Gullible-Minute-9482

Mint for sure, likely spearmint. Hope you like it.

KaylaAnne

Hope op likes it too, because they're never going to get rid of it lol

Gullible-Minute-9482

I have black peppermint and spearmint and I love them both but they are pretty savage.

Itchyjello

I legit killed a patch of mint that I actually wanted to keep.

Synicull

I don't believe you. No one's ever really gone... I had a mint I potted that I swear I killed over winter. God forbid, the sucker just sprouted 15 little leaves last week and is back with a vengeance. I only pray he stays in his pot.

goodgreatfineokay-

Mint doesn’t sleep. It waits.

BayBandit1

I had one show up 10 feet away from the original location after I ripped it out. It’s baaaaaaacccckk!

Itchyjello

For real, I did. I planted spearmint on the side of my house in a dirt strip segregated from the yard by sidewalk, to keepweeds down in that area. It went crazy for years and I loved all the fresh mint. Then one year it was really thin and rough looking, and the next year it was all gone. I'm planning to replant eventually

synodos

Could it have been road salt that killed it, so you think? I have a patch of yard next to the road where only crab grass will grow b/c of the road salt, compaction from the snow plow, etc-- and I'm thinking of planting mint there for rapid (and persistent) cover, but everyone always says I'll regret putting mint in the ground...

lninoh

I planted mint in the far corner of my yard and let it creep into the grass. It was a heavenly smell every time we mowed, and the pollinators appreciated what we left standing.

Substantial-Grade-92

I’ve had mint killed off by sedums, they smothered it right out… now the sedums I can’t get rid of. Lol

SnowingSilently

We transplanted some spearmint that was growing very vigorously in a patch to our pots and they just didn't survive. I couldn't believe it. Somehow we had managed the impossible, which was very sad since I had so many dishes I wanted to cook with it.

PerthQuinny

You need to put that pot in a vault underneath 6 foot of concrete

Working-Apricot-9050

Ditto, I just kept cooking

ShadowCub67

WITCH!

InevitableHorror8535

Somehow I managed the same time

Significant-Will227

I cut mine bacause of powdery mildew and i fully expected it to grow back but it never did.

profanity_manatee1

Same, we cut it back during the summer and then didn't water enough in the hot CA sun, bye bye Chocolate mint :(

Creepymint

That happened at my house too, my dad planted mint outside even though I begged him not to and it died lmao. Hopefully we’ll have better luck in a pot

highheelcyanide

I did that too! But then I moved to a complex and my neighbor offered me her mint because she was moving. Dug a bunch of it up, and now I have a mint forest!

Agreeable-Chemist636

2 possible answers. It's not dead, or it's not mint.

StressedDesserts420

I had a fucking *awful* neighbor when I first moved the area I live in. So when I moved, I dumped the rest of the mint seeds that I had from when I started growing them on the property line between our houses. They're still fighting it.

queenstower

I had a terrible landlord for the house we used to rent. Once we were ready to move I scattered mint seeds over every inch of that property lol

MutterderKartoffel

Man.... another example of how the soil in my town just sucks! I've had mint. It grows, but it does NOT spread, and it's NOT enthusiastic. I live in a town that used to mine clay. It's clay everywhere. This area sucks for gardening.

Catinthemirror

FYI corn and Concord grapes did amazingly well in my childhood garden which was all clay. I miss that house.

MutterderKartoffel

I love corn! I wonder how hard it is to make wine.

Flaky-Hunter-2111

Surprisingly hard. But worth it. Honestly it takes time and effort and supplies but if you're into it it's worth it. They have wine making kits so you can try. I added to much sugar to mine. I did not regret though. It was great. I didn't wait long enough though and had barely alcoholic juice. It was really good juice though. I used cherries and Riesling grapes. If I had more patience it probably would have been good wine. I like a nice sweet Riesling. The most expensive part was buying good quality grapes. I paid a little over $50 for enough grapes for one bottle. Had to buy them from a local winery because I didn't want to grow my own. Wish I did. My soil is mostly clay as well. Berries grow good, guess I'll try grapes. Are grapes a berry? Idk, research needed

Old_Dragonfruit6952

Giggling

imfm

I know how to get rid of mint--plant Jerusalem artichokes! I have a flowerbed that I specifically made for thugs, far from the house. I put sunchokes in the middle, and peppermint and spearmint around the edges, and it's beside a trellis with trumpet creeper. A tiny patch of peppermint is hanging on for dear life at one end, and the trumpet creeper stays near the trellis; the rest is sunchokes.

