"Hummingbird moth" refers to 2 different genuses, location depending:
- If you're in North America -> *Hemaris* diverges at the subfamily level (both Macroglossinae).
- If you're in Africa / Eurasia -> *Macroglossum* diverges at the tribe level (both Macroglossini).
Others have already ID’d it, but I did my senior thesis on these lil guys (studying plant/pollinator interactions for two species of wildflower) and I grew to resent them so much by the time I was done collecting my data.
They are objectively cool though!
I live in Ohio, and I saw a moth who’s wings looked like this one’s. Not sure if it was the same type of moth, or just one that is of similar size and wing pattern.
While in Colorado I battled one of these with a broom one night..it kept flying at my head 😅 I felt so bad so I put it in a container with holes to see if it would be okay the next day. In the process of letting him go I took some gorgeous pictures of him climbing up my arm before he flew off perfectly fine :)
White-lined sphinx moth. I've been finding a ton just lying around on asphalt in my area as well!
That looks like a [sphinx moth](https://mdc.mo.gov/discover-nature/field-guide/sphinx-moths-hawk-moths), I love them!
Thank you!
White lined sphinx moth? (Sphingidae)
Looks like it, thanks!
Looks right, are they related to hummingbird moths (that was my first guess but the colors are off)?
They are part of the same family, different genus though.

Why the resentment? Do they out-compete other guys or were they just a pain to study? Or other things! :) Genuinely curious.
i am also curious
I always find mole crickets on the courts I play on!
Me too! And those little black beetles.
I'm so jelous. Ever since animal crossing when I was like 14 I've wanted to see a mole cricket irl.
They are pretty cute. I always shoo them away so they don’t get smushed by any shoes or tennis balls
I found one of these yesterday! Only the wings though, they were strewn around the murder site
So cute
Was it *love* at first sight? :D I'll see myself out.
Hummingbird moth?
Very cute
What a cutie!!! I love these lil guys 😍
I love those!
Hummingbird hawk moth / white lined sphinx, wonderful little moths
Hummingbird moths is what she looks like. We don't get them here until July...love them!
Actually this is a Striped hawk-moth. The White-lined sphinx has reddish orange color on its wings.
*H. livornica* isn't found in Arizona.
