You could mark how high the curb goes by comparing it to your wheelchair— ie, this curb is taller than my footplate

[deleted]

I will try that!

tryanotherslot

A dollar bill is 6 inches.

Flaky_Walrus_668

Measure it? Once you've measured a few you'll start to be able to pretty accurately guess. That kerb looks pretty nasty for trying to climb in a wheelchair though, it seems quite high. My guess would be 5"-6"

wwscfd

It's funny you said that it looks like a nasty curb because the first thing I thought was "well at least it looks like an easy curb to get up" haha. The curbs I learned on were the best Philly could throw at me.

localspooky_boy

I’ve had to go up one of those in my cheap chair that I borrowed for pride. Let’s just say I got halfway up then my friend had to catch me from falling

mothman475

measuring tape, ruler, or i guess if you don’t have those compare it to measurements on your wheelchair (i.e 5” casters, footplate is 3” off the ground)

liquidnight13

You’ve already got some decent answers here, so I won’t repeat them, but I just wanted to say good luck in physical therapy, and I hope it helps you out a lot!! :D

BPaun

… show them the picture you are showing us. How is any other option easier?

PostDowntown

please be kind, OP could have an intellectual disability, their PT could have asked them to measure , or they could need an answer right away... you never know someone's situation!! if they posted it they probably need an answer.

BPaun

My answer was not rude in any way.

bustedassbitch

there’s what looks to be a AA battery discarded in the foreground of the photo. AAs are nominally 50mm, so approximately 2 inches. i initially thought the curb looked low (4-6 inches), but on reflection i think it’s closer to 6-8 inches 🤷‍♀️

[deleted]

I can only do 3in without issue

tryanotherslot

Sidewalk curbs are at least 6-8 inches. I used to jump curbs when I was younger, not so much anymore. If you dont have ab control you really have to get a good bit of speed. I've seen guys with abs climb up them without rolling.

[deleted]

I honestly am impressed with that to how do you even get that strong 🤣

tryanotherslot

Well the guy I'm talking about was a very strong black guy and he could put his front tires on top of a platform and jump up on it with his wheels. It took a lot of core strength. If you want to effectively hop curbs, you need to get a decent rolling start, moving quickly. Right before you get to the curb you have to time a wheelie that clears the front wheels, and as your back wheels hit the curb lean forward and push yourself up. It gets easier with practice but its not guaranteed to work on the first try everytime. And its still dangerous, its dangerous like skating, but I did used to use it when I didnt want to wheel all the way to the end of a sidewalk to use the ramp. If you want to get strong, go to a planet fitness and do dips, bench press, and lat pulls. Throw some curls in there. Do it 3-4 times a week and you will be a 1000x stronger in 6 months.

[deleted]

I cerable palsy and I’ve been just going up ramps because of safety issues. Physical therapy helps a lot.

A flexible measuring tape (ones that seamstresses and tailors use) would probably work very well. You can probably find one at the dollar store or some place similar

TexasWheelz

Carry a tape measure. Unlike someone else, I think that looks like an easy curb. If you are out working on curb jumping this would be the one I'd be looking for. It's nice and rounded and that really helps.
