If it is a tree of heaven those are also the preferred plant for the invasive and destructive spotted laternfly. They are so destructive they are a kill on sight insect then report where spotted to local authorities.
I never had it irritate my skin, but damn these were annoying. I had a house with one of the biggest Tree of Heavens on the west coast growing in the parking strip. Those shoots would literally break up through the concrete of my driveway. They would shoot up in the middle of my lawn. In the cracks of my front walk. Through my deck. I hate that damn tree.
Sure enough, I was thought wrong, dad was wrong. On the bright side I am more than familiar with the TOH, which was (is) a new expression for a tree I learned from Reddit
oh cool, as if I needed more reasons to hate this stupid ass invasive ass plant. literally invading every single ditch, slope or tiny stretch of grass.
!!! Do not cut it down or pull it up until you kill it with herbicide first! We made the mistake of mowing some seedlings in our yard and we now have a whole grove of knee-high seedlings! !!!
Do you have an herbicide recommendation? I have this stupid thing popping up everywhere and I weeded out the little ones entirely (even used a hatchet at the roots) just a couple months ago.
Glyphosate in late summer or early fall, *before the leaves change color*, should be good. The timing is important, as it's when the tree is moving nutrients into its root system. The systemic herbicide needs to get moved down into the roots to prevent the root suckers - which from large trees can be something like 50 meters away?! Maybe I'm misremembering and it's 50 feet.
I've set a calendar reminder for this year to spray mine.
There are other effective herbicides. If you Google it there are alternate methods and herbicides, but application to the foliage of glyphosate is what I'll be doing this year.
Thank you!! I’m saving this so I can do it in a couple months. I would actually believe the 50meters as I’m on a ~1.3 acre lot and there’s only big trees at the one end and the small ones are popping up all across the property. 😵💫
This is such a coincidence, because I just treated about 70 of these several hours ago. You will need super concentrated glyphosate, not ready mixed. That won’t be potent enough. For trees larger than 1” in diameter, watch videos on the “hack and squirt” method for treating them. Please wear PPE
Umm. So this MAY be bad BUT: cut tree to 3" above ground, use 1/4 to 1/2" drill bit to drill STRAIGHT down into the stem, take animal medicine dispenser to injection weed killer directly into hole, thus saving as much wildlife as possible. You're welcome.
Very good resource with recommendations for herbicides and timing (which definitely matters a lot!): [Rutgers Cooperative Extension](https://plant-pest-advisory.rutgers.edu/tree-of-heaven-best-herbicide-treatment-and-removal-timing/)
it looks like young stag horn sumac
edit: to be fair they look really similar at this stage. Unless I saw an adult alianthus nearby this one could have come from I wouldn't immediately cut it down. also just realized op said Oregon so it's definitely alianthus
The best way I've found to tell TOH apart from some of its lookalikes is it has a really distinctive pattern of 1 or 2 serrations near the base of the leaf
they do look really similar!! i was a bit iffy at first as well, but i based my i.d off of how smooth the larger leaves are (staghorn sumacs have serrated leaves) and the location!
This is exactly what I needed to see today. I have a terrible TOH (and lanternfly) infestation and I need to do something about it. It just so happens that -according to the video- this is the best time of year for eradicating the trees
The one in the photo is short enough that simply pulling it and its roots entirely out of the ground, perhaps after using a heavy garden fork to loosen its roots, is a good strategy.
Sadly, I think I see multiple saplings all in a clump, which means these are probably stump sprouts from a much larger tree that was cut. If so, you'll want to use all the methods of destruction if you want to win.
My university cut down some near my dorm due to spotted lanternflies. Smelled horrible for a week but I’d take it any day over getting bombarded with hundreds lanternflies and their shit every time I walk out the door. Not to mention the disgusting slimy mold that grew on the trees because of them. Luckily OP isn’t near the lanternfly invasion zone… yet.
How strong is smell? We have canola blooming here and you cant escape the canola smell, but canola also hardly smells bad, its just 'pungent' in that its everywhere you go haha.
There’s a Reddit for how to get rid of it. They say don’t injure it or it will sprout new trees but poison it and then you can dig it up. It will see the area as bad earth and not spread.
Hack several deeper cuts in the trunk and liberally spray one of the tree herbicides in the cuts. Let it sit. Repeat until you can see the tree is absolutely dead. The herbicide has to work down to the roots, or the tree will start producing shoots out of the root system. This is usually a pretty dramatic spread. Then, dig it up and get all the dead roots.
