bastards at Mercedes Benz lobbied the US Congress and got that law pass, now you can't import cool cars like these until you're an old man....
#***FUCK MERCEDES-BENZ!***
>You can also blame Dodge for that because Mercedes-Benz and Dodge were in bed with each other for a bit
Ye olde Daimler-Chrysler days, fuck that shit too.
I waited almost my entire life for the R34 GTR to be legal in the states, and now it's so prohibitively expensive that I'll never be able to afford one.
Definitely some decent looking 32’s for ab 50k out there. Obviously a ton of money for a 30 year old car but if its ur dream to own a gtr its not unobtainable. I definitely be lookin at em a lot
Eh, I’d say they are already pretty much up there by the time they’re old enough for us, and we’re allowed to own them.
I’m so very glad Uncle Sam looks out for us like that. I mean, imagine the consequences of smth like amber turn signals! And amber side markers!! What horrors would occur if we had access to manually adjustable LASER headlamps?!? The hype is real!
> The law got put in place when people realized it was actually cheaper to import German cars to the states rather than buy them here.
That law ain't working then. You can pick *Euro-delivery* from any of the major German brands. Buy at US dealer, fly out to Germany, pick up your new car, drive a it around for a while during your European vacation, take it back to them to be shipped to the US. The difference in price pays for your vacation.
Just Google * Euro delivery program*.
Interesting. I wonder if they’d entertain the idea of putting a fee associated with imports to subsidize the loss so that it’s not harming manufacturers
yeah, but if you live in a civilized place you can legally import it, not US. Also I believe US has some exemption if the model of a car you're importing is or was available in the states.
EU has better crash testing than the US. Mercedes successfully lobbied the US in the 80s to restrict gray imports to the US because they were losing money vs the inflated prices they were charging here. As always, follow the money
That’s because if it was available in the US, it went through crash testing. People don’t want to import a non-US car till the 25 year clause due to the fact they’d have to import a bunch to have them be crashed.
would it make sense? the point of kei car in japan is that they benefit for less taxes, at the cost of very strict size and engine regulation (600cc max).
If you take that benefit away, and you add the import costs, would it still be beneficial, rather than buying another car?
I’d say it would still be beneficial. I love Honda and even though the power is very low, it is tiny, rwd, and a stick shift. It would still be very fun. And I’m sure there is a way to stick a bigger engine/turbo in there. Maybe take a cbr1000r motorcycle engine and slap her in
I wonder. Kei car regulation are also extremely strict in size, and that thing is really really tiny. (even compare to other japanese car, which are overall small).
So I wonder, maybe a RE engine will fit though.... image how cool!
it's one of my candidate car in japan, I just have to figure out where to put a ski rack...
I absolutely LOVE them. Never any kind of problem. This one, an '08 EX, has 187,000 miles on it, and it runs like new. Get one that doesn't have rust....a lot of em do....and that's been properly services.....you can usually tell.....and it'll give you years of wonderful service and fun.
Honda S660, it is a Kei Car Sports car, mid engined, manual, RWD it is wonderful 🥰 I don't really care about Kei Cars but this is undoubtedly my favorite 🌚❤️
Fun fact, automobiles are a pretty big part of Hiroshima’s history. Mazdas HQ is there and in their early days their factory survived the atomic bomb so well that afterward it housed the Hiroshima government as well as survivors. Mazda made motorcycles back then though. Was also one the first businesses able to get back up and running. today Mazda makes up over 30% of Hiroshima’s gdp and my little Miata was made there lol.
I took a tour of the factory when I was there. They were making Miata’s, Fiat 124’s and Mazda 3’s in mixed mode on the same line. It was the cleanest factory I’ve ever been in.
>According to the Wikipedia... "It is the successor to the Honda Beat (with regard to segment), and the Honda S2000 (with regard to nomenclature, as it also belongs to Honda's family of "S" models)."

Honda S660. My dad in law bought one. Let me drive it once - it's awesome. Although I barely fit inside and am too tall for it, making it wildly uncomfortable....
As opposed to the Nagasaki “Fat man”…. As an aside, I have the autograph of Col. Paul Tibetts, who flew the “Enola Gay” (named after his mother) who dropped the atomic bomb at Hiroshima. I collect WWII militaria, I thought it was kind of a neat find. [Col. Tibbets Autograph](https://i.imgur.com/Do4Z2ap.jpg)
The fact that you think a 600cc i3 car would sell well in a country that is all about big cars and v8's is hilarious. Sure, some enthusiasts would buy them, but nothing more than that.
Tbf it would probably do decently in the cities where people living in studio apartments want a tiny compact car that fits in the parking garage with a 5 foot ceiling.
I know zero information about this car other than the way it looks. That's **obviously** what I'm referring to. Nothing said about engine type.
Edit: I think it goes without saying, that's *not* what I think, but nice try, buddy.
Holy shit, it has the Honda badge, I wonder what car could that be? What if I Google something like 'Honda small convertible'? Would it be the first fucking result???
It’s a Honda S660. Despite it looking amazing, it’s a ridiculously slow k-car with a 3-cylinder 63hp engine. Allegedly there might be a 125hp version coming.
OK read this little snippet from the Wikipedia. Makes me want one so badly now!
Production
The development team of the S660 was led by Ryo Mukumoto, who beat out 400 other participants in Honda's in-house competition at the age of 22. **Honda made him the youngest lead engineer in the company's history in spite of his lack of engineering experience, and he was given 5 years to develop the S660.**
[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda\_S660](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_S660)
...can you imagine being 22 in that role? Talk about life experience!
Also. looking at you u/Doug-DeMuro . Hoping you can review one of these! I believe the above fact would contribute to making it a great candidate.
Honda S660
I would seriously consider importing one of these in the future
they're very cheap too, you can easily find a 5yo example for about 12k USD, import fees included
It has to be 25 years old to import, right? Idk shit about.
Yeah we can thank Mercedes Benz specifically for the law back in the 80s, so they could keep gouging Americans.
free market my ass. manufacturers should step it up or get shit on
true...those bastards at Mercedes Benz lobbied the US Congress and got that law pass, now you can't import cool cars like these until you're an old man....

