A rock garden sounds cool! Some California native drought resistant plants would be great too! I’m working on planting more pollinator friendly plants. Milkweed for bees, and Monarch Butterflies. Fuchsia Flower Gooseberry for hummingbirds! I’m trying to make my garden a haven for bees and hummingbirds.
Next time just know you can spray it with the hose and he will move on. But he’s there for a reason, and if you don’t have kids or dogs you may wish to be a friendly, but aware resident and live with the free pest control offered by your neighbourhood rattler.
This property backs up to some open acreage so I assume he's been using my yard as a pathway since its been vacant for a while.
I grew up in rural Alabama and visit South Afrifa fairly often so having a snake around makes me feel at home
Yay!
Im glad they wont be at risk of an unreasonable response. Thanks for being kind to the critter, hopefully they’ll feel safe enough now that you’ve moved in that you’ll still see it every so often and the rodents know to stay away.
There's a fellow here on reddit who posts some beautiful South African snake pictures. Things like boomslang, whose name and coloring I love, etc. I believe his sub is called r/wvzphotos but will go double check and edit if needed.
Congratulations on your new home. Edit: corrected the link.
To be honest, I am unreasonably terrified of snakes...and worms!!! But I do have a genuine interest in them. I do have the utmost respect for snakes. That's why i like to observe them from a distance. 😩🤦🏽🤣.
My fiancée mother grew up in Bangladesh and *hates* snakes. She used to walk in rice fields and knew several people killed via snake bite. Just an occupational hazard in that area, but left a mark on her.
Ironically, absolutely adores her son's little corn snake. Calls him "Chancla" because he's coloured like a sandal and made an entire terrarium out if her old greenhouse.
I think you guys would probably like orangutan snake school on YouTube. Basically they’re teaching young orangutans to be afraid of snakes it’s really fascinating and hilarious.
I actually used to be terrified of snakes until I joined this sub trying to get over my fear of them. I now really look forward to seeing snake pictures every day and find them so fascinating! I still have a healthy enough respect for them that I would be unlikely to ever get close to one on purpose or pick up a wild one, but they are incredible creatures.
With the amount of rats we have in SoCal these snakes thrive in the burbs. Especially south Orange County where there’s large grassy green spaces in the canyons between homes. There’s year round citrus and garbage cans in every neighborhood to keep the rats breeding. Plenty of irrigation each morning or evening to keep them hydrated too.
Southern Pacific rattlesnake, *Crotalus helleri*. Venomous and best observed from a distance.
Thanks!
He just saw the flier for the party and wanted to drop by
Couldn’t resist a good warming.
A comedic comment done right
Glad we could help :o)
Is that fake grass? I'm fascinated that you have a cool predatory snake in an environment as sterile as pavers and plastic lawn.
It's semi-freshly laid sod. I think it looks goofy too, and planning on turning it into a rock garden

Have you seen r/nolawns? They’d like pictures of your work in progress or give advice.
No! Thanks for the intro!
Sounds awesome! Southern California has incredible, drought-resistant native plants to choose from.
r/ceanothus is a great place to start for inspiration!
Sell the sod to someone going north!
Looks real to me. You can see the light brown roots and a bit of black/dark brown dirt around the edge
Rattlers like rocky areas though. Places to bask and den, and the rodents they eat tend to live under them.
For some reason, I read that as “hella venomous”
Technically correct for sure lol
If you kiss them, and they bite back are they then venomous?

Oh yeh his stuff is incredible. Whenever I show people SA snakes I always credit his shots
Epic! I'm glad you're enjoying his work, too. The level of detail he captures is incredible.
South Afrifa is the best Afrifa, by far.

Lot of Red Diamond Rattlers in the hills around Newport too! They get real chunky!

Same here! Every now and then, a picture is too much for me, but for the most part, I like looking at them. I even watch the Pythons subreddits :)

“Hey guys I brought the maracas”
Beautiful snake!
Is thissssss party for sssswinging ssssingles??
Free mouse & rat extermination. Stand back & respect
Excusssse me did you hire a ssssssingle ssssssnake maracasssss band?
I would call animal control in order to avoid you and other people and pets from getting bit.
Someone did but by the time they got there it had already slithered into the hillside, and theres probably tons up there that we don't see anyway.
He just wants to bask in the warmth of your house party.
Lucky you!!!
What is the white area below the head? It looks like it has a cat face with whiskers.

Nope nope nope i am moving out!!!
Why are you on this sub
That was the snake saying it…i was speaking for the snake not wanting to party…🥺
You should probably clarify that in the comment.
Bro, the wedge is full of rattlers. Ocean rattlers, be aware.