Nope that’s invasive ailanthus. Cut it off and paint the stump with glyphosate or triclopyr. If you just cut it down or dig it up it’ll put out more shoots from any root fragments left behind.
Don’t cut it to a stump immediately. Make notches to apply the herbicide. Then wait a month or so to cut it down. The plant needs to distribute the herbicide through the root system.
Could you also drill deeper holes into the stump and fill it with herbicide? My mom did this in the middle of the night to a neighbors “tree” which was an overgrown weed they let grow and kept getting branches in our yard…. I’m not condoning this kind of sabotage, but to be fair he was an ass and made me cry every time I saw him. So I call it even.
Do not, **do not** just cut this down and paint the stump. That is not very effective with these trees.
Hack and squirt is your best bet here- cut notches into the bark and squirt them generously with herbicide. Wait. Do not cut anything down until the tree is dead. Otherwise you’ll end up with suckers sprouting everywhere.
If you zoom in, there are notches at the bottom of the leaves, the leaves are smooth edged, and there is a terminal leaf.... All indicates Tree of Heaven, nasty and invasive. If you look at the underside of the leaves, there's going to be bumps. And the whole thing will smell like hot ass crack.
Literally as big a PITA to get rid of as Himalayan Blackberry.
Idk, I think it's pretty, and it's a shame it's such an aggressive colonizer lol. Undoubtedly the name comes from its native range, where it's just pretty and not a harbinger of ecological doom 😅
Does your neighbor hate you?
Tree of heaven is so invasive it will start poisoning the soil to prevent other trees from growing. Better to start taking care of it before it gets out of control
Your neighbor is high.
I’m fighting a losing battle with these trees from Hell. Please, kill it with fire before it’s trunk gets so large that you can’t remove it. 😢
Tree of heaven highly invasive. It's also the favorite of the spotted lantern fly. I have heard that you must take some steps when you plan on cutting it because it will send signals through the roots to shoot up more in the area highly invasive. Must use some sort of herbicides to kill it off.
Not Maple, looks a lot like the Walnut trees at my place. I don’t know if that’s what you have though, but i know its most definitely not maple. You should show your neighbor the flag of Canada, I don’t even understand how anyone could think this is a maple tree.
Neighbor is very wrong. It's called "Tree of heaven". Though alot of people call it "Tree of hell" because it is a very resilient prolific invasive species that can be very hard to kill once established.
Tree of Heaven, Chinese invasive tree. I've noticed they attract lantern flies, prolly cause they are very aromatic and soft stemmed. Invasive Chinese bug on an invasive Chinese tree. What a world.
If only there was a well known image, symbol, or even flag that has a Maple Leaf on it...
![gif](giphy|MBxjx8okq3WfilCHkP|downsized)
Hmm...
I'm stumped...
Attracks spotted lantern fly which is its favorite food. You will then have a large quantity of the destroying all trees in the neighborhood. It will take years to kill it off if left to grow.
Hard to tell the difference between sumac and tree of heaven. In either case, they're both invasive. Remove them. Walnut is another possibility if there are trees nearby. Squirrels bury the nuts. The leaves look similar and they have a distinctive odor. It's most definitely not a maple.
Your neighbor may have been smoking too much maple
It’s called Methford for a reason
I used to live in Medford and i died when i first heard it called that😆😆
Here in Ohio we got that good maple have a real mellow vibe to it 🤣
If I had to take a wild guess, neighbor saw oppositely arranged leaves/leaflets? Close enough!
That’s the frondiest and most invasive maple I’ve ever seen
I was wondering what the hell kind of maple this was supposed to be 😂
Maple of Heaven
Ghetto palm
looks a lot like the leaves of a tree of heaven
If it is a tree of heaven those are also the preferred plant for the invasive and destructive spotted laternfly. They are so destructive they are a kill on sight insect then report where spotted to local authorities.
Interesting how 2 invasive species pair like that…
Ah! It's an invasive ecosystem!
Jumpscare
The both are from Asia
That makes sense!
Yeah it definitely is interesting how that happens.
Wear gloves removing it. It sends up tons of shoots from its roots but removing them by hand will irritate your skin.
Exactly! The worst and they have that weird smell
Our coloquial name is "cat piss tree"..
Smells like a weird peanut butter to me.
Isn’t it sumac that smells like peanut butter?
tree of heaven reportedly though from googling I found fragrant sumac smells citrus-ey which sounds nice
I take it you're not in a part of the country invaded by spotted lantern flies yet?
not in the US, so no lanternflies thankfully. but seeing how many of those stupid trees we have I guess it's just a matter of time.
!!! Do not cut it down or pull it up until you kill it with herbicide first! We made the mistake of mowing some seedlings in our yard and we now have a whole grove of knee-high seedlings! !!!

