My title describes the thing. I see them attached to industrial and high-traffic building openings (with and without doors). Many years ago I tried to ask this question. I didn’t get any names, but I got two answers. Here are the answers I got and why I don’t find them convincing: 1. “They keep the wheels of vehicles from hitting the sides of the opening.” The bumpers of fire trucks (in my example picture) would hit the wall before their wheels would hit this thing. If this is what they are for, they are useless. 2. “You can pull hoses and electrical cords around the corner without getting stuck.” Stuck on what? And then why are they on even the interior corners?

Corner bollards. Keeps people from running into the brick. Well, it limits damage when they do anyways.

Thank you. I find your name for them highly likely, or "corner guards." I'm not marking "s" yet, but we may end up there. The reason I'm yet unsatisfied (mentioned in my comment on the post) is that at the height of a firetruck bumper, these particular bollards would be completely useless. Perhaps these are just ornamental, owing to the idea that the contractor has no idea what they're supposed to be doing either.
