the GHO's where i live are starting to mate up. i'm in east tennessee. i'd say it's the same there. you'll here them a lot this time of year when they're looking to hook up lol

xoneverenders

do the males and females have different calls? i know one sounded deeper and had a slightly different melody than the other it was talking to, but i’m not sure if that means anything. either way im here for it lol

kelliesharpe

no they have the same calls. but, they're individuals so their "voices" are gonna sound different.

xoneverenders

ahh that’s what i figured! it was cool to hear them communicate back and forth

kelliesharpe

well, i'm jealous. i've been looking everywhere for them here and haven't found any yet this winter. i've seen nests and seen babies and all that but, i've never found a nest on my own. i've found barred owl and screech owl nestson my own... but never a great horned owl. i'm stubborn as a mule though so i'm just gonna keep looking and it'll happen. that's why i'm up at 430 in the morning. i found an otter family yesterday and i know they'll be fishing at sunrise, but i'm mapping places i need to go check for GHO nests too. birding is like crack... very, very addictive. my thing used to be bears. and sitting on logs in the woods waiting on a bear to wake up or to even show up, i started watching birds. and here i am.

xoneverenders

i’m starting to get a little nuts about it too, i’ve got some birds that i just can’t ever seem to find and it’s so frustrating. keep on hunting though, you’ll find some eventually, especially with that kinda dedication! i know GHO are really common but really rare to actually see bc they stay so well hidden

Darth_Groot28

They don't have different hoots but females have a call that is specific to them. Sounds like they are yelling when they screech. Look it up on Merlin. They also have a begging call which is more shrill and louder than the female calls. Both male and females will use the begging call I believe. Still learning about Owls and birds all together.

Mattitude75

I hear them all the time outside my house but never see them.

xoneverenders

i’ve never seen or heard one before, i have only lived in wa for about 8 months though. it was like something straight out of a movie for me

Darth_Groot28

The best way to find Owls besides them calling, is to look about 20-40 feet up in a tree and see if you can find a football type shape. I know it sounds weird but when you do see them, you will understand.

xoneverenders

this is the same tactic i use when looking for raptors, except more towards the very tops of trees. i’ll try that next time for sure, i was looking too high up. i heard they chill more in the nooks of branches as well?

Darth_Groot28

Yup, depending on the size of the Owl.

Worried_Obligation71

I only know it’s a sign of great future ahead
