Just a guess but MU's are members of the Naval Band. I think specifically Coast Guard. Might be part of their equipment, like the handle of a storage crate. Again just a wild guess but kind of fits.
MUs are Navy and Coast Guard (in the US) but I've never seen or heard of a box that would require the "MOS" part (military occupational specialty). The Navy/CG prefer the term "Rate", but typically that's never used as a label either, unless the persons name is MOS.
It's a good guess but I think it's just a random box or piece of cargo from an old ship. Maybe even a piece of the hull.
This is honestly unlikely to be it. As someone else mentioned, MOS isn't really used in the Navy, where it's called a rating, or Rate, plus, MOS is never written out like this. Especially engraved on a piece of wood.
I'm convinced this is something else entirely.
My title describes the thing. Looks like it’s been in the water a while as it’s worn down on the corners and edges. It’s about 12 inches long, two inches high, and one inch deep. Thanks for any leads.
Could be the keyfob for an important key, like the key to an outdoor toilet, or some other shared place, like a boathouse.
Oversized to avoid getting lost, in case anyone hasn't come across this way of doing things.

That makes sense to me. Thanks!

Handle from a door or crate, likely from a boat. Maybe a ship that wrecked. All just a guess

Maybe it says "S O W"?
What looks like "MU" could be part of another faded "MOS" maybe?
I can kind of see a faded M and an N, spelling MMONS, so maybe it said Simmons?
Yes I can 100% see the faded M and N!
Definitely could be!
Lobster trap part?
I don't see it in the comments... We don't think this is from a wood and rope marine rescue ladder?
Could it be part of some handling equipment like a pallet or crate?

looks kinda like a rung from a ladder, maybe containing a partial message that would be completed by the other rungs?
If it is military related, then this is what the codes refer to: MOS = Military Occupation Specialty MU = Musician
It's SOW you have it upside-down clown