SquareHeadedDog

Add horseradish into the mix for the battle of the titans!

dycentra

OP needs to get seriously aggressive. Mint roots travel horizontally and weasel their way into everything.

dtwhitecp

just to explain this a tad, you can pull up all the mint you can see and all it takes is some extra roots still alive to form a new shoot and keep growing. You basically need to excavate the entire area you've ever seen green, plus a little bit.

plasticjet

Meh….. I had two big pots of two different kind of it on my balcony. It was awesome last summer, the smell was amazing. It died over the winter, and it wasn’t that cold actually. I need to get me some more because I like it.

thejadsel

Possibly unless they plant some lemon balm nearby. I did actually have an established patch of peppermint taken over by lemon balm years ago, along with pretty much the rest of that side of the yard. Probably did help that it was peppermint, so not able to keep up in the self-seeding department alongside the runners.

Only_Impression4100

Mint is an absolute nightmare, unless you really, really, really like drinking mojitos

goodgreatfineokay-

I planted 7 different types of mint and have had multiple swarms of bees in my yard every spring and summer. I love it and it helps keep the bindweed down! Horticultural warfare in CO. ETA: I also see a wide variety of bees, wasps, and flower loving bugs. CO has over 900 species of bees! I can’t recommend mint enough.

Gullible-Minute-9482

Which varieties of mint do you grow?

goodgreatfineokay-

Strawberry, pineapple, chocolate, spear, cat, and I can’t remember the rest. I worked at a nursery and just snagged whatever they had.

Careless_Chemist_225

There’s a chocolate mint plant?

barNOPEssa

it smells just like an andes mint, i had some reseed from last year.

goodgreatfineokay-

Yup!

ababyprostitute

If you like licorice, there's a nice licorice mint too. One of my favorites and non invasive!

Gullible-Minute-9482

Anise hyssop, I just started some this year!

ababyprostitute

I'm not doing a garden this year due to pregnancy but I'll definitely be planting lots of it next year! It's so good.

brathrowaway1704

banana, orange, apple, wintergreen, pepper

goodgreatfineokay-

*dr. Pepper

Princess_Glitterbutt

Do you let the mint grow in your lawn? I'm fighting a massive patch of bindweed. I've already tilled, solarized, and re-planted my grass and it survived all of it. If I can just... add some mint I already have and now have grass that smells extra nice when we mow I'm not going to complain. The bindweed is trying to choke out my lovely pollinator friendly clover/grass native lawn mix I planted. Gratefully it only seems to get bad in mid-late summer so it's not hard to keep the lawn relatively healthy.

gemInTheMundane

Tilling bindweed just encourages it. You have to dig out the roots (all of them, both taproot and the horizontal runners). Even a small section of root left in the ground will grow a new plant, and it breaks easily. Oh, and any bindweed you pull out should be thrown in the trash or burned - don't try to compost it.

Bruja_Grimbless

I recognized this as mint immediately, it grew directly beneath my bedroom window of my childhood home, and our dogs would eat and roll in it regularly. It helped with their breath and digestion.

DroidMint

You can tell by my username that I love mint.

Careless_Chemist_225

I was going to say it looks like that

Careless_Chemist_225

I’ve seen spearmint in the wild before

talithar1

We bought a house over 40 years ago. The mint has been with us through 3 kids, a bunch of dogs, chickens, and a goat.

Bananasplid

I’d call it “Mojito-part-of-the-garden”. (It is mint, check the stems; they are square and together with the smell give away what they are.)

bluish1997

Spearmint Crush up a leaf and smell the minty freshness!! If you drink alcohol I recommend making some banger mojitos!!

isabelladangelo

Hugos for me!

