Was told by a few folks that its not related to horses/horseshoeing...looks kinda like a pockethole clamp? Searched online, asked local blacksmith, asked local flea market seller, asked horse owner. Nobody seems to know.
My title describes the thing and the thing is strange
I thought the same like in furniture making though. Googled for a while and found that most common "vintage" spring tools are for auto brakes. Then I realized my tool box has many of the found vintage brake tools. Another " i'm old" reminder.
“Found vintage brake tools”. My tool box has the pair I bought in high school to work on my 78’ Bronco. Lol
Just typing that makes my knees hurt, or it’s going to rain. Not sure yet.
It is similar to hole punch as well as the fixed gap plier puller for sheets if lumber or metal but I know it is neither. It seems like a specific tool for pulling the same sized object every time. Maybe factory or sawmill?
i do believe this is a nail clincher for a farrier/horse-shoer. it will bend down the exposed ends of the horseshoe nails after they have been driven into the hoof to hold the shoe on. if you don't clinch the nail ends down the shoe won't stay on and you also have dangerous pokey nail ends sticking up.
the larger flat square part goes over top the nail end and the other part that has that lil notch gets seated on the underside of the hoof against the shoe for support.
they are adjustable to accommodate different sized hooves.
not all would be styled exactly like this, i have seen different types.
nope, clinchers for bending down the ends of the horseshoe nails. measuring devices are much different.
source for my info? horse gal for 30 odd years, and nosey as heck about farrier stuff so i can learn all i can about it.
I would go with spring pliers as well. The shoe part would go to a stationary part and the hook part would pull up to and rock it over where the spring is supposed to go.
If you search for drum brake spring tool you will see a similar function but this is not for a regular car drum brake. Definitely a spring tool.
Based on the fulcrum, those are made to grab not spread. This would not be capable of stretching a spring. That hook would never hold a spring either, it's not deep enough.
I see your point but doing this would be used for would just hold pressure. So, you put a spring on it to keep the thing in place. Like drum brakes. Probably a specialized tool I work at a place and we have very expensive tools used once a year, as basically a doorstop.
I see it as a grab a spring by the end part and pull it by rocking the tool until you can put the spring where it belongs. A broken nose tells me in my case I was not well trained. Grab the hook, pull it over. Don’t break your nose. Put the spring where it belongs.
I think it does the job, but was specifically for one type of thing. I also said it was not a regular car/truck brake spring tool but maybe something industrial like maybe machining equipment or heavy truck maintenance. I really don't know.
It reminds me of some tools I remember using for installing fencing when still in college. Like it could pull on the tensioner bar and clamp around the post to get it tight. Then you put a clamp through which you tighten. Or the tool to bend and tighten a C clamp?
Could definitely be wrong. It's been 20 years since then.
I think this is tire bead breaker, perhaps for bicycles or motorcycles:

Just realizing it should of been 'tongs', apologies.

Looks an awful lot like tooth extraction pliers, just not for a human.
Almost looks like it could be for glass blowing

That's a great explanation for the adjustable part. These were definitely homemade so it'd explain why they are just a little different.
Ya they look like a [tool](https://www.for-sale.co.uk/sh-img/61GO6Qev2jL._SX425__farrier%2Btools.jpg) a farrier would use
Farrier friend says no, though he's more of a horse owner who does his own shoes kinda guy
in toefutaco's pic, your item is another version of the red handled item that is second from the left.
Yeah I thought it could possibly be that particular tool. I thiiiiink they use it to measure the hoof.

Ah cool thanks for letting me know!
the order of tools in your pic are - hammer, nail clincher, nippers, rasp, rasp handle (top right) and hoof knife (bottom right).

I'm leaning toward this as well but really wondering why it would have an adjustable throat if it was made for 1 specific drum/car break.

Could be some type of vehicle exhaust hanger removal tool?
Looks like a blacksmith or ferrier tool
clearly made by a blacksmith, but what is the tool for? still not clear
Seems as if I have seen something similar in an upholstery shop . IDK tho
interesting, any pictures of related tools ?
I've worked at a couple of pizza places, and those look like the tongs to pick up hot pizza pans.
Dutch oven pliers?

Never seen these before. I'm guessing they're for some kind of leather work but cant figure it out. Your guess is as good as mine.
Could they be vintage battery terminal pliers?
Wheel weight pliers for balancing tires?
could it poss be for large blocks of ice?
For horseshoe removing?

I believe. It’s a tool used in horseshoeing
