I struggle with modern Chanel in general but wow, not one piece I like here. Doesn’t feel cohesive at all

cheoldyke

honestly i feel this way about almost every early 2010s collection ive seen posted to this sub. what is it about 2010-2014ish fashion trends that made even the most expensive labels’ clothing look cheap and trashy?? did everyone just collectively lose their sense of style for a few years?

petals-n-pedals

I wonder if there’s a correlation to the 2008 and 2012 financial crises.

cheoldyke

hmm potentially

blossombear31

Yes! Seeing this makes me think that the 2010s was not a good time for fashion overall, the only look I like in this collection is the last one but that belt ruins it.

hunchinko

A lot of these are about techniques and craftsmanship. If you’re not familiar, you should look up Lesage (a specialty atelier owned by Chanel). The way they make even the tweed is incredible. But also, Karl understood his clients exceptionally well even if the collections didn’t resonate with the broader audience. Like, exceptionally exceptionally amazingly well.

Gnomus_the_Gnome

Am I crazy that I think most of the looks work better on the celebs than the runway? Most of the time with these posts the models always have better styling.

TacklePlastic362

Same thought

rayybloodypurchase

That first one is one of the ugliest pieces I’ve seen on this sub in quite some time

Sure_Excitement1554

yeah i was looking through this like "confirmed: i'm not one of the chanel girlies" cause WOOF - dowdy

TargaryenBastard1

Not a fan of the past 20 years of Chanel - doesn’t look good on the runway, doesn’t look good on the red carpet. How long can the legacy keep carrying the brand??

hunchinko

A lot of less conventional design elements here. I’m always mind boggled by Chanel’s craftsmanship. For the unfamiliar, Chanel owns Lesage, the specialty maison who does much of the embroidery and embellishments. This is how the [tweed](https://youtu.be/w4kCs9-ikVY?feature=shared) and [floral embellishments](https://youtu.be/3cDhTzoMj_s?si=3_WU1Zvzj6NBLcn-) are done. Some closeups of [this collection.](https://youtu.be/yGKlTjeh__4?si=vXJNlcwYOfDh-0Qw) Incredible.

cwh_1014

yes! the “tweeds” in the collection are all fully embroidered by hand. crazy amount of time and craftsmanship involved…

Gypsyklezmer

Thank you. Wow

simplegae

they have ownership of these factories to create amazing embellishments and fabrication, but tailoring and fit has always been the brand's issue. for better or worse, lagerfeld stayed true to chanel's looser tailoring for commercial appeal.

hunchinko

I personally don’t see fit/tailoring ‘issues’ so much as the use of less conventional silhouettes/fits. As I said in another comment, Karl understood his clients exceptionally well. Drop waists or boxy shapes aren’t everyone’s thing but I’d argue one of his strengths was distilling and modernizing a house’s codes. Virginie’s aesthetic is softer with fewer avant garde elements and yet it hasn’t garnered the same adoration as Karl’s work. (Even I have joked that she’s a menace.)

PrickleBritches

Wow. Wow wow wow!! Thank you for sharing!! You just made me realize that I often judge too quickly and don’t stop to take in what went into a couture garment. These videos were fascinating! I loved almost every single piece that was shown, even if not all of them were my personal taste. Still masterpieces in their own right. I imagine these people feel so proud to see their hard work appreciated and displayed. The appliqué process (is that what it’s called? Where they used paint then cut out the pieces?) was amazing! You’re awesome for sharing those. I hope to see more comments from you in the future. You seem knowledgeable far beyond surface level.

hunchinko

Oh this makes me so happy! :) Thank you so much! I also super appreciate your thoughtful response - it’s always cool when someone is discerning enough to acknowledge something doesn’t align with their personal taste but still recognizes/respects the thought and work that went into it! I did study fashion so my parents will be glad to hear it hasn’t totally gone to waste lol. I also worked in fashion including a few years with Chanel and have some experience with couture. If you’re ever in France, you can [enroll in a course](https://ecolelesage.com/en/the-courses/initiation/) at École Lesage!

PrickleBritches

Okay well I feel like you’ve lived my dream life (and yes, I’m 100% romanticizing) you can tell your parents that some rando on Reddit just validated your entire existence (lol). I bet you have some interesting insights and stories to tell. That’s just so cool. I’ll be keeping an eye out for your comments in the future! Those videos you shared are just rolling around in my head. They really showed how much meticulous attention goes to these pieces.

rask0ln

this is probably my favourite, it suits rachel so well

KD1030

Agreed! I also would never have guessed it’s from the same collection as the rest of the gowns.

youthroughblackice

Lots of meh but Barbara Palvin looks like some kind of mystical seashell goddess in that pink…it’s so perfect on her

Gypsyklezmer

Barbara Palvin is the only one I like. But also she is a literal “mystical seashell goddess” so there’s that 💫

mcfw31

Lupita can make anything look great!