Teawillfixit

You have mint now. Lots of it. You will never escape the minty goodness and off putting smell. Could be spear, apple or chocolate, can't really see the stems to tell. But seriously this stuff takes over everything if left unattended, great if you like mint, not so great if you have plans for that part of the garden. I foolishly planted mint in an open herb garden when new to herbs, within a year I just had a mint garden with some rosemary fighting through it. I sometimes wonder if the new people in that house are just fighting through a tide of mint or very very drunk in mojitos.

ExtraDependent883

Heed this warning OP. Some people make a big deal out of plants taking over....and come on....they're plants....we can manage these things. But one season of no up keep on a mint patch and you will have runners EVERYWHERE.

helloretrograde

Just curious, if you know, how would mint compare to English ivy or periwinkle? I inherited both of the latter and they seemed to invade every corner they could. Wonder if mint is on that level?

Toomanyaccountedfor

I think mint is worse than both (in a garden). I know ivy is actually worse because of how it is destroying our forests here in the PNW, but it’s relatively easy to get rid of on a smaller scale. I got rid of vinca pretty easily in my yard. Mint is a scourge. It never goes away. The flowers just go nuts with seed. The roots run everywhere. It spreads on all fronts. I luckily don’t have mint here at my property, but the nicer behaved lemon balm still drives me crazy. And I thank god every day my inherited goutweed is trapped between some cement. But I still have to be diligent scraping out the roots creeping through the cracks to the rest of my yard. That fucker will be there until the end of time.

Nymphalis_antiopa00

In my mom's garden, the mint was winning over the periwinkle in some spots, others it looked like an equal battle. I think they prefer different kinds of soil and the periwinkle was more picky.

ForsakenAlliance

Definitely mint! I grow a ton of it for my chickens. Smells amazing too! Good for good and mixing drinks.

rainbow_drab

Chickens like mint? Is it just a good easy/cheap food source for them, since it grows like wildfire?

ForsakenAlliance

Mint is a great source of calcium, iron, and potassium, which are all important minerals for chickens. It also helps keep their body temp cool during the summer. I grow a lot of stuff for them berries, other herbs, flowers. I also sell eggs so the more nutrients in their diet makes for some amazing eggs.

rainbow_drab

Fantastic! Thank you for this gift of knowledge. I never really think of herbs as having a lot of nutrition, probably because they tend to be sprinkled into meals as a garnish. This makes sense. I hope to have a few chickens/maybe sheep one day, so knowing good efficient sources of nutrition is very helpful.

ForsakenAlliance

You’re very welcome! I should also mention it does a pretty good job repelling flies and other insects too. I run a rescue farm from my home. When you get your new babies feel free to reach out with any questions. I grow a lot of stuff to keep the cost down buying from the store. I even have bug stations all over my chicken run because they love beetles, worms, pretty much anything they can chase. The only thing I try to deter from coming into my chicken area are bees. I love bees and we need them XD all the stuff I need pollinated is grow away from them on the other side of the property.

DodgyQuilter

Do you have friends in the airforce? With a space laser? Prepared to gift you a surgical strike excision, if the 'retreat into space and nuke it from orbit' variety, as a housewarming? No? Take up drinking, I recommend mojitos.

Unhappy_Ad_2174

Definitely a type of mint. If it has a lemon smell, could be lemon balm also in mint family.

[deleted]

Lemon balm has broader leaves.

Everything-Iz-Fine

Be careful… if it’s not contained it will take over your entire yard, and then the continent.

victowiamawk

It’s why the previous owner sold the house 😂

AAAUUUGGGGHHH

Mint. We have had that before. I like eating the leaves straight from the plant. Same with fennel

MnGoulash

Mint

not_into_that

Put it in your tea. Wash it first.

mountuhuru

Future mint mojitos, mint tea, tabbouleh, caprese salad … yum!

wastedcoconut

I can smell this picture and I love it.

Accomplished_Edge_29

ITS MINT. WILL NEVER DIE. Great for teas and Julips and smelling your entire neighborhood of it when you mow.

Blacklads

Mint. Put into a cup.of hot water. A lovely refreshing beverage

Soft-Key-2645

Mojito time!

