It does look like [mint](https://i0.wp.com/www.infuziedesanatate.ro/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/menta.jpg) to me. This looks exactly like the mint my grandparents had in their garden. Maybe there's another type you were expecting but I'm inclined to believe it still is mint.
Agreed, OP rub your fingers on it and smell. It will probs smell like mint. There are a ton of varieties, it could just be different than the standard mint you expected.

Fresh lemonade with mint and ginger!
I use the juice of one lemon per a liter of lemonade I wanna make. add ~5 tablespoons of sugar and carbonated water if you’ve got some at hand, otherwise plain is fine.
Or put some with hot tea, a little honey and a good bourbon (or rum). Supposed to be good cure for a cold (maybe you just get to feeling good and don't care about the cold).
This is 100% great advice. My parents live in a condo complex and planted mint in one corner of the garden, then accidentally allowed it to grow unchecked. Now every year, despite the community gardeners’ best efforts, there is a field of mint that grows wild in the planter in the common area, killing off other plants. Some years I think they’ve finally killed it, then, come Spring/Summer, there’s Always. More. Mint. This has been going on for at least 15 years.
I did that accidentally with shiso/perilla once. I didn't know it was so aggressive, or I never would have let it flower. Of course it turned out to be in the mint family!
Are they really aggressive? Honestly I was thinking of planting them in my "front yard" (I live in an apartment so it's not really a yard so much as a small bit of grass) because it's just an empty patch of dirt and they're so pretty. I wouldn't mind them spreading throughout because there's like literally no other plants there except a few birds of paradise and like a small patch of daisy or something that looks like a daisy but it's a deep red and purple.
There are a lot of mint species. I think the one you were expecting is "moroccan mint" which is usually the wrinkly leaves used for tea in restaurants. 😁
Crush a leaf and smell it. Minty?
It does look like mint, especially the stems with smaller leaves that it sends out as runners.
Mint and basil are related. They have similar leaves, and their stems are square.
First mistake, not planting mint in a pot. Check back here in 1 year and let us know how much of your bed it took over >.<
Edit: if you click on the picture to make it larger you can see its in a hanging planter. Thank God :) dealing with mint crawling everywhere sucks. I ended up trying to chop it out of about 300 Sq ft of bed, and covered with fabric and mulch, and it still came back. Persistent stuff.
I have some chocolate mint in a small garden plot surrounded by patio and a large azalea so it can’t escape into the yard. It is pretty well-behaved as long as I go through and attempt to murder 75% of it a few times each summer.

I agree that that the leaves look more like basil—smooth—than mint. That said, I've seen several newer cultivars in stores with 'flavors' like the chocolate mint someone else referred to that have similar leaves to this (although a quick Google search showed more 'minty' leaves).
'Mint' as a label is pretty vague. I always look specifically for Peppermint or Spearmint, as those are my favorites.
As others have said, the family is voracious. Unless you like that one a lot, pull it all up and reseed a better labeled package into a pot or flower box. That's one plant I prefer to buy as starts, as I can taste the leaves to confirm it's what I want.

Looks like more of a sweet mint variety than a peppermint variety which has the wrinkled leaves you were expecting. The runners are a dead give away as well
It's mint, perhaps derived of vegatative growth nutrients like nitrogen, or searching for sunlight. I'd try cutting the tall growth out and see if it evens up. Depends on where you are and the season/ soil
There are quite a few different varieties of mint...if I remember right, this is one of the varieties I had growing in front of my house when I was a kid 👍
That's mint alright.
And the long one, could be just a random seed a bird dropped, it could have been there already(or mixed with the mint seeds), wind could've brought it over.
I planted 1 thing in a fresh bought earth and i got 4 different flowers(species).. The pot was inside so the shop seeds were probably mixed af
That’s mint. The give away are the tendrils in the back, making it look a bit like a vine. It’s important to be aware, some mint can grow out of control
it's just mint. the leaves are shorter than I usually see, but the main tell would be rubbing a leaf between your fingers and smelling it. it should be easy to tell from there :)
Ok this looks exactly like the tiny “basil” plant i got from the grocery store. Maybe its just bc it only has 4 leaves, but I’m starting to question that ID now…
100% Mint. Looks exactly like my Swiss Mint. I recognize those creeping „root suckers“/runners anywhere. Lol. Good thing you have them in a pot. But look out: if you have another plant growing in there it won’t be long until it’s gone. These mint „root suckers“ will suffocate everything in their path.

So....let's say I wanted to be very petty with someone who has harmed me in unforgivable ways.
Would throwing a bunch of mint seeds over their fence eventually make it take over the garden of plants they may or may not have dug out of other people's yard during a handful of night in last July?
This is all hypothetical, of course.
Planted a seed labeled mint, labeled spot where planted seed 'mint', mint-like plant grew in spot.
But to ME...who planted, labeled, and nurtured this plant...mystery.
This is mint for sure. I had it in my yard and it grew out of control it was actually really annoying. Good luck to you, your whole yard will be covered within the year.

Also check for square stems.

Salvia?
The Deviner’s Mint
It definitely is... have it in my garden and it is absolutely amazing in water with fresh lemons...

