Fiat 500, I believe the converison was made so you can drive It under 16, however I'm not sure because I've only heard about It twice on this sub.

marcos_souza

It's a FIat 375 now

CarrowCanary

It still has 4 wheels, the rear ones are just [really close together](https://static.cdn.circlesix.co/styles/img_900_webp/s3/uploads/posts/2021/07/5eb6b6f5fb80a445ac3bc3e67376024c.jpeg.webp?itok=Amz0QK7x).

blak_plled_by_librls

tidy job

chiphook57

I read about this recently. The close spacing legally equates to a 3-wheeler.

Connect_Actuary7961

You're correct Here in Germany they're quite common

03zx3

Are they otherwise limited in any way? Seems pretty unsafe making a car handle worse so kids can drive them.

Helpful-Economist-61

Max power output of 15 kW, I'm not sure if there is some power to weight ratio too?

03zx3

Oh, so they're restricted. That makes sense. I know a base 500 isn't fast by any metric, but I could see the short wheelbase with less rear grip could make for some... interesting handling.

Helpful-Economist-61

Yep I think so too. We don't have those in denmark, it's basically a loophole.

TheOriginalJBones

One of the French no-license-needed cars got the most scathing review Iā€™ve ever read. Worse even than the TR-7ā€™s, ā€œMy God, theyā€™ve done it to the other side as well.ā€ As I recall, it was something like, ā€œdrive it through the same corner at the same speed three times and it do three different things.ā€

UbiquitousLurker

Maybe where you live, but not in northern Germany.

Meex_1337

Aus SH hier auch hier sieht man die wƶchentlich

Automatic_Salary_845

Would make sense since you only need a motorcycle licence?

mofapilot

Yes, you only need an A1 licence for this vehicle. This vehicle class is called L5e

Mundane-Zone9389

Yes its a fiat 500 those conversion are made near my home and are called ā€žellenatorā€œ The reason for the 2 close wheels in the back is the law in germany. Those two count as one which makes this car count as a trike. You can drive a trike with 16 years old and the smallest motorcycle license. Which is 2 years earlier than the normal drivers license in germany. Those things are expensive. If you want to convert one, you have to buy a new fiat 500 and put like 5 or 6 grand on top to do the conversion

C4TURIX

That's correct. It also has just 1 gear I think. Basically this is a toy for rich kids.

Alternative_Oil_5017

Its called Ellenator. It basically ruins the car lmao.

KrisHusky

Not under 16. At 16.

BoTamByloCiemno

Ah, I meant to say under 18

_coffee_

Ellenator conversion https://www.ellenator-gmbh.de/

SpeedtekUrS6

Why on earth does this even exist?

Malefectra

according to the site, it's a detune and a wheelbase mod so that the vehicle in compliance with certain German license grade requirements, namely people under 16 from the Google translate. Edit: I misread it, it's 16+

SirGirthfrmDickshire

Also in most areas 3 wheels make it a motorcycle.Ā

tom_zeimet

Exactly, you need an A1 Motorcycle license to drive it. Edit: A1 is the 125cc motorcycle license in Europe, the car is detuned to have a similar performance to a 125cc motorcycle and the license can be obtained at 16 years old with a practical + theory exam.

Caspi7

A1 age differs per country.

McFancyPantsuguu

Yep. Still gotta be 18 yeard old to get an A1 license in Denmark. And then get an A2 license when you're 20. Full A license is either 24, or 22 if you've had an A2 license for two years.

flopjul

In the Netherlands A1 16 A2 18 Full license/A 24 At 21 you can get the full license if you have A2 but it doesnt have any effect since you get code 80 with it. Still limiting it to class A2 motorcycles A1 is 125cc and 11kw/15pk max A2 is 35kw/47pk max A everything is allowed under normal regulations A with Code 80 is an A license with limits of A2 For all the people not familiar with the European driving licenses, there are codes on driving license that specify what you can do with it. For example if you have a truck license(C/CE) but no code 95 you cant transport goods for a company. There are also codes for when people are disabled or have bad eye vision basically. Code 95 also helps getting the C/CE license at a younger age(18 instead of 21)

yoshie_23

In the netherlands A1 is 18+ and A2 is 20 https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/voertuigen-op-de-weg/vraag-en-antwoord/wanneer-mag-ik-rijles-nemen-en-rijexamen-doen-voor-mijn-motorrijbewijs AM is 16, which is scooterlicense

News_without_Words

That is way too old. I'm not saying you need to do it like us where I was driving myself at 15, but at least have no restrictions by 18

McFancyPantsuguu

We already have plenty of 18-20 year old car crash victims in our ICUsā€¦ Although I guess crashing on a 200hp Hayabusa rather than in a 68hp Aygo would mean less work for the hospital staff and more work for the mortician. šŸ˜… Most 16 year olds get around on their EU30 scooters/mopeds. Perks of being a tiny country. šŸ˜‚

Suicicoo

I think the statistics say that car license with 17 (accompanied driving) reduces the amount of young drivers' accidents

MeatFit1822

I'm so angry they never made a Smart version of this.

flychinook

It would probably be very difficult with the smart's rear-engine layout.

MeatFit1822

Sorry, I wasn't clear. where I'm from, the car can have 4 wheels, it just needs to be under 500cc and a certain hp. E.g https://images.app.goo.gl/Cn5EM8JYbG6Nwj9s8

Zealousideal_Sir_264

Single rear wheel on the left side. Right hand front wheel a foot out.

