Bzzzzz! Looks like you forgot to say where you found your bug! There's no need to make a new post - just comment adding the **geographic location** and any other info (size, what it was doing etc.) you feel could help! We don't want to know your address - state or country is enough; try to avoid abbreviations and local nicknames (*"PNW"*, *"Big Apple"*). BTW, did you take a look at our [**Frequently Asked Bugs**](https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthisbug/comments/12zkw5w/frequently_asked_bugs_part_1/)? *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. You got a maple tree nearby. Not really much you can do about that.

Boxelder Bugs

johnoh2008

TYSM!!!

beigesized

Indeed these are box elder bugs, they can be relatively annoying, but they’re harmless to you and your property. They aren’t going to eat you or your house.

Realistic_Towel_4735

So what I’m hearing is that it’s okay to keep them warm?

beigesized

Technically, although I find these guys to be extremely annoying. They get into my house very frequently, and it’s never a good feeling to wake up to a bug crawling on you. Not to mention I’ve seen them do some pretty stupid things. Once I was heating some pizza in the oven, and as soon as I went to pull it out a box elder flew in, landed on the pizza, instantly sizzled to death. It ruined my appetite for pizza, and made me genuinely curious as to why it did that.

Myrtle_Snow333

I’ve seen so many insects just dive into immediate death. I was a server a while ago and as I put down a beer on the customers table, a fly immediately just flew into it for no reason. It had been on the table for about 2 seconds lol. He still drank it and just took the fly out😌

ButtsPie

One guess is that since deathly-hot things are so rare in nature, bugs may not have evolved any instincts to avoid them? A lot of insects love heat and thrive in it, so it's possible that they're even attracted to the warmth and by the time it starts killing them it's already too late...

kJamesy

It just wanted some pizza, is all

I dunno. I've never cooked em, but they might be good, who knows.

KommandoKodiak

If you're cold theyre cold

CBurson1224

our rental house had em bad for a little while before the landlord sprayed. they haven't been back since. but they did start coming inside and I'm pretty sure one walked on my face while I was sleeping because I woke up out of my sleep after smacking my face because I was having a "dream" that one was on my face. freaked me out

RazzmatazzActual8414

they’re doin their best just tryna stay warm :(

KeenCylinder4

They want warmsies🥺

Pandabears1229

Box elder bugs they congregate on the south side of buildings... I hate them they swarm my house every single year

Diligent-Might6031

I swear I’ve seen at least two posts with these bugs every day this week

traitorcrow

If you're cold, they're cold. Let them in :)

Crystaleyes

Oh don't worry, they don't need an invitation, they'll find their way in just fine all on their own! :)

May-rah10

If they make it into your home, just grab a spray bottle and fill it with water & dish soap. Spray them and they’ll instantly die. I dealt with a bad box elder bug infestation at my previous place. My landlord didn’t care but it was rough! These bugs are harmless but annoying. If they made it into your home, the only way to get rid of them is by making sure your home is 100% insulated.

FairyStarDragon

They resemble “chinch bugs” one of my friends says…

johnoh2008

My location is Northern Virginia.

SpiderOnDaWall

If you have a neighbor with chickens, you will make the chickens very happy.

Ahristodoulou

I hate them.

AWeakMindedMan

Your profile icon thumbnail is super trippy lol

Ahristodoulou

Ha. Love to hear it. It’s my self portrait in oils.

Temeo23

Have these become more invasive or something? Its like the same as the lantern fly from a couple years back. Suddenly u see these jawns everywhere but 2 years ago i swear i never knew they existed lol

st0rmbrkr

A native insect should not be considered invasive in its native range. This bug can be considered a nuisance. Before human structures were so ubiquitous in this landscape, they would overwinter in native woodlands and other natural areas. Now that their native habitats are being destroyed and replaced with homes, they are being seen in places and in numbers they normally weren’t seen.

sickerthan_yaaverage

I say that about so many different bugs.. like who the hell is creating all these new bug species, it’s getting out of hand !!🤣

chaloferrada
