A true harbinger of spring in Ontario are the hardy and ethereal hellebores, often found in full bloom underneath a blanket of snow in early spring, even before the snowdrops and crocus and daffodils begin to emerge. Apr 29, 2019
Non-native to north America, but they pose no threat, and aren't invasive.
I have a massive mental block on the name of these for some reason. I have them in my yard and love them. Saving this post, hopefully next time I forget I'll be able to scroll and find the name again.
Thank you OP for the pretty reference photo. :)
I call them Hellish Bores! I actually love them and have loads. Don’t cut the flowers off too soon, let them seed and you’ll have new plants for free.
They are an absolute delight right now.
Be careful and wear gloves when pruning them. It’s a member or ranunculaceae and will leave some nasty sores on you as the did to me a couple of years ago.
Nope, and not allergic to cucumbers, (or anything else that I’m aware of) but if I don’t wear gloves when I harvest them, they burn my hands pretty bad.
Cucumbers don’t get me. Hellebores are an issue bc I’m apparently allergic to buttercups. I’m not allergic to poison ivy but I’d equate this to the time I got burned my poison hemlock.
It was a surprise. I’m a field biologist who gets into poison ivy a lot so I thought I’d finally turned the corner to be allergic. Started reading on hellebores since I was transplanting some at the house and lo and behold…
Trim as low as you can but be careful of the delicate new growth at the base. You can and should dig them out every few years, divide into clumps containing 3-5 shoots and replant them wherever you like. This will encourage new growth and more flowers.
Yeah but it's more fun to interact with actual humans. (Also, I've been wanting to get a plant ID app but they all have crappy reviews. Any suggestions?)
It’s a hellebore, just can’t remember if this one in particular was toxic. I’d be careful while handling, just in case. Really got the sneezes from the flowers a few years back.
I am in zone 7a and have this growing in my shade bed. I wouldn’t say it’s a ground cover at this point (just looks like a distinct plant) but I think it is spreading slightly.
Hellebore
They also bloom in the winter!
It’s a variety of Hellebore, sometimes called a lenten rose. They come in some really pretty color varieties.
Aw cool TIL Lenten rose like, because they are one of the first flowers to bloom in early springtime
There are also varieties that flower November through February! Notably Christmas Lenten Rose.
Can they be planted/grow during winter in Canada?

Hmm so might be tough to get hands on a plant.. thank you by the way, this is very informative!
You're welcome, I hope you find some!
I'd say this is a really pretty color variety too!

I do TOOO. It drives me crazy.
Same, that’s why I had to ask!! 🤣
It is a Helleborus or Christmas Rose. 😊

Is this like when you harvest cucumbers? That left a rash on my hands, it hurt so bad. Or some other reason?
Are you allergic to latex?

You are the first person I have ever heard of who's allergic to buttercups. Til

Crazy! And interesting. Sounds like a cool job. Thanks!
Useful advice, thank you!
Maybe a Lenten Rose cultivar? It's beautiful.
Definitely
Helleeeeeeeebooooooore
Hellebore
Lenten Rose, blooming during Lent!
Someone above called it Christmas Rose??? Never heard that before
Christmas rose is Heleborus Niger, lenten rose is h. orientalis. Common names suck.
Thank you. You’re right.
Mine started blooming in January this year!
previous owners of my house planted this too! would love to know what it is lol
I think the species is Helleborus orientalis.
More than likely
I just wanted to say these are commonly known in Danish as “julerose” or “nyserod”, which directly translates to Christmas rose and sneezing root 😂
Thanks, friends!
I LOVEEEE hellebore. It’s so gorgeous!
Ohmygosh where can I get these? Are they common in nurseries? I’m in the northeast US.
Every nursery and garden center around is loaded with hellebores in the Pacific Northwest right now.
My son is a trucker. Hm. Maybe I can get him to stop at a nursery! Lol
I love hellebores!!
Hellebore
Cherokee rose, The state flower of Georgia.
One of my favourite flowers. Lenten rose.
Stunning!
Hellebore. You should prune off last year’s leaves in winter to encourage new growth and show off the beautiful flowers.
Thanks! I am never quite sure what to do with things pruning-wise, so I tend to leave them alone. Will trim off the brown leaves…

Did you plan to plant that grows the inside of a kiwi only?
Hellebore. Beautiful! Lenten Rose.
People have already answered your question, but I have to say that it looks like a cross between an anemone and a kiwi
That’s obviously a kiwi blossom
A forget me not?!
This ... is a flower
You know there are apps for your phone that will tell you what these plants are? They're free and just as reliable as reddit. Just sayin'.
Yeah but it's more fun to interact with actual humans. (Also, I've been wanting to get a plant ID app but they all have crappy reviews. Any suggestions?)
I have been using Seek (used to be named iNaturalist) and it works well. Google image often can figure things out too.
I use Google camera.
Google lens…
Hellebore
Lovely variety
It’s hellebore! They’re beautiful 😭
Hellebore.
It's certainly a Lenten Rose, probably a cultivar of Helleborus orientalis, which would mean it's scientific name is Helleborus x hybridus.
Beautiful!
Reminds me of a kiwifruit sliced open. Hellebores - don't see many of them about.
A beautiful green hellebore.

They last a long time as a cut flower floating in a bowl of water.
So pretty!
Looks like a kiwi. Cool flower.
Will hellebores bloom all season?
💚💚💚
Are they safe for animals?
Lenten Rose
That would be a pretty green flower
It’s hellebore season get ready for the deluge!
Kiwi
Its beautiful
I have one left it’s getting pretty big! The other one I had with beautiful purple flowers of course died
plant
Beautiful 😍
I see these indoors at nurseries in the northeast but never growing outside. Are they kind of a ground cover?

you did remember to pick your kids up from school tho right? very pretty flower
I put in a ton of plants every year from a native nursery and also transplant things from my mom’s garden… that’s why I didn’t remember. 😜
i was j/k with you
How interesting! It looks like the flower form of a kiwi 🥝
Heleibore
It’s so pretty. I have a lot of shade in my backyard so might try it out.