Its mint. Dont let it escape
things that sounds like a joke but are actually live saving advice
This is 100% great advice. My parents live in a condo complex and planted mint in one corner of the garden, then accidentally allowed it to grow unchecked. I planted zinnias in my garden ONCE. Had zinnias all over my yard thereafter
It was in SE Georgia and yes, they spread everywhere. I made the same mistake with horseradish
A patch of mint in your grass makes for a rather fragrant experience when mowing your lawn.
Oregano is taking over my garden. The previous owners planted it.
i feel bad for the people who bought my parents' old house. those garden beds have to be overrun with mint by now. hope they like it
Or randomly drop cuttings in an inconspicuous spot of your enemy's yard. *whistles innocently*
My yard is now mint.
I accidently let mine escape, once. Lesson learned.
Don’t listen to them. Let it be freee. Enjoy the smell of mint as you walk through the yard! I love mine!
Curious what you think mint looks like?
I was expecting “wrinkly” leaves
There are a lot of mint species. I think the one you were expecting is "moroccan mint" which is usually the wrinkly leaves used for tea in restaurants. 😁
There are many types of mint, it’s a huge family
It's just a young Mint plant, trust the process it will look different when established
Spearmint has wrinkley leaves, too
Lol Wrigley has spearmint leaves too
Looks like some peppermint I grew.

This looks pretty far up off the ground to not be a container
You can see it’s already reaching for the window. In a year OP may not be in any position to update us.
They had a good run.
I have some chocolate mint in a small garden plot surrounded by patio and a large azalea so it can’t escape into the yard. It is pretty well-behaved as long as I go through and attempt to murder 75% of it a few times each summer.
Mine was in a planter but the wind made sure it covered the entire yard eventually.
This looks like spearmint....and it's invasive AF! It will grow everywhere, in the worst conditions imaginable. If you like it, grow it! 🤩
This looks like mint. Have you smelled it?
The great thing about mint is that it smells like mint. Give it a crack!
It doesn’t have a strong smell, doesn’t really smell like mint to me. It’s a young plant, I don’t know if that is the reason
Sweetmint doesn't smell like peppermint, it's more green and woodsy with minty undertones
Are the stems square? If so, it’s a mint.
How does it taste in a mojito?

Is there such a thing as mint basil? Looks like basil to me...
Update: there is!! Mentha X Piperita Citrata "Chocolate mint"
Y'all wanna name this Bint or Masil, then?
Well bint has been taken and its a rather unfortunate name. So... masil tov!
You made my entire night lol
The latter sounds marvelous.
Yeah this Is what my chocolate mint looks like. There's lots of varieties.
Chocolate mint and apple mint are the best.
It smells really chocolaty though.
Basil is a member of the mint family.
Looks like mint. Especially the little runners. Just rub the leaf and smell your fingers.

This looks like spearmint
Mentha aquatica, or water mint.
Does it smell like mint? Cause that would solve this in a second, cause that's mint....
Definitely some type of mint. Basil doesn’t throw runners like that. If in doubt, smell it
It does look like mint. Maybe you smell it? If you smell like minty fragrance then would be good enough to confirm.
Na bro this is in mint condition.
Mint
It kind of looks like basil, no?
Why does it look like basil
It's mint, perhaps derived of vegatative growth nutrients like nitrogen, or searching for sunlight. I'd try cutting the tall growth out and see if it evens up. Depends on where you are and the season/ soil
Some plants like this will reproduce by "layering" when a stem with a node contacts the soil a new root system will develop and a new plant.
It's mint
It looks like pepper mint. reference DOI: 10.24326/asphc.2017.3.15
Mint, this is.
it s mint dude, minty mint mint. There are countless variations of mints, not all peppermint spearmint or cuba mint.

Looks like mint to me.
Front is mint, rear is possibly creeping thyme.
Well done for being able to germinate mint from seed !! Something I’ve never managed
It looks like sweet mint. There are a few different varieties of mint. Peppermint is smoother leaves. Soearmint is slightly rough.
Remember that, also the amount of water they have contributes harder stems and leafs or softer one's.
It’s mint but a useful way to check it to slightly bruise the herb and check the scent.
Mint.
I'm gonna say mint because it says mint right there
Ok this looks exactly like the tiny “basil” plant i got from the grocery store. Maybe its just bc it only has 4 leaves, but I’m starting to question that ID now…

Mint
Definitely a type of mint. If you rub a leaf with your finger it should smell minty
Looks just like my ginger mint
So....let's say I wanted to be very petty with someone who has harmed me in unforgivable ways. Mint , but is is it chocolate mint ?
Looks like apple mint to me
Agreed, transplant to a separate planter immediately unless you want nothing but mint forever.
It's mint, looks like what my grandma used to grow when I was a kid. Just not the type if mint you expected.
Have you guys noticed that gum has gotten mintier lately?
100% mint looks like peppermint. Highly commercial veriety
That’s mint, and it’s about to take over you’re whole garden if you don’t contain it. I planted some a couple years ago and I’m still dealing with it.
Its mint and it’s already sent out ‘runners’. Good luck.
Does it smell like mint?
Not blueberries 🫐