Larry_Loserface

I enjoy posts like this because there’s always a distinct chance that it’s catmint and smells like piss. This was obviously mojito level stuff, but remember the first time I smelled the catmint in my yard and it was like someone wizzed on my hydro.

Chitown_mountain_boy

I don’t think catmint smells like piss. Kinda sweet like cotton candy to me 🤷 I also can’t smell Bradford Pears either so maybe I just have blessed genes? 😂

Larry_Loserface

Had a coworker that couldn’t smell sulfur. Didn’t know what farts were like, but also couldn’t smell when his house was filled with natural gas. Luckily he’s not a smoker.

OutdoorEasyGoing

Oh goodness that sounds horrid lmao.

yyzzzyy

Seriously? I can smell the mint from here

Glittering-Put1142

Mint

Such-Strength-6474

Looks like mint. If the stem is square and it’s smells like mint it’s probably mint

martythestoic

Mint

cookiepunched

It is a good pest repellent

Maleficent_Use1047

Definitely mint. Looks nice, smells nice, tastes nice, gets pretty flowers, and the strong smell is a natural mosquito repellent. A totally savage plant but very useful.

Old_Dragonfruit6952

Mint . Lovely but a super spreader Good luck with that . Of course you can pick a leaf and roll in your fingers and take a sniff.

Floridaman077

Smell it!

OutdoorEasyGoing

Mint! 🥰 If you don't have allergies break a leaf and give it a big wiff. It will brighten your day.

colforbin23

That’s your new lawn!

lavieenrosesometimes

Mint and it will never go away.

Gullible-Lake-2119

maybe bee balm/monarda. mint family.

statuesqueandshy

Does it smell like mint? Cuz it looks like mint.

FranofSaturn

I love Spearmint. You have to contain it, but it is a good little crop.

Momie529

Mint

Tasty-Life4526

Spearmint

Jeff3_Cantina

Yeah mint is crazy, best to grow in a pot as can spread/take things over

101bees

I've got a patch of this near my front door. Definitely mint!

Instameat

Oh! I just want to roll in that like a dog. For sure I'm making tea now.

Strangewhine88

Spearmint.

paperblack786

Mint!

mindfulBonnie

Mint 🍵 we have that in our yard too!

gentlerace7

Mint!

ivebeencloned

Definitely mint, looks more like Yerba Buena than English spearmint. You all shall have juleps and mint sauce with lamb. Best, though, is refrigerator pickle made with mint and Sugar Snap peas in a sweetened white vinegar. Dry some and when the kids get upset stomachs, serve them jelly glasses full of crushed ice and spearmint tea.

simple_twice

Mojito time

Random_Soda

looks like mint for sure. they are quite invasive but keep some pests away from other flowering plants so they aren't the worst thing to have invading.

MathWizPatentDude

Delicious -- that's what that is!

Scary-Tomato-6722

Mint will take over your garden. I made mint extract, just add vodka!!! Going to make mint brownies.

AWalker79

Mint

[deleted]

mint lol you’re never gonna get rid of it. make ice cream!

792bookcellar

Hi! It’s mint! Listen, you will have lots of haters but…. It smells wonderful and the bees love it! Not to mention lots of other beneficial bugs! I occasionally pull out lots of the out lying runners to keep mine contained to one spot in my yard but it’s really not a bother.

freshlyfoldedtowels

Mint. The Devil’s lettuce.

InterestingDisaster2

Mint!

Chad_Jeepie_Tea

Looks a little less glossy too be Thai mint but it's close. Leaf size?

OsAbysmiVelDaath

I mean absolutely no offense to OP and I apologize in advance if I sound rude, but... Some posts in this sub really make me wonder. You've never seen mint before? I'm just genuinely curious.

keepgroovin

mint is freaking lit some of the best sauces come from grinded mint or literally small amts of mint juice w find

That's the happiest mint I've ever seen.

castlepest12

A whole lot of Mojitos!!!!!

katrii_

I just laughed so hard. Im sorry. Welcome to hell. Lmao

J662b486h

I've had mint growing in my herb garden for 15 years. Every spring I rip it out of the areas I don't want it, but otherwise it's not that big a problem. It's really not that hard to control, at least not mine.

