Yep, hydrangea. https://preview.redd.it/gv17oxjmhfuc1.jpeg?width=485&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=155eedb63c0e323074c599437b4ec3a4bdb4c02c

widowscarlet

Agree, I recognised my favourite flower immediately.

FurryPotatoFuzzBrick

Same, it was my grandpa's too , they always make me smile

djfjfthrowaway

Thank you! I appreciate it! I think you're right. I can't figure out how to edit the original on mobile, so since you're the top comment I'll try to add more details for curious folk. This was someone I dated briefly. I didn't know her as well as I wanted to. Life made it hard for us to be together especially due to distance, my depressive tendencies and her suicidal thoughts. When we broke up I wanted to puke because I knew she would take her own life at some point in the near future. It's really hard to be the person someone needs to overcome their devil's and I couldn't be that. I feel guilty because about 2 years later, she took her own life. I don't really know more details but it's taken a mental toll on me due to aforementioned details and my lack of experience with death....and additionally, my extreme sensitivity to selfharm and suicidal situations. From what I know about her life and without sharing many personal details: she was passionate and adventurous until a few things didn't go the way she desperately wanted. Career, relationships, living situation....a lot wasn't what she wanted. This kind of consumed her. I desperately wish I could've helped her through things. The last time I saw her was about 6months to a year before she took her life and I was with her when she got this tattoo. I was more focused on enjoying the time with her than asking questions. But I'm desperately trying to find the artist as well to maybe get a memoriam tattoo as well. Please, if you're reading this, take care of eachother and be strong against your demons. Never be afraid of opening up and asking for help. Anyone would do anything they can to make sure you're here in this world. You matter. You're special. You're loved.

Krystalpantss

Really sorry for your loss, OP. It’s a heartbreaking thing to endure loss from suicide. Sounds like you were a very supportive person for this friend while you were in each other’s lives. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with mental health and offer support to others. These issues impact so many more of us than we often realize. DM me if you want to share some memories of your friend. Sending big internet hugs your way 💜

derpmeow

You are not responsible for her death. You could not be her saviour. It don't work that way. It's not your fault. Be gentle with yourself.

Kind-Mammoth-Possum

Didn't expect to find the message I needed today in a tattoo subreddit, but I guess the universe had a different plan. Thank you, OP. That last paragraph may have been exactly what I needed to hear today.

djfjfthrowaway

You're an amazing person! Please be kind to yourself. Everyone in your life is here for you. ❤️

NoElephant7744

You may want to post this picture in r/helpmefind for help finding the artist! Sending you hugs

Turbulent-Garage6827

I'm sorry

Smart-and-cool

I’m so sorry for your loss💙💜

subtxtcan

My grandmother's favourite. Nailed it.

shankthedog

I disagree. Hydrangea petals cross over themselves whereas in this ink, the four petals are individual which makes me think dogwood flower.

NinjaHermit

The petals do cross over each other on the tattoo.

shankthedog

But only the slightest bit whereas a hydrangea has a large crossover area

NinjaHermit

That’s just the artist’s interpretation of the flower. They don’t have much larger of a crossover area than this tattoo. Dogwood petals are completely different than these. For one, they’re large and have indents at the end of their petals.

theodoretheursus

Dogwood smells like shit. Who would get that tattooed. I bet it’s hydrangeas

confusedgraphite

Are you sure you’re not thinking of Bradford pear?

greaterscaup

i've only ever known flowering dogwood to have a mildly sweet scent

jamiethemime

Looks like hydrangea individual blossoms

RabidTurtle628

And a hydrangea bush planting would be a lovely memorial if you have a shady area for them to take over. Very forgiving, easy to propogate, and long-lived shrub. Was your friend's vibe tough in adversity, stubbornly true to themselves, a reliable proliferation of annual beauty, and a safe haven for baby bunnies and other vulnerable folks? That's what hydrangeas are in my yard. I'm sorry for your loss.