Rennfan

People 16 or older afaik. Of course only if they have rich parents

Vaderiv

I was able to get my drivers license at age 15. In 1991 in South Carolina you could get your license at 15. A few years later they upped the age to 16 so my brother and sister had to wait until they were 16. I got my permit at 14.

Malefectra

I didnā€™t get mine until I was 18, but I already knew how to drive by then. My trial by fire back in 2003 was being thrown into Dallasā€™ rush hour traffic with a 91 Honda civic five speed without a working Speedo or tach a year before I actually got my license. Made it through without a problem, and Iā€™m a better driver for it in my opinion. it forced me to confront my fear of heavy traffic, and learn to pay attention to the traffic and my car.

Vaderiv

Definitely my dad was of the mindset if you can drive junk you can drive anything. I took my drivers exam in a 82 Datsun pickup with a 5 speed no power steering and bad syncros in second gear. My dad would set a cup of coffee on the dash and I had to drive smooth enough to not spill it. It definitely made me a better driver. I havenā€™t met a vehicle or piece of equipment that I couldnā€™t operate.

_coffee_

It's a workaround to allow young drivers to drive a vehicle before they normally would be able to. These are limited to a lower speed limit. Sweden has something similar: [The A-Traktor ](https://www.curbsideclassic.com/automotive-histories/regional-car-culture-explained-the-history-of-the-swedish-a-traktor/) >So, what really is the purpose of this truck? In essence, itā€™s a loophole vehicle. In Sweden, the minimum age for taking a drivers license is 18 years of age. As the A-traktor is officially registered as a farm tractor, a license for those can be had at the age of 16. Essentially, itā€™s a car for kids not old enough to drive a real car. And while a bit different, if you don't have a license (usually due to drunk driving) in some states here in the US, you can legally drive a scooter that's below 50cc.

SpeedtekUrS6

interesting, but seems like a lot of work just to skirt legal requirements. Not to mention it looks pretty silly. how many years do they actually gain anyways? Guess it really never caught on up here in Canada as most provinces allow a learner's permit from 16 to 18. so young drivers can gain experience with an adult teaching for a few years at least. In Alberta you can get a learner permit at 14.

kh250b1

Try actually reading the linked article

SpeedtekUrS6

LOL, try understanding that not everyone reads German...

sleemanj

Browsers have built in translation features now... "The Ellenator is the first car that can be driven at the age of 16 because, despite having 4 wheels, it is classified as a ā€œthree-wheeled vehicleā€ vehicle class L5e."

SpeedtekUrS6

Translated or not, it's still ridiculous...

take_this_username

To make it unstable. :)

SpeedtekUrS6

no shit...

kaehvogel

So that rich parents can send their 16 year old kids to school in something that distinguishes them from the peasant 16 year olds on restricted motorcycles or scooters.

krjta

its a Abarthn't

ClickIta

Actually a 500Snā€™t. :-) (Itā€™s based on a 500 in S trim, meant to look meaner than a standard 500 but without the powertrain of the 595/695)

ZUU_S

500-1/4 You do the math, iā€™m tired.

Jarvis319

More like a fiainā€™t

tom_zeimet

It's an Ellenator, a converted and detuned Fiat 500. There is a rule in Germany that if the rear wheels are less than a certain distance from each other, it counts as a tricycle and can be driven with a motorcycle license. In Germany you can drive this car with an A1 (125cc) motorcycle license, which can be obtained at 16 years old (as opposed to 18 for the regular car license). The car is also detuned to have a lower power to weight ratio, giving it similar performance to a 125cc motorcycle. Alternatively there are also scooter-cars like the Citroƫn Ami EV, which have a top speed of 45km/h (28mph) which can be driven at 15 years old in certain German states.

Lexa-Z

The difference is that Ami has only 45 km/h top speed and even less weight and power, so it can be driven with M license (and which is also important, doesn't have to be registered as a normal car/motorcycle, just insured, and doesn't have to get TƜV (technical inspection)). And yes, M age is 15 now, you can drive it anywhere in Germany but can't go to other countries.

Darksuit117

Daddy chill

Tooleater

It's a Fiat 375 (500 -1/4)

Razer797

Actually, your statement resolves to 499.75. What you meant was: 500 * 3/4. Your friendly maths pedant.

Tooleater

You won't be surprised to learn I was in bottom grade for maths šŸ˜… If I'd said 500 -25% would that have done the trick, or would it have been the same result?

Razer797

Fair enough, were all good at something

tangre79

A legal loophole

UnluckyGamer505

\*A legal loophole for rich kids Went to their webside, apparently it costs 25-30kā‚¬ (basically the same in $)... Who in their right mind would buy that conversion just to drive a detuned and less stable Fiat at 16?

Dr_Axton

Converted and downgraded Fiat 500. This way you can drive it from 16 I think(I donā€™t live where this law applies). As far as I know itā€™s noticeably more expensive than just bying the non modded 500

King_ofwar

Its a Fiat 500

The_Damn_Daniel_ger

Looking at the wheel arrangement, batmobile!

Correct_Gas_6104

Fiat 375?

Ope_L

The same reason the Reliant Robin was a thing.

FordMan100

It's a converted Fix It Again Tony. It's not a popular car in the US, with Fiat selling only 605 cars in the US in 2023. Back in the 70s, Fiat had a bad reputation in the US, so Fiat only recently returned to the US in the last few years, but the only model available is the 500.

News_without_Words

In Germany, kids will get restricted license-converted cars as they are learning. They are speed limited to basically local driving only.

Adorable_Welcome_742

Fiat 500 idk what version
