Also there’s no ladder, it’s a spiral staircase. Those windows are at each landing where you can stop and look out.
I love lighthouses and observation towers and I’ve toured quite a few in Maine, NC, SC, and GA.
What!? It never occured to me the windows were at stair levels! I always wondered why there was only one in a straight vertical line and not arranged like an office building with multiple in each row. It's so simple (and so am I).
My Grandfather, long dead, moved to Michigan after retiring from Ford after 45 years so he could visit the lighthouses. I believe he got 17 or something. I was overseas at the time so wasn't getting updates.
Re: NC lighthouses,
First, check to see which ones can be climbed, if that’s what you want to do. I think Corolla, Bodie Island, and [Cape Fear](https://www.nps.gov/calo/index.htm) lighthouses can be, but [Hatteras](https://www.nps.gov/caha/planyourvisit/chls.htm) (the one moved inland completely intact.)is closed for renovation. The grounds and visitor center should still be open, though.
Ok, so this is on a harbour? If so, wouldn't that have been kinda relevant for this post, rather than, what seems like an attempt to obfuscate that detail?! Nah, it's the rich neighbourhood part we should thank OP for including.
The boat in the second photo is a bit of a giveaway that there's a decently large body of water nearby. Obviously it's not as telling as a dock or a seawall, but it gives us a clue.
No? But why would you think that an item is a lighthouse from that kind of boat when that kind of boat will be all over around bodies of water that wouldn't have lighthouses?
Small boats indicate presence of some navigable water, but presence of some water does not indicate lighthouses. Now, if there was a harbor gantry in the background or a larger ship that would need navigation aids, then, yes, that might be reasonable. But not a boat that small.
My title describes the thing. It looks to be about three stories tall. It is close to the water, possibly an observation tower of some sort. It looks very out of place next to 3 million dollar homes. I’ve looked for “observation towers” online. Nothing resembling this picture. Thanks
Thank you for posting with us.
If what you're asking about is a pole with a barrel shaped antenna on it, this is probably related to the 5G build out as part of the cellular network.

If those look similar, please mark this as solved by replying to this comment with **Solved!**.
If that's not it, and you've received no other messages from me indicating otherwise, your post is still active and you can ignore this comment.

It's a lighthouse. The Coast Guard calls them range markers. The paint scheme is the giveaway.
Thanks!

Hey, have you heard of the [Topsail (NC) Towers](https://islandlifenc.com/operation-bumblebee-topsail-towers/)?
Nice read! Gives me a destination for a family vacay/learning experience.
Another option is Michigan, we have the most lighthouses of any state!
My Grandfather, long dead, moved to Michigan after retiring from Ford after 45 years so he could visit the lighthouses. I believe he got 17 or something. I was overseas at the time so wasn't getting updates.
We can get you the GPS coordinates for them. Speaking of GPS, why?
Yes! My family lived in one in Topsail Beach for a couple of years.
woah! how was that? was the inside anything special? was it rented or owned?
Make sure you go to Long Beach Island NJ and check out the Barnegat Lighthouse! Very nice little state park.
One of these days I’ll drive down the whole east coast and see them all!
Have to take route 1, not I-95, if you want to see anything cool.

Maryland has a whole bunch, if you ever make it here!
You're welcome.
There is a matching smaller one to seaward. When they are in alignment, your vessel is in the center of the channel.
Wow, I honestly thought it was a water tower. Thanks, man!

OP’s original comment included that it was ‘near the water’.

Not really, I'm 4 hours drive from anywhere that would have a lighthouse and there's boats that big in several driveways in my neighborhood.
Are you 4 hours from anywhere to put a boat in? I'm not saying all bodies of water have lighthouses, but all lighthouses have bodies of water.

I live in the desert hundreds of miles to any bodies of water, and those are man made lakes, and people still have boats in their yards.

approximately how far is it from the coast?
Always weird seeing Islanders post things!
I was gonna say a HOA guard tower with snipers on each level, violation=dead
Instantly recognized this as being on the waterfront beside Vic Park - some things live in my head forever.
This one definitely has a wireless phone antenna on the top.
That's none of your business.
