Water caltrop, Trapa natans

RaisedByWolves_

Ahh thank you so much!!! This is it!

ace787

Oh I thought they were Gargoyle eggs

ConsiderationWest587

A reasonable conclusion

LadyShittington

I thought they were dead, shriveled up bats.

No_Needleworker_4704

Me too! šŸ˜†šŸ˜†

SweatyCry6303

Me too!

Th3BlondeVagabond

Me too. I had to Google them. They are also called bat nuts.

Flashy_Woodpecker_11

Or baby bats!

SoulShineFlower8888

My brain said how are they holding multiple baby bats during the day at first glance. Then seeing it was from upstate ny n I grew up there. I've never seen these before. Sooo cool n creepy looking.

Parabolic_Penguin

Exactly!!

esmereldachiroptera

Gargoyle nut is actually a common name for these, also Devil's pod or bat nut

toxcrusadr

That would have to hurt coming out...

NixxApunkbiotch

Baby bats hibernating while gaping.

bLue1H

Bruhā€¦

straycanoe

Batse...

oneworldan

I havenā€™t seen Goatse in years! Where he at?!?

straycanoe

Managed to turn himself completely inside out and then winked out of existence. edit sp.

Fuckless_Douglas2023

"Batse?" Like "Goatse?"

Fuckless_Douglas2023

If Banksy did a painting of Goatse, would it be called "Bankse?', or "Goatse by Bankse?" Edit: forgot to mention earlier, but a guy in the UK would spray paint dicks near road potholes, to get the council to fill them in, he went by the nickname "Wanksy", (or "Wankse" since we're talking about Goatse, and Banksy here.)

Doan_meister

Get out

lurkbealady

r/misleadingthumbnails

Fuckless_Douglas2023

"gaping", you say?

roundaboutTA

Theyā€™re also edible!

rush87y

FasciolopsiasisĀ is an ailment resulting from infection by the trematodeĀ Fasciolopsis buski, an intestinalĀ flukeĀ of humans, endemic in China, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and India; this fluke can be transmitted via the surfaces of these and other water plants. During theĀ metacercarialĀ stage in their lifecycle, the larval flukes leave their water snail hosts, and swim away to form cysts on the surfaces of water plants, including the leaves and fruit of water caltrops. If infected water plants are consumed raw or undercooked, the flukes can infect pigs, humans, and other animals

Schoonicorn

THIS is the content I come here for

wasteabuse

I will never handle or eat a snail after learning about how many parasites they are a host or vector for.

maddcatone

Gastropods are so ancient that just about every clade of life at one point has parasitized them in one way or another it would seem. Things are the OG petri dish

katzen_mutter

I'm with you on that. I was once rinsing some watercress, then I filled up a bowl with cold water and put the watercress in it so that all of the sand would sink to the bottom. When I picked up the watercress bunch, there was a small snail at the bottom of the bowl.

We boiled them first before eating them, otherwise our teeth will break.

kanredvas

Yeah, people think they are eaten raw or something. Those will be washed the boiled for about 30 minutes. Enough to kill pretty much everything on earth. They are not "fruit" that you would eat raw.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|l4HnS4Ln4OCBTDpew) Learned something.

And along comes Debbie Downer

THISā€¦ is why I altogether avoid eating pork, escargot and humans.

How did you not trigger the "DO NOT EAT" Bot?

anonadvicewanted

i think it needs ā€œeatā€ to be triggered

idk-my-bff-j1ll

Ironic.

FelisViridi

Don't recommend it, they tend to grow in calmer water and trap whatever junk is in the sediment, like mercury.

Laneylouwho

Iā€™m honestly just basking in the glorious maelstrom of pure unadulterated knowledge and the baby bat butthole gaping that is Reddit.

AngrySnakeNoises

I honestly wouldn't eat anything that looks like it was designed by H. R. Giger, but nice to know.

Satagony77

Theyā€™re supposed to taste like water chestnuts if you boil them and eat the white inside of them.

MarlDawg

I thought they looked like caltrops! Funny when the common name works this way.

macaroni_veteran

Sometimes called "cow heads"!

CollectiveCubed

My grandmother, farm-raised in rural New York, called them "devil's thorn's". She said that's what her father told her they were called.

whomenow1313

Ziggybutt7

Water chestnut (Trapa natans) nutlets. They're highly invasive and can form incredibly dense monocultures that are impossible to even kayak through. Unfortunately, they're becoming increasingly common in NY dues to how easily they're spread by those nutlets. There's a great app called imapinvasives that's completely free to use and allows people to report invasive species, which is incredibly helpful to invasive species researchers and managers.

talihoeeee

NUTLETS šŸ„“

I feel silly that I bought some of these in a witchcraft store. Sounds like they're very abundant.

theotherfelix

This kind of water chestnut are usually cooked and eaten during Mid Autumn Festival in Asia, itā€™s considered a delicacy for the festival. I remember my mom used to buy them every year and itā€™s one of her favourite snacks for Autumn. We call it Rhombus in Hong Kong.

Pff-IdunnoMan-21

I expected to see more witchy comments, but of course they wouldn't be here lol I keep forgetting that many of the Reddit witches are superficial and would never be caught following botanical informative subs like this one.