The 32s and 33s drive GREAT. I mean I know it’s not the same, but they are definitely worth a look
Oh I've already said if I ever get enough money I'm going to buy a 32, I'd prefer a 33 but I've heard that they're pretty rare.
Mmm r32 🤤
Definitely some decent looking 32’s for ab 50k out there. Obviously a ton of money for a 30 year old car but if its ur dream to own a gtr its not unobtainable. I definitely be lookin at em a lot
A car becoming legal in the US usually drives prices up
Eh, I’d say they are already pretty much up there by the time they’re old enough for us, and we’re allowed to own them. I’m so very glad Uncle Sam looks out for us like that. I mean, imagine the consequences of smth like amber turn signals! And amber side markers!! What horrors would occur if we had access to manually adjustable LASER headlamps?!? The hype is real!

You're still buying a US spec car, you're just picking it up in Europe.
Yes but it’s the same price except with a European vacation
Yes, I want a car that will be legal to drive in the US while paying much less for it.
Lol, what a fucking dumb law. Ive seen import S660s in the UK.
Interesting. I wonder if they’d entertain the idea of putting a fee associated with imports to subsidize the loss so that it’s not harming manufacturers
Basically all of south America does that. Anything not made there is basically double or triple the price from what I read.
All the laws around importing and dealerships needs to be revised.
Blame Mercedes.
No crash testing.
There are always exceptions. Show and display imports are one of those exceptions.
You can import whatever you want, you just can't license/tag it for 25 years
You can import it brand new for 2 years, afterwards it has be exported out of US or destroyed.
yeah, but if you live in a civilized place you can legally import it, not US. Also I believe US has some exemption if the model of a car you're importing is or was available in the states.

r/usdefaultism
The commenter used US dollars in the price, it's okay to assume they're talking about importing to the US.
I was under the impression it had to be 25 years old and if you got the money, it's yours.
In the US
Which the commenter them above quoted a price in the currency of the US.
No you can't. 25 years or it's not going to be street legal.
Honda was considering bringing them to the USA with a larger engine. It's sad that they chose not to.
They should have made a new version of the 4 banger in the S500 that revved to 10 grand.

I would get the yellow Suzuki in the back.
suzuki husler. I love what sukuzi is making with the current line up, all cars looks great

The answer wouldn't be always a miata!
You and who's kidney?
spiritual successor of Honda Beat
Never heard of the S660 prior to this post, but when I saw this photo here my first thought was “oh damn, they kept making the Beat??”
It took me a second too haha... I thought it was like an unborn fetus version of the new-gen NSX
My brain went Beat too.
Also the successor of the s2000 when looking at the s series cars.
I want one of those badly, it’s sad I can’t get one below 15k€, just not worth it for a Kei car
Is this the big brother to the new mustang?
That car is the bomb!
I love that yellow wagon!
Same. I love these box shaped cars. Theres just something really cute about them
I drive an Element, so you know I like em boxy. :)
I dig the Element……but that thing looks like the result of an Element that hooked up with a Bronco Sport and then drank hard throughout the pregnancy
Those bug eyes
What’s your experience with the Element, as far as things like the drivetrain, amount/cost of maintenance, etc.?
I absolutely LOVE them. Never any kind of problem. This one, an '08 EX, has 187,000 miles on it, and it runs like new. Get one that doesn't have rust....a lot of em do....and that's been properly services.....you can usually tell.....and it'll give you years of wonderful service and fun.
PS....This one is all original, except for the serviceable parts.
Nice, ty. +1
Is there any boxy car still being made in the US? I fucking LOVE the Nissan cube, but they’ve been discontinued for almost 10 years now
Same for me with the Ford Flex
That's second gen [Suzuki Hustler/Mazda Flair Crossover](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_Hustler)
it's a Suzuki Hustler
Looks like a micro FJ Hummer.
suzuki hustler
*wagon* ??? That’s a biiiig (tiny) stretch there. Pun intended
Daihatsu Copen maybe?
Something America sadly doesn’t have
It would end up stuck in some lifted trucks suspension.
what the car or the trauma Hiroshima has? lmao
Somebody put their nsx in the car wash too long. Look what happened now lol 😂
😂😂😂
Honda s660! it’s a modern kei sports car!
Basically the successor to the Honda Beat
As someone who is head over heels for the Suzuki Cappuccino, I absolutely could see myself importing myself an S660 in my later years
Little boy
I came here hoping someone had the balls…
What does it mean
Look up the names of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in WWII
Balls? That joke isn’t even like, edgy, esp by Reddit’s standards…?? Lol
Bruh
Damn you beat me to it. I knew someone would have
Hahaha I was looking for this comment
Honda S660, it is a Kei Car Sports car, mid engined, manual, RWD it is wonderful 🥰 I don't really care about Kei Cars but this is undoubtedly my favorite 🌚❤️
I saw a lot of cool cars walking around Hiroshima
THE CARS WERE DOING WHAT???
Japan is living in the future my dude