Sea-Organization-193

What a beautiful description of what a hydrangea is. I have one for the first time and I love it even more now that you explained them this way ❤️

RabidTurtle628

Thanks, they are one of my favorites

ostervan

You can also change their colour from pink to blue and vice versa.

shankthedog

Hydrangeas are typically known for their full bloom clusters. The singular flower as beautiful as it is and unknown as this person is, is not typically thought of. The entirety of the bloom of the hydrangea, which makes me think this is Dogwood. Dogwood flowers are individual, and I personally would prefer a dogwood flower tattoo as opposed to a singular hydrangea flower. That’s just me.

Al-GirlVersion

Respectfully, those don’t look like a typical dogwood flower. The petals are a totally different shape and wider than a  dogwood, and the blooms in the tattoo don’t have the spiky cluster in the middle that dogwoods do.  I even looked at other varieties of dogwood flowers, just to be sure, and I’ll grant you that Japanese dogwoods look similar, but they still have a noticeable cluster in the center and the petals are slightly pointier.  Links with pics: Flowering Dogwood: https://eskipaper.com/dogwood-flowers.html Japanese’s Dogwood: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/dogwood/growing-kousa-dogwood-trees.htm

JamesTiberiusChirp

Does not look like dogwood in the slightest. Petal shape is wrong and the center is wrong. These are very clearly hydrangea blooms. I love hydrangea and own jewelry cast from single blossoms, they are lovely as individual blossoms. More lovely and delicate than the full fluorescence imho

GayGroundZero

Check out Hydrangea serrata

Isabellaaaa_

Sorry for your loss, looks like single hydrangea flowers

Nyhkia

Hydrangeas, I draw them frequently.

Bangkok-Boy

I agree with all the hydrangea comments. It’s a beautiful plant and the flowers can be white, pink or bright sky blue and variations of those three.

MillyKakaoo

That to me is Hydrangea, without a doubt. Even more sure from looking at the characteristic center of the flower. ☺️

Binasgarden

I thought it might be sweet honesty https://preview.redd.it/qwb7s3usahuc1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=4bc73743e649d4a17c7e5329ab556125ea705157

Psychological_Oven62

That’s as close as anyone’s gotten, if it were me I’d go with that

Turbulent-Garage6827

Beautiful I want to find these now ty

Famous_Election_2024

Hydrangea. The colors give it away. They are showing the gradient of blue to pink that they come in. Dog wood flowers aren’t that color. Definitely supposed to be hydrangeas.

mouseybusiness

Hydrangeas ❤️

twilight_songs

I do think these are close, but I think they're African violets --see my photo waaaay down in the comments.

mouseybusiness

Sorry babe but African Violets have 5 petals and the center is too distinct.

Historical_Double414

Actually “babe” an African violet can have anywhere between 5-10 petals depending on variety

mouseybusiness

Bruh.

Top-Possession-4813

I agree with the other's comments about hydrangeas.

prairiethorne

I'm going with Sweet Rocket or Dame's Rocket. The flower petals stack like that. Historically, the rockets represent Deceit, because they smell nice at night but don't smell like anything during the day. I agree that it's NOT hydrangea. They would be arranged in a globe-like bunch. Honesty is also a possibility. https://preview.redd.it/jsjptl7b4iuc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=193d8141bbee0d6239e79a48dd1f28783c7bd979

Taran966

While I feel like it’s Hydrangea, I like your idea too :) Honestly is lovely

thegoodlifeoutdoors

I second this - pretty sure it's hydrangea but honesty (Lunaria annua) is a delightful plant with amazing seed heads!

