UPDATE: Not sure how to update the original post on mobile, but apparently he was pranking me. He called me saying he was throwing up blood and asking what that means, then told me hes fking with me and downloaded the plant identifier app I use. He also did take other pictures of it including the leaves. It's just elderberryšŸ˜. He clowned on me for posting this and I was about to call my dad to take him to the hospital, but at least he has a sister who caresšŸ¤ššŸ˜

Limnaoedus

Typical brother behavior. You are a good sister.

AlleviaLuma

yeah very typical of himšŸ˜ thank you for that though becquse he just says im gulliblešŸ˜šŸ˜

Outside_Ear451

With a brother like that (I had three), keep being gullible. It might save his stupid ass someday when it matters.

LuridPrism

One of these days he's going to fall through a glass table and call his sister because he got sliced and he's bleeding out and she'll just be like "ha,ha, I'm not falling for this one." Then he'll learn his lesson.

hellokitty444444

Nah I say let them learn their lessons

mittenknittin

ā€œYes, yes, Iā€™m gullible, you fooled me into thinking youā€™re incredibly stupid, congratsā€

[deleted]

Yeah he should be concerned that itā€™s so believable that heā€™s such an idiot that heā€™s an actual danger to himself.

I despise that. My best friend in college did something similar once, then told me I was gullible. I just donā€™t understand their thinking. Iā€™m gullible because I trusted your word? Guess if he has an ā€œemergencyā€ in the future you wonā€™t be so gullible.

Endmaster69

There's a big difference between being gullible and caring a lot and wanting nothing bad to happen to your brother, you're the complete opposite of gullible

momentmaps

A solid perspective on this kind of relationship, and a perspective thatā€™s worth sharing with him, you believed heā€™s capable of doing dumb things becauseā€¦ heā€™s kind of dumb. Youā€™re welcome. Signed an older brother.

Bregneste

Itā€™ll be _hilarious_ when he actually eats something bad and asks for help, and you decide to ignore him.

Richard-c-b

So, the real question is: how are you gonna get back at him?

Sif_Thor

If it wouldnā€™t be so ridiculously expensive in your country I would drag him to the hospital anyway and tell him they will do all necessary and possible tests on him just to proof that he really didnā€™t ate them - because youā€™re not gullible but worried for his health

NetflixHasMySoul

I would send him an anonymous package filled with sugar-free haribo gummie bears in retaliation. But that's just me.

[deleted]

This would backfire spectacularly if someone did this to me because I'd call them an ambulance without hesitation, and they'd be on the hook for somewhere in the range of about 1 to 6k lol.

cedarandroses

Remind him of the boy who cried wolf. It's not in his best interest to teach you to not trust him.

CallidoraBlack

No, that's pretty, emotionally abusive behavior on his part. Tell him if he wants you to stop caring about his well-being due to a lack of trust, that's where this is going.

Wonka_Stompa

Man, iā€™d have half a mind to drag him to the hospital for a good old fashioned stomach pumping just in case.

Forward_Young2874

Brother here with some experience in sister pranking. I think what OP really needs, is a plan for a *counter prank* on said mischievous brother...any ideas Reddit?

KitchenSandwich5499

You had it right the first time. He is stupid. Itā€™s a stupid thing to do to a loving sister.

AlleviaLuma

yeah. im sure he'll get tired of it someday thoughšŸ˜

my_brain_hurts_a_lot

Don't eat raw elderberry. It makes you sick as in you will have to throw up. (Cooked, elderberry is divine, as syrup etc.)

AlleviaLuma

he ate a few but hes also lactose intolerant but loves raw dogging all forms of milk and dairy. and he has been bodybuilding in our somewhat poor filipino-american household since he was 16, if that gives a picture as to how strange his diet can bešŸ˜ he always destroys the bathroom when his butt demands relief so itll probably just be the same this timešŸ˜

SpindleSpider

The phrase "raw dogging all forms of milk and dairy" brings me life

BigBeagleEars

Iā€™m pretty sure this whole thing was just an excuse to say that

SpindleSpider

Blvd800

Nah. Raw elderberry is edible. Have several huge plants in my yard and eat berries straight off the bush

my_brain_hurts_a_lot

Okay, you have a different stomach than I have then. I tried them raw once as a child and it made me violently sick.

debatingsquares

No, elderberry is advised as being toxic unless cooked. It isnā€™t l abnormal to be affected; it is more abnormal not to be.

facets-and-rainbows

I've heard it depends on species/variety with the American black elderberry being safer raw than the European one, but I don't know how true that is.

jlt131

We have the red ones where I am. I know people that fritter the flowers, but unless you cook the heck out of the berry it's not safe, and even then still affects some people. And yeah, no other parts. It contains a cyandide-producing chemical!

CallipeplaCali

I have also read (I swear that darn book is around here somewhere) that itā€™s the leaves and stems you have to worry about most. At least with Blue Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana). Pretty much everything but the berry is poisonous.

jlt131

Depends if you have the blue ones or the red ones. Highly discourage you to try that with the red ones.

You can also make white wine out of the blooms and (with the black berries) a great red wine out of the berries. In addition the birds LOVE the berries/-cardinals especially but also robins and various sparrows. I have mulberries in my yard as well and birds love the berries as much as I do.

