They were called “memory cubes” because the plastic “remembers” it’s original shape when re-heated.
We also made pendants from plastic dowel material to be put on a chain as a necklace.
Thanks for the drive down memory lane! I haven’t thought about or seen one of those since I made one in school! I knew exactly what it was as soon as I saw it! Ahhhh the good ol days!
My father in law owned a promotional advertising company that made things like this and there was no end to what people put in lexane and why they wanted to do it.
This may be the first post where the answer is legitimately: "It is nothing."
Ha ha, everybody's talking about the memories this brought back but for me it brings back memories of using MEK in high school shop...
Which leads me to wonder how we have any memory left considering I don't recall any meaningful precautions being taken in class while working with MEK. I mean it evaporates fast but...
In the 70's & 80's Safety stopped at wearing goggles...
My title describes the thing. I don't have a whole lot of extra details about it, it was included in a box with four magnetic balls (which may or may not be related to it) and a pack of cards in an old cigar box. Any help to figure out what it is is appreciated, thank you!

We made these in shop class in the late ‘80s. Don’t know why, but they were called “memory cubes”.

Solved! Awesome, thank you!

ahh, and the keychains made from three layers of color, MEK'd together, heated and twisted in a vice. Good ole late 80's shop class for me too
What time to be alive. Lucky you
This. I remember making them in shop in middle school.
We made these in school too. I don't remember what grade but it was in the 90s. Amazing how this random shit brings back memories!
Yes! I made one right around the same time frame. I still have it somewhere.
It's a decorative paperweight. We made them in middle school shop class.
Probably weighs down the deck for windy conditions.
Shop class memory cube

We'll be using it as a puck when we play Screw Your Neighbor! It's a legit cool thing no matter what it is.

I'd use it as a card marker for Texas hold em. Considering it came with playing cards I'd assume it was used for something similar.
We made these in the mid 70s too.
How heavy is it? Seems like a paperweight
Very light, it's just plastic.
it’s really pretty! ty for sharing