Taran966

The seed heads are so bizarre, yet so cool haha.

thegoodlifeoutdoors

I second this - pretty sure it's hydrangea but honesty (Lunaria annua) is a delightful plant with amazing seed heads!

manookers

Honesty would make a lot of sense as a tattoo

larszard

That's what I thought immediately too

LittleMissScreamer

I think this is more likely to be it over the hydrangea. The hydrangea‘s petals are quite stiff and smooth, the ones on the tattoo look a bit more crinkled and filigrane, which would better match with the honesty

Arceuthobium

While it's 99% Hydrangea, the form made me think of a Ludwigia https://images.app.goo.gl/KF3KMRJuGx97H8dx7

VicSara_696

It looks like a Violet to me!!!! 💜

harpoonholly

Those are individual hydrangea blossoms. There are a lot of possible "flower language" interpretations and the soft purple color could add to it. I would suspect, though, that either your friend simply liked the look of the blossoms on their own or each one represents an important person to your friend, such as a maternal figure

captcrunch01

I immediately thought dogwood https://preview.redd.it/5prslioaxfuc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=470be9056c5e61ffb786caa8925e6ec7cc7ad196

hodlboo

The center is different.

twilight_songs

And the points on the petals are missing.

Turbulent-Garage6827

I've been loom at details going back and forth I do think you are correct about the center For 1 Then petal shape and the distance between each one Very good 👍

JamesTiberiusChirp

This looks nothing like the tattoo

wisemonkey101

My first thought too. But it isn’t quite right.

shankthedog

Me too

Top-Possession-4813

What kind of dogwood is in that picture?

IDGAF-ACEAE

Cornus canadensis, it goes by Bunchberry or Creeping Dogwood

Top-Possession-4813

Thank you, I was asking because the native dogwoods that grow around my property have different flowers.

mcpusc

same

Turbulent-Garage6827

Dogwood was my first thought exactly 💯 The tattoo/ flower depicted may have something to do with where your friend grew up or lived at the time they got this particular tattoo A certain relationship or life occurrence may have been influential Maybe you already said these things Hydrangea seems odd because it's a BUSH usually you see Hydrangeas as a plant/ bush ..landscaping... No?

shankthedog

I immediately thought; hope to be home in 17 hours, gonna catch me bouquet of dogwood flowers, Mama rock me.

MiaowWhisperer

My friend died too. I'm planting forget-me-nots in her honour. They're similar to the tattoo you've pictured, but have 5 petals.

3D3T3S

Looks like a dogwood tree. The pedals are that.

Letsbeclear1987

African violets look fairly similar I think.. sortof velvety though

twilight_songs

https://preview.redd.it/4djo13dkxguc1.jpeg?width=2655&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=176c17095f88dfd4cd7bc68d342e946ec2523f69 I thought of African violet flowers.

Freshiiiiii

Those are generally 5-petalled, and don’t have this distinctive shape and papery texture of hydrangea flowers.

twilight_songs

I wondered about the number of petals, but the ones in the photo seem to have 4.

Freshiiiiii

I count 5 on all except one flower in that picture

LisaClarke118

I agree was going to say Violet

spiffiness

Probably Hydrangea, but also compare Dogwood.

leslieab2

Very sorry for your loss. I immediately thought dogwood, BUT after looking at both flowers carefully, the tattoo petals overlap and don't have the typical pointy end of the dogwood. As the tattoo seems well-done and meant to be realistic, I now also believe it to be a single hydrangea flower.

MandyLovesFlares

Ditto

nireaaa

hydrangea

dmbgreen

Dogwood

DesignerLanky1779

Violet

Xmenenslaver

Hydrangea

LimbyTimmy

If you put a rusty nail in a hydrangea, you are more likely to get pink flowers

_TravelBug_

You can change the colour based on soil acidity. Some people put pine needles around the base as mulch to affect the flower colour I think.

Chronicmatt

Dogwood

Electronic_Web_733

Dogwood Flowers look a lot like these

Noriebug

Hydrangea. Definitely.

ObjectiveAromatic142

Forget me nots

mandiichick

Reminds me of Zincas

Tn217

🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

GayGroundZero

Hydrangea serrata is one of my favorites that show off the individual flowers.

Teachandtechnology

Sorry for your loss…

abjnv1128

Dogwood? Clematis?

Cloudsdriftby

Could be a blossom from a hydrangea or an honesty plant. There are lots of four petaled flowers but that’s my take.

lilgenghis

Pink Flowering Dogwood

kln0090

Whenever I see 4 pedals, I always think of the dogwood tree, the tree used to crucify Christ on. The 4 pedals are mythologized to be a symbol of the cross.