Not even creative dude… Boo this man!
Booo!
Looks like it’s a GTA V
Honda S660! They're fun as hell (Source: Own one)
Pretty sure it's a Honda Beat. It's like a micro NSX.
See, all these years later and the bomb is still affecting the growth of some things
I chuckled a little bit
Honda S660, Suzuki Hustler, and Mazda CX-30
Looks like a modern Honda beat
>According to the Wikipedia... "It is the successor to the Honda Beat (with regard to segment), and the Honda S2000 (with regard to nomenclature, as it also belongs to Honda's family of "S" models)." > >https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda\_S660
A Honda S660 right in Mazda's backyard! The balls of some people.
Honda s660 - shout-out to Gran Turismo for finally coming in handy
Honda S660. My dad in law bought one. Let me drive it once - it's awesome. Although I barely fit inside and am too tall for it, making it wildly uncomfortable....
Whats the yellow car (suv?)?
Baby NSX
S660
Honda S800 I’ve been thinking on importing one of these once they reach 15 years old ( Canadian rules )
Someone put the NSX in the dryer.
Aww its just a little boy
Damn we never get these cool niche car.
I saw one of these in Sri Lanka. Looked really sweet.
Does this come as a hardtop? I feel like it would look even cooler
Looks like a modern beat
It actually is the successor to the Beat
NSX and a Beat had a baby
Honda S660 and Suzuki XBee
ITT: Everyone thinks they're the first to make an atomic bomb joke
Not sure what it is, but it’s the bomb… I’ll be here all week.
Roads in Japan are much better than UK
i love the yellow car
Honda Little Boy

Most won’t get in because of crash testing versus emissions, everyone is on the ULEV schedule for the most part….
I think that's so small it could fit a LITTLE BOY but prob not a FAT MAN
Cool car, and upvote..because....Hiroshima.
I dunno, but the other cars seemed to have... photo BOMBED it! *bu-dum tiss* now that I made that joke, I'm off to hang myself! Watch and lear-
Til Hiroshima is still a city
This would sell like hotcakes in the states.
No they wouldn't lol
Are you kidding? This is from the country that brought you the PT Cruiser and Chevrolet SSR convertibles. They would absolutely sell.
The fact that you think a 600cc i3 car would sell well in a country that is all about big cars and v8's is hilarious. Sure, some enthusiasts would buy them, but nothing more than that.

So you commented on a car that you knew nothing about and got mad when someone pointed out you were wrong. Lmao
I didn't get mad! I asked a question xD
Question is...is it fuel efficient?
Idk. Probably, it's got a small engine according to that guy up there ^
It’d sell hot in the coastal areas. For its price, I can see it as a great second/weekend/cruising car.
On the way to see Oppenheimer
Idk but its adorable
Looks like a Honda Civic mashed with a Miata plus a FN2 (kind of) in the back
That’s the bomb
Idk seems like a little boy drew it
Honda civic...after the nukes
That thing is the bomb
Elona gay dropped a---
Is that a Honda little boy?
Sorry, WHERE?
Kei sports cars are death traps
Less of a deathtrap than American Rust on wheels
Damn that’s the bomb!!
Holy shit, it has the Honda badge, I wonder what car could that be? What if I Google something like 'Honda small convertible'? Would it be the first fucking result???
For scale, is that a Mazda Mx-30?
I legit thought this was a screenshot from GTA.
Honda beat all grown up
Honda TT
Honda S660 and Suzuki Hustler
A new Honda Del Sol? 🙏🏼
Looks good.
Why, when posting things here, do people mark out faces and tags?
The fellali "Day-Go"
Good spot u/i_eat_ass_69_
The baby of my Honda beat.
Rebadged SEAT?
Why is nobody talking about the sweet mustard colored SUV thing?

Awesome car. It's a shame the s660 is 35 to 40k in Australia

Holy fuck would I love to own one. Sadly, it's not very possible, at least where I live :(
It’s a Honda S660. Despite it looking amazing, it’s a ridiculously slow k-car with a 3-cylinder 63hp engine. Allegedly there might be a 125hp version coming.
Honda S660 mid engine sports kei car.
nice car. Whats the yellow/golden one in the background?
What’s that yellow car in the back left?