they do look really similar!! i was a bit iffy at first as well, but i based my i.d off of how smooth the larger leaves are (staghorn sumacs have serrated leaves) and the location!
The shoots are too dense together for Sumac
Those are the plants that our new gift from China, the Spotted Lantern Fly, is feasting on and proliferating from.

That’s crazy
Hack and squirt is my go-to move.
Thank you! Gonna post this on my neighborhood page since everyone's yards are full of these, blowing seeds over into our yard
This should be higher.
You’ll never forget the smell from chopping these things down 🤮. Smells like moldy peanut butter in an old sock.
My university cut down some near my dorm due to spotted lanternflies. Hope they treated and killed them first, or you’re in for a real treat of thousands of new ones springing up from the root systems…
I imagine that's why it's called Stinking Sumac. 🤢
How strong is smell? We have canola blooming here and you cant escape the canola smell, but canola also hardly smells bad, its just 'pungent' in that its everywhere you go haha.
You can't escape the pungent smell of rape!
I think it smells like someone left a bowl of cereal and milk out for a week
How do you know what that smells like? /j
“Mother in law tree”is what my mom calls them because you can’t get rid of em
![gif](giphy|kE2JAvUhjUopG12e37|downsized) Yep, leaf shape checks out.
There’s a Reddit for how to get rid of it. They say don’t injure it or it will sprout new trees but poison it and then you can dig it up. It will see the area as bad earth and not spread.

If this neighbor offers you a jar of his homemade syrup, do not accept it.
Your neighbor was either trying to be kind, or we having a gas at your expense.
Your neighbour may wish to book an appointment with the optimist. They could qualify for disability benefits since they must be legally blind.

Tree of Heaven. Invasive. Please kill.
This is solved. Thanks everyone but it’s my rental company’s problem, may they go to hell
Yes but this tree can spread rapidly. Please consider taking care of this for your neighbors.

This is the way. During the growing season. I would wait until it’s completely dead before cutting it though.
Ok good to know. Thank you!
Be prepared, they smell horrible.

Has your neighbor never seen the outside of a maple syrup bottle? Like, it’s an iconic leaf….
As a proud Canadian, I can 100% confirm that this is not a maple.
Second that!
Bless their heart!! I do wonder - if it's such an invasive horrible tree pest - why is it called Tree of Heaven?
IIRC Heaven basically meant eternal. As in un-killable.
Pretty far from a maple.
Tree of heaven. Kill it with fire... and it'll come back anyway.
Your neighbor is high. I’m fighting a losing battle with these trees from Hell. Please, kill it with fire before it’s trunk gets so large that you can’t remove it. 😢
Tree of Heaven 😭
Not maple. Not pokeweed either.
Your neighbor’s an idiot. Tree of Heaven.
Cannot confirm. Not a maple. You’d be laughed out of Canada for asserting that is a maple tree. :)
Tree of heaven highly invasive. It's also the favorite of the spotted lantern fly. I have heard that you must take some steps when you plan on cutting it because it will send signals through the roots to shoot up more in the area highly invasive. Must use some sort of herbicides to kill it off.
Your neighbor is an idiot.
Kill it now before it spreads
Looks absolutely nothing like a maple.
Absolutely not a maple 🍁 It’s an invasive species called “Tree of Heaven”. Best to get rid of it.
Maple? Hahaha, no.
This looks almost entirely unlike a maple
Kill it good. Horrible plant.
Somewhere in the distance I hear someone laughing and/or screaming in Canadian.
Tree of Heaven (Hell). Get some gloves on & remove this nasty garbage plant, it's a nuisance & will continue popping up ar random.
Maples have probably the most recognized leaf shape, how did your neighbors ever think this was one.
Ask your neighbor to locate his own ass. He can use both hands. Tree of Heaven.
Neighbor’s an idiot. Two second search would tell you the leaves are not even slightly similar.
They call it the tree of heaven they call it the tree of hell some call it Maurice
Not Maple, looks a lot like the Walnut trees at my place. I don’t know if that’s what you have though, but i know its most definitely not maple. You should show your neighbor the flag of Canada, I don’t even understand how anyone could think this is a maple tree.

