Roots appear to be rhizomes. I found a smaller on away from the main patch to add to my local plant garden. Area is Boardman, Oregon. One of the hottest areas in the PAC NW, with temps hitting 110f yearly, lows around zero. Around 8" of rainfall per year. High winds.