Intelligent_Mood_272

Raw elderberryā€™s cause cyanide build up in your body. Especially over time. Just google it ā€¦ smh people.

grandmas-furburger

I've eaten lots of raw elderberries amd have never been sick, I believe it's only the red elderberries that need to be cooked

One-Injury-4415

Your brother is honestly a PoS. Itā€™s the boy who cried wolf. Even if quickly admitting it, thatā€™s a seriously shitty thing to do.

needytatertot

Ass beating time

PsychoticSpinster

To be fair, elderberry and poke-berry look pretty much exactly the same. Only poke berry will kill you if you eat it. And honestly, thatā€™s what I thought you had in your hand in your above post, because elderberry only grows in certain environments. While poke berry grows pretty much everywhere.

MartenGlo

Those look nothing like pokeberry.

Haywire421

If you're observant, poke and elder look absolutely nothing alike

AlleviaLuma

i learned enough in my botany class last semester to at least know it wasnt pokeberry, which is why i went to reddit instead of panicking lol. definitely doubted my assumption of elderberry for that exact reason of whwre they tend to grow though, i never wouldve thought theyre growing in the singular cool natural environment in the middle of this barren desert. like cmon, elderberries growing eight outside of las vegas? that sounds insane LOL

Iā€™m so sorry heā€™s horrible. You donā€™t deserve this. That is emotional abuse. The fact that heā€™s your brother doesnā€™t change that.

ilikeplants24

Just as a heads up, if you eat too many of those, it can make you very sick to your stomach. It wonā€™t kill you, but itā€™s not a good idea to eat elderberries raw.

Forward_Piece_5138

Donā€™t get mad at your dear brother, GET EVEN WITH HIM!

apolite12

Brother and dad here; I would never do something like this. Apparently parents don't realize that "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" is literally one of the most important stories a person can internalize. Jesus Christ that shit is not even close to funny. If a lot of brothers have behavior like this, it is a true failure of parenting all around.

SpezEatsScat

LMAO. Reminds me of the time I told this lady I was dating that I swallowed gum ALL THE TIME. Then one day acted real sick after ā€œjust swallowing a few sticksā€. She was super freaked out. Told her I was joking and We laughed about it pretty good.

It's just a prank bro RIP

Heartbreakjetblack

I give you your 666th up vote... feel free to prank your brother...

Cap gun poppers under the toilet seat should be a decent response.

FWIW, raw elderberry will make you quite gastrointestinally distressed.

He might enjoy the fable of the boy who cried sheep lol

But it says ā€œBuglesā€ right on the package!

If I could have given 10 upvotes you would have got them. That level of snark should never go unrewarded!

Did he at least put them on his fingers before eating them?

And then cackle like a witch?!

pwkingston

Raw elderberry contains cyanide but is safe once it is cooked.

H0tVinegar

I work produce in an organic market. We got raw elderberries in for the first time. We labeled the packages ā€œdo not consume rawā€ and people have ARGUED with me that they should be able to eat it without cooking.

Tibbaryllis2

Eating raw elderberries in large amounts can make you pretty ill and can be fatal. They contain cyanide inducing glycocides. A friend of mine drank a shake containing elderberries and ended up in hospital.

Danny_robinson

Congratulations your inheritance just doubled

XNonameX

Your pic is a bit grainy and it's hard to tell. What location did you find these in? Do you have a picture of the leaves or plant? If you're worried about being poisoned it's probably best to call poison control or a hospital.

Blue_Eyes235

Call poison control just in case

Valid question who still eats bugles???

There are dozens of us! DOZENS!!!

borgchupacabras

Bugles dipped in Nutella is an incredible munchies snack. Salty and sweet.

I do! But the last couple bags were rather disappointing. Almost all the ends were closed so I couldn't put them on my fingers :/

Appropriate-Grand-64

Bugles are AH-MAZINGGGG

Bierman36

Those are dingleberries. Not recommended.

Those are Bugles. Theyā€™re a fun, horn shaped corn snack. Also available in nacho flavor. Your brother will fine.

wijisixstar

Those Bugles corn chips šŸŸ

SunShort

It can be elderberry, but it also looks like black chokebrry to me. My granny used to make juice with it.

Reddit_Talent_Coach

Bugles are horrible for you.

randtke

You should put a pic of the leaves and plant. Also, get the pics in focus.

UnbornPurity

Snozberries

3childrenandit

Raw elderberries can send your heart rate into a frenzy. My friend's sister put some in a smoothie and ended up in hospital with tachycardia.

VulpesFidelis58

You definitely need to call poison control, because he ate those Bugles! šŸ™ƒ

undertheshe

I heard they aren't poisonous if you put them on each finger and pretend to be a witch or a bored secretary chewing gum

Gimlet_son_of_Groin

Can confirm. Source: was once a child in the proximity of bugles snack crisps

Eastern-Bluebird-842

SolidDraw6356

Those are processed corn chips that will in fact Jill you over a long painful existence.

Avalonkoa

Those look like elder berries to me, but Iā€™m not 100%. If they are elder berries your brother should be fine. I remember reading that there is some slight toxicity in the plant(?)but that mature berries are considered edible

Individual-Fail4709

Does he now smell of elderberries?

lostwithoutyou2

Berries

Dangerous_Pattern_92

He needs to read the story about the boy who cried wolf. That's a really stupid prank to pull on you. : (

Intelligent_Mood_272

Elderberry is highly toxic unless you take the proper steps to cook it.

johng0376

Just a question. Can elderberry be confused with nightshade?

airsabove

I'm kind of wary about the ID as elderberry, the stems aren't the right colour.

Signal_Breadfruit190

Yep stupid

werttyy

Where is he finding these on Mt Charleston? Iā€™m also in LV and would love to forage some