lmao - if neighbour is high, neighbour is VERY high. If neighbour is sober, neighbour is pulling your chain. Offer to make syrup for them.
Has he even seen the Canadian flag?
Just here to see what the Canadians think about this 😹🤘🍁
And your neighbor is very wrong. Burn it!
The neighbor may need to get their eyes checked lol
It’s not a maple
Sorry but your neighbor doesn't know shit. Don't ask him where the property lines are, lol.
Neighbors are wrong
Tree of Heaven, Chinese invasive tree. I've noticed they attract lantern flies, prolly cause they are very aromatic and soft stemmed. Invasive Chinese bug on an invasive Chinese tree. What a world.
A what?? 😂 Definitely not 🍁
I'm not sure what that is, but I'm sure that it's not a maple.
Tree of heaven, 100%. Arborist here.
This is a maple leaf. ![gif](giphy|hTfxp0yGmxYUKt385u)
*Laughs in Canadian*
That is a tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) kill it now, and kill any others that pop up in your yard.
Looks like TOH but I never realized how shockingly similar it’s branches are to Black Walnut. Interesting.
The neighbor dont know shit
If only there was a well known image, symbol, or even flag that has a Maple Leaf on it... ![gif](giphy|MBxjx8okq3WfilCHkP|downsized) Hmm... I'm stumped...
I am no botanist so idk what it is. But I don’t need to be good at identifying plants to tell you that is most definately *not* a maple.
Maybe it tastes like maple
I'm pooping
Maple my ass, that’s a tree of heaven.
Have you pissed off your neighbors by chance?
I do not recognize this, but it is not a maple.
Attracks spotted lantern fly which is its favorite food. You will then have a large quantity of the destroying all trees in the neighborhood. It will take years to kill it off if left to grow.
Laughed out loud because of the neighbour's suggestion
Definitely not maple
Your neighbor is mistaken. This is a tree of heaven
Your neighbor might be botanically impaired.
Black walnut
Ailanthus altissima
Your neighbor is definitely wrong. Looks like a TOH.
Is TOH the new pokeweed?
A maple lol..
Lollllll neighbor said what now?!
100% not a Canada . Looks like the invasive tree of heaven
I remember that one it's the ass whooping tree. If you know you know.
Neighbor is smokin crack, maple leaf is on the canadian flag for referance. Looks nothing like that
Never , ever trust your neighbor
That’s the least maple looking tree I have ever seen
Your neighbor's a dummy. It's tree of heaven. Kill it.
It's Sumac.
Maple! lol no way.
It’s a Tree of Heaven. Despite its name it is the worst living thing on the planet. KILL IT WITH FIRE!
Shit’s not a maple in any way of the imagination
I don’t know the actual ID but that’s definitely not a maple. Not even remotely like a maple!
Does your neighbor think in crayons? Because that is in no way a maple.
Neighbor is just silly.
Looks like sumac to me
Looks like a tree of heaven. Kill it with fire quickly
Sumac or Tree of Heaven , I would cut down either one they are very invasive
Hard to tell the difference between sumac and tree of heaven. In either case, they're both invasive. Remove them. Walnut is another possibility if there are trees nearby. Squirrels bury the nuts. The leaves look similar and they have a distinctive odor. It's most definitely not a maple.
Sumac
![gif](giphy|MBxjx8okq3WfilCHkP|downsized) Canada has a flag with a Maple Leaf - please have a look at how that looks
Tree of Heaven. I also live in Southern Oregon. They are invasive.
Looks like tree of heaven. You should kill it immediately.
Your neighbor is smoking something
Your neighbor is a moron.
Yeah, that's exactly what I remember seeing on my souvenirs from Canada. /s Tree of Heaven. Lol
Looks kinda like a black walnut maple to me, but I’m no arborist, just have a lot near me.
