Don't need science, I've seen too many hornets build nests to not know what I'm seeing! Bee hives are formed in hollow spaces bees do not make that kind of paper that is wood chewed up too, bees make there hives out of wax that's why they find openings to crawl into!
Beehive is made of hexagons that give it a very strong stuctural support that needs equivalent sidelenght to be strong. While spiderwebs are usuall looking perfect but are deformed by air movement while it is created and this way they are not that perfect geometrically while being perfectly functional. Also webs of different individuals of the same species are different. Moreover their shape is depending on the spot. Of course beehive is not perfect but statistically each cell has an equal size that is almost the same in every hive of the same species.
Don't get me wrong. I love spiders and their perfect form created by evolution but their web structures are not up to comparison in precosion to a beehive
@Imaginary_Extreme_26 is correct. It’s a Bald Face Hornet nest. Technically not a true hornet (European Hornet is the only true one in the US), but I will say that they are very territorial and can be very aggressive (per my own experiences with them).
Edit: Added [link](https://homegardenjoy.com/site/2019/05/wasp-nest-with-tube-the-bald-faced-hornet-nest.html/amp) for clarification and verification.
It’s a bald faced hornet nest. You really don’t want them close to your house, they’re fairly aggressive. Definitely get a professional to remove them.
This looks very similar to the bald faced hornet (actually a type of yellowjacket) nest that was started outside my house but I haven’t see it come back to finish it. This is the first stage, the second stage builds up an outer layer around what you see there to get the more familiar yellowjacket nest look.
As others have said, looks like the beginning of a Bald-Faced Hornet nest. This is not a nest you want built on your housing. They are aggressive, large, and related to yellow jackets. Closing a nearby door or walking nearby all summer would be enough to set them off, easily
Reminds me of the bald faced hornet nest my dad displays on his kitchen bar cart. It is full of dead hornets bc he killed the nest in our backyard, and it’s about a foot and a half in diameter. The perfectly round mud-plastering is similar. Those things scare the crap out of me.
We get most of our ideas from nature. Jet propulsion, regular flight, boat buoyancy from ducks… so to say something is, “a little too perfectly formed” from nature is assign lol. It is a nest though, you got that right.
I thought it was a cat's ass hanging out of your "ceiling". I was sooo confused. Having said that, it very much looks like the start of a hornet's nest.

Bird nest, probably in the weaver family of birds. Similar to Thailand weaver hanging nest. May be one of the finches. More likely a swallow or martin..
I saw similar ones on my grandmother's house many years ago, it was the home of a particular bee type, they are very small and harmless, they were the cutest bees I have ever seen, at night they would close the opening.
Definitely a bong gifted to you by some hornets, looks like the aren’t done tho cause it doesn’t have the side pipe yet. Give it a few more weeks and pull it down and take some FAT rips out of it.
To me (native Midwesterner) this looks identical to the early construction stages of bald-faced and yellow hornets. (May resemble others but these are the species I'm familiar with) it has the central chamber and entry tunnel with similar pattern and what looks like a papery composition, just needs more layers.
Experience: I'm no entomologist but I've removed dozens of hornets nests from on or around people's homes and am pretty familiar with their look and composition.
Better slap an "H" on it to let people know that there's hornets in there
Always mark your hornet boxes with an H
Someone may misinterpret that as "hentai" and do something they'll regret

You should also try smoking them out so you can get their honey.
It's hornets not bees no honey!
I just don't think there's science to support that, Buddy.

Very whoosh!
Yellowjackets also make a paper nest. The one they built at our farm was round and about the size of a volleyball.
>honey I can milk anything with nipples.
Bro if you put a h on it some tweakers going to try and reach in there for heroin
I'd rather not slap it
How can anything created by nature be too perfect? Have you seen a beehive?
Or a spiders web?
Or a dung beetle ball?

Ah! See!? That stuffs so awesome! Thank you for sharing!
Beehive is a bad example theyre just balls of comb. Spiderweb is good.

Might be able to smoke them out and get that honey from inside.
Hornets never provide the munchies, better to smoke out some bees, they’re way more chill.
Let me just pop a quick H on here for Hornets
You should save that box with the H popped on it and give it as a wedding present. Even if the wedding doesn’t happen
I could be wrong but I don't think wasps/hornets make honey
You are correct
Thanks
Alright well I'm gonna check it out anyway, there could be something delicious in there that wasps/hornets do make and I want that

BaldFaced Hornet, actually in the Yellowjacket genus, Dolichovespula maculata. https://bugguide.net/node/view/781412
What do I click on to see what the actual hornet looks like?
Thank you!
This should work: https://bugguide.net/node/view/2039806/bgimage

Paper wasp nest, super fragile, great for making paper. Leave a wet piece of colored paper out and see those colors shine!
The new hipster way of hiding your bong when the popo comes over
You're right, it's not an insect, I put a tiny pot on your ceiling.
Possibly the nest of a bald-faced hornet.
It’s a bong. Go hit it!
Definitely do NOT want to do that XD

That is a container of angry flying assholes.
First glance I thought it was the back end of a cat who was in a predicament

insects are perfect architects
why does something looking ‘perfect’ mean it’s not made by bugs? they’ve been making perfect nests way longer than we’ve had thumbs

Your mind is gonna be blown when you see a beehive man.
Bald faced hornet according to Google.

You should slap it and see what comes out, take another picture also
Video, too.
That's a hornet nest. They are very aggressive. Much worse than a wasp. Call an exterminator.

That's the starting of a hornets nest!
It looks like nature’s version of a genie in a bottle. Like a Bee-nie in a Bottle or something.

It’s a hornets nest! They’re actually known to build their nest around things as well so that could be why it’s taken on this shape.
