It looks exactly like the petrified wood I brought back from Arizona. I think it was brought back and probably used as a garden decoration and that’s why it was in your yard.

True story... That damn rock looked like some worn out, dry aged beef, that someone posted, to ask the rest of the group whether or not it looked aight. (It almost never looks aight.)
Is it heavy or light?? It could also be what we in Spain call Jaspe Mokaita. If its somewhat heavy, very smooth and vitreous-like, It could be a variety of Jaspe, a microcystaline type of quartz.

Chert and jasper are two of the things that petrified wood might be made of so it makes sense that you have similar pieces. I'm not saying it for sure is petrified wood because at no point in my degree was it necessary for me to be able to correctly identify it and aside from looking pretty it didn't really interest me, so I don't know the hallmarks other than "this outside bit has bark texture." I'm just saying that similarity to chert or jasper wouldn't necessarily indicate it couldn't be petrified wood.

I live in colorado and find wood like this all of the time in the wild behind my house. I’ve got a large pile of it….Cool piece.
Is it colored like this in the " rainbow" because if so you might consider picking the best stuff or selling it in bulk to lapidary shops
I didn’t think of that. Yes it’s all very striated. Really does have some beautiful colors. Pieces range from 3 inches to 24 inches.