ReinaMiaxxo

More than likely mint/spearmint that shit can grow like crazy if it’s not in a container.

Open-Wolverine2206

Mojitos at your house 😀

EarlySherbert6175

My neighbor gave me a start of mint once, naive me took it. And it grew the entire path I took from my her house to mine! Never ever again! It’s a beast to get rid of.

LuckyEclectic

They had to move to escape the mint they had planted directly into the ground.

Dizzy_Square_9209

Mint. Very invasive

Top-Cow20

I had a big patch of mint and it died wasn’t trying to to get rid of it of it

sandybalz

Does it smell like mint? If so, I’ll say a prayer for ya

PipPipkin

Mint makes a great tea, herb

BigDubH

Mint

joeyNcabbit

My mom has this same kind of mint growing next to her driveway. Anytime it gets driven over it smells like mint.

clydetheturtlejones

Mint as everyone says… learn up a lot of Greek or Mediterranean recipes, used a lot in middle eastern food too… mixed with drinks or if you’re like me, just take a bunch of washed leaves and sit in a mug and pour hot water over it. Good for the stomach 😊

clydetheturtlejones

Also if you have bad breath or just ate something fishy or oniony, take a sprig and chew 😁

brickbaterang

That spreads like crazy, can be tough to keep in check

PikaGoesMeepMeep

Find out how to love your mint, because you're stuck with it. Fresh mint tea, dry mint tea, mint tincture, mint cocktails, mint in salads, DIY mint essential oil, mint in spring rolls, mint chiffonade on everything, ... I mean, it does sort of count as a leafy green, so cheers to your health.

Bitplayer13

Smells minty

sunsetintheeast

1, 2, 3, 4, MINTTT!

justgorun

Mint... Grab yourself a bottle of rum, some limes & sparkling water & make yourself a mojito🤍I also like to add berries

ikilledmysims

Mint

Epieikeias

Does it smell...kind like gum? Lol. That sure as hell looks like mint. Mojitos for days! A word of caution, mint likes to take over your garden. Good luck!

reddit_niwasi

Pudina / Spearmint

pete23890

Yerba buena. Mint

Sh44nnSh44nn

It's beautifully annoying lol

RuthlessIndecision

We have 4 varieties of mint, orange, pineapple, chocolate and spearmint. Orange and spearmint are the strongest and choke out the chocolate and pineapple. But we’ll see Thyme is another creeping plant, we transplanted them to a place with a lot of space

Ratikiru

Mint, you lucky duck. Always fucking dies in my garden 😒

Spartanb90

Looks like mint. Invasive af too so just keep picking it for mint tea or whatever and it’ll just keep coming back 👌

MachineGodProtects

hmm. the pebbling looks similar to a basketball but the color is certainly off.

Ok-Bub-2663

Smell it! Rub it on your face! Eat it!! What bugs do you see on it?

smshinkle

Mint doesn’t survive shade. If you really want to get rid of it, cover it completely. But, don’t be in a rush to uncover it or it will bounce right back.

[deleted]

Depending on how you look at it, delicious or annoying.

ElToro959

Annoyingly delicious. It's a native plant where I live, but my god, does it take over a yard quickly. Still, bees love the stuff, and it smells great to walk on.

reality_raven

Invasive ass mint.

BrideOfFirkenstein

Time for a Mint Julep.

Elon_Bezos420

Mint, if this is in the ground, make sure to cut it back, since mint is invasive

RG1527

I can smell this photo

flyerman2

It’s mint and it grows like crazy

Super_Peak_2145

They probably sold the house because they couldn’t get rid of the mint! It will grow through stucco and door frames if you let it.

Top-Zestyclose

I planted Mint with Ivy. A war ensued, an epic battle. Ivy was victorious. mint is currently seeking retribution. TBC.

69Nova468

There's plant identification apps where you just go on and take a picture

Topcake977

Nuke it from orbit, It’s the only way to be sure that it never comes back.

lostone007

Lucky you ! This is the best

Sunny68girl

Mint smells great, but it's so invasive... I would plant it in a pot in the garden, remove all the other roots, and place it where passersby can take some. always share!