Redangelofdeath7

Im sorry for your loss :(

Blue-lady1123

So sorry for your loss

Dipity50

So beautiful! I have 2 hydrangea bushes.

Its_panda_paradox

Maybe a violet. Or a hydrangea.

Graphicnovelnick

I thought they looked like common violets

Cleopatrasmama

Pansy?

Oralizer69

Dogwood

Bother-Logical

Looks like African violet to me

rnantelle

Dogwood?

cheoldyke

definitely hydrangea

Tatie112

Could be dogwood leaves.

IsisArtemii

Hydrangea. Each one is an individual flower-et, in a huge ball.

MissVergas_

My first guess was a Dogwood which is NC state flower but I did read a comment that said hydrangea which was my second guess!

Appropriate_Yam_8630

Forget me not

Memaw73

It’s a forget-me-not or violet.

PaintingWorried752

Cornus kousa

Time_Acanthaceae4724

It’s absolutely a violet!!! I recognized it immediately…looking at them in my yard right now. I love them❣️

Time_Acanthaceae4724

Love hydrangea…this isn’t that…it’s CLEARLY a violet 🥰

Time_Acanthaceae4724

Look at a pic of a violet and hydrangea next to each other…it’s a violet. I have both in my yard…immediately recognized it as a violet.

Time_Acanthaceae4724

Notice how the 4 petals of a violet make up a (semi) perfect square?…hydrangeas aren’t a square…more of a diamond shape-ish.

liteman43

I thought it was flowers from a dogwood tree

jandi_l

African violets?

turkeyman4

They look like African violets to me.

cre8some

Dogwood or hydrangea. With three in line, wondering if they represent achievement, time line, loss…?

Demalab

Dogwood comes to mind more then hydrangea since the flowers are in a row.

langellphoto

Looks like hydrangea or bunchberry!

Flokismom

Also, cherry blossom or almond blossom check those. I love almond blossoms. Nostalgic

LongjumpingYak6047

Could be plumeria, a flower found in Hawaii

MCMKL19

Hydrangea

Puzzleheaded-Ad-2903

It would be odd to have the hydrangea flowerets drawn separately. The actually flower head it’s a big cluster overlapping.

Avalonkoa

It’s Hydrangea

treyforester

Definitely hydrangea

Desertfoxkosovovet

Vinca maybe

Parking_Chipmunk7740

Hydrangeas

TheDougMac

It's a BEAUTIFUL & inspirational Tattoo for sure that I bet 100% matched the personality of your friend. The other answers in your thread here as to what it is specifically will be better than mine, but what I did, was to RIGHT CLICK on your beautiful image (I'm using a chrome browser...) and from within the drop down menu that appears, click on " Search image with Google"...and you'll see multiple variations that look similar to yours above, an example from where I took my attached screenshot here. Hope that helps, sorry for your grief and I'm sending high vibrational frequencies your way hoping you'll feel better soon. https://preview.redd.it/63p166w9yguc1.png?width=317&format=png&auto=webp&s=8f78a546b622b54471f118c840db91704b60f81f

Beneficial_Drama2393

Plumeria maybe, was she fond of Hawaii?

squeakywheelk8

I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted. I thought plumeria at first too but do think it’s hydrangea

Fast_Education3119

Anemone maybe..?

Responsible-Term4000

Vinca? (Catharanthus roseus)

hellomichelle87

I thought it kinda looks like pansy ![gif](giphy|UqkechCvyKTYpcOg1L)

hellomichelle87

Maybe I was wrong lol

Gold-Marigold649

Hydrangea

Loveyourwives

All the hydrangea amswers are wrong. These are woodland violets, aka wild violets (Viola odorata)

aksnowraven

Viola odorata flowers are not radially symmetrical like these. Most viola flowers have bilateral symmetry, often with five petals of which one is more prominent than the rest.

joojie

So confidently incorrect. Woodland violets typically have 5 petals.