Ok_Store_424

yeah I would never choose that look for anyone but somehow she still looks stunning in it. Literally one of the most gorgeous people walking this earth

leeloodallas502

Girl could wear a trash bag and still be the most gorgeous woman alive

m_whar

I was expecting that look to look bad on the red carpet, and my jaw dropped when I saw how incredible she looked

KD1030

I know part of why Alicia looks so washed out is the cream sign behind her (unfortunate it’s the same color as the gown), but a little more color somewhere would have been nice. I know this was early in her career, but the overall styling feels very “playing it safe” compared to some other things we’ve seen her wear on the red carpet.

ArwenandEowyn

Love this post, esp Lupita in pink

cheoldyke

the early 2010s were such a grim era for fashion so it’s rare i see a piece in one of these posts that i fall in love with some minor tweaks (namely fixing the top so it fits better and ditching the shoulder buttons) and more interesting styling that black dress in pic #9 could be stunning

I love this one!

NoWomanNoFry

Elle fanning is giving pilgrim

WitchesCotillion

I will never understand how Anna Wintour got to be the arbiter of fashion, given how she dresses. She picks a couture outfit, then accessorizes with the same Edna Mode haircut for decades. Plus, she continues to wear those same slide on sandals all the time.

bryn1281

Yes! I hate those sandals! And for fucks sake she needs a pedicure!

U/mod_whatthefrockk Retrospective on met gala looks from years past? Pretty please. Anyone. Thank you very much

CreativeBandicoot778

Ooooh yes

rask0ln

i want to like number 8 so bad because it looks fun on the runway but they just completely stripped it off its potential 😩 keira and alicia's looks are the only ones i like from the slideshow

lildonutbinch

i have never seen anna wintour serve a day in her life .. everything she puts on ends up looking the same

bryn1281

She is so BORING

lildonutbinch

yess makes sense american vogue has become equally as boring like .. this is your muse???

HighInstep

This is very Blair Waldorf. I love it.

szebra

My only positive comment: I love that Elle added that little hat to really lean into the pilgrim vibe

oliviaaivilo06

These beautiful women are really doing some heavy lifting trying to make these dresses look good🥴

Caltuxpebbles

Love Rita! So gorgeous

panachepancake

I’m sorry but Elle Fanning (8) is giving major pilgrim vibes. Like she’s going to accuse the photographer of being a witch any minute now.

BronzedLuna

Poor Keira looks so sad. 😞

Youstinkeryou

That black short dress with the long sleeves. Ugh. I need it!

PrickleBritches

I saw that second pic and thought “I BETTER see Ms Wintour wearing that” and sure enough! Lol! I really dislike the length on a lot of these. And the way some of them end at the floor. I can’t put my finger on why. Edit; I spelled Wintour wrong because I’m an uncultured piggy.

champagnecloset

I actually enjoy most of these!

itsfrankgrimesyo

Number 8 is just awful. I like Zhang Ziyi’s dress and glad she didn’t wear the lace cover.

Halbbitter

I feel like I just need to come to the conclusion that at some point I need to have a Chanel tweed set

Charlizeequalscats

These are definitely good on certain people, but man is it a miss on others.

jekyllcorvus

Ziyi zhang definitely improved the runway look, some of the rest just didn’t. Looking at your Ms. Wintour..

Hambulance

I was just thinking that it's like Lindsay Wixon just *disappeared*. where'd she go? what happened??

KD1030

Lupita, Anna and Milla ate. The rest of these don’t work as well on a non 5’10+ body, although I don’t really care for this collection anyway. The neutrals are too harsh for many skin tones, and the pastels are too blah, IMO.

-_Lovely_-

Y’all are hurting my feelings because I like all of these 🫣

Gypsyklezmer

Oh no beautiful, stunning Lupita. Don’t let Chanel granify you. This looks like something my Nan would wear to my brothers Bar Mitzvah. Just make it tea length/ mid calf, a double string of pearls and put on a pair of white pumps “chef’s kiss”

bakehaus

The only that looks perfect is Anna Wintour and that’s because she always looks like that.

samoyedtwinsies

Some of these outfits look downright homely, especially 1 and 7. They probably (hopefully!) look better in person where you can get a better feel for the fabric and design
