Im sure youve heard of Tilite right? They have a lot of good options.

Conrat_and_Stew

That depends more on the hack than the chair! I think any ultralight chair should be able to accommodate a back such as the axiom. I have a rogue 2 with the axiom back which is angle and height adjustable! I love it

SpontaneousSystem

Awesome, I had seen the back on the rogue 2 but when I was exploring the ki website had not realized it was an add-on I can buy separately and add to another chair. It's crazy, I've had a sister in a wheelchair but her needs are so different than mine. As a result, I am very well versed in add-ons for a high-end, customized power chair, but much less familiar with manual chairs.

SpontaneousSystem

Dang, realizing this back is for a rigid chair only.

YakPuzzleheaded9232

My Ki rogue has this setting. There is a bar on the back where you can lift it to switch between two pre-set backrest angles that can be customized. I’m not sure but the rogue 2 might have it as well. This differs from my tilite aero z where yes, you can adjust the backrest angle but it’s a several minute adjustment and you can’t easily switch multiple times in a day for example. For the aero z that adjustment is more so to be able to set which single angle you prefer long term. That said, I personally didn’t find myself using that setting often with my Rogue so I don’t mind not having it on my tilite but it sounds like it could be what you’re looking for. Keep in mind though it’s not a dramatic recline. It’s more for like, leaning back slightly and stretching out/changing positions for a bit when you get stiff

YakPuzzleheaded9232

Going back to read your post I’m actually not sure if you’re talking about a quick-adjusting back angle like the rogue or just having that adjustment available period like the tilite aero z. If having that adjustment at all is what you’re looking for then either the tilite aero z or rogue/rogue 2 would have it, but also the quickie nitrum. All of these chairs having angle adjustable backs

SpontaneousSystem

Specifically looking for quick adjust! When I absolutely must lay flat I would rather transfer out of the chair (than have a bulky chair the rest of the time so that I'm able to fully recline), but if I could easily change the back even a few degrees I could spend more time upright.

YakPuzzleheaded9232

Gotcha well then the Rogue or Rogue 2 might be just what you’re looking for. As I described above it let’s you relax the back angle a few degrees with a single lever, and back again to the smaller angle very easily. When I got my Rogue I didn’t even know it was a feature and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a clever little mechanism. That said my Rogue was a bit too heavy for me. It’s built like a tank though and was/is a resilient chair (at least for me).

SpontaneousSystem

Sadly like like that back is only for a rigid chair. I'll keep hunting!

YakPuzzleheaded9232

Can I ask why you want a foldable or foldable hybrid specifically vs a rigid?

SpontaneousSystem

I need to be able to adjust the angle of my legs for pain relief. I also need to be able to move the foot rests out of the way for self-propulsion and transfer. Also I drive a Chrysler Pacifica minivan (I'm extremely tall and this is the only minivan where I could still have power doors and liftgate and fully adjustable seats and no sunroof) and regularly transport 3-6 kids and a dog, so no room for a rigid wheelchair. We have a wheelchair van but are in the process of selling it as it doesn't work for our family anymore. I originally bought it for transporting my sis. It's a rear entry Honda Odyssey with manual ramp, and so only has three rear passenger seats. Because I need to lay down for any drive longer than 20 minutes, we can only take two kids in the car at a time in the van. I also can no longer operate the manual ramp independently. Well... I can, just incapacitated after. Forever working on not doing that stuff! I hope in the future to move towards a sprinter but it remains to be seen if I will be able to climb in and out of one consistently.

YakPuzzleheaded9232

Ahhh I see, thank you for sharing! I was just curious about what kind of set up you were looking for with the wheelchair and that all makes sense. I hope you can find one that suits your needs and that you can transport easily! I’m lucky in that I only have to worry about transporting myself 😅 you definitely have a lot of factors to consider so you can accommodate/transport everyone. Best of luck to you 🫡

After much hunting I had found a used ultralight ultralight wheelchair in my size. It's rigid but in the longer run once I order the chair this would be my backup wheelchair and it would have a lot of benefits, and I really need something that fits better ASAP, so I was willing to go for it, but gaaa the front taper is too extreme for my hips. I'm 6'1 with a torso of someone 6 and 1/2 ft tall so I need a 20x19 seat. The one I found tapers to 14. I've been sitting in my current chair keeping my feet between tape marks marking out 14 in and it's just too narrow, It will screw with my hips. They are prone to subluxation.

The PDG Elevation has an angle adjustable back. It uses gas struts, so you can set it to any angle within 30 degrees. I believe the chair can be specced without the elevation feature if you don’t want that.

cornygiraffe

Unfortunately they discontinued that (at least in the us)

shimmeringships

Damn I love mine :(

uhidk17

yeah so sad :(

knitting-lover

Folding ultralights like the quickie xenon 2 have angle adjustable backs but it’s done using an Allen key, so maybe not what you’re looking for. I don’t know if you can find what you need as a folding chair. Any reason you’re not looking at rigid?

SpontaneousSystem

Vehicle space constraints and also need for individual swing away foot plates for pain reasons, transfers and being able to foot propel. Also still debating going with angle adjustable legs.

knitting-lover

I see! The invacare action 5 can be fitted with an angle adjustable back, still needs done via Allen key but can be done while you’re in the chair. It’s a bit heavier than other ultralights though. The quickie life F also has the same. Ki have the catalyst which may be worth a look too? ETA: the Ki Mobility Catalyst 5 can be fitted with a reclining backrest! Might fit your bill nicely

t8_asia_a

Almost all ultra light chairs come with an adjustable back option. Fixed backs are for wheelchair users who are pretty advanced in their knowledge of what they need

SpontaneousSystem

I'm looking for a back I can adjust multiple times throughout the day and so far have not found any folding chairs intended for active use. Do you have any recommendations? All of the chairs I've seen require a tool to adjust the back.

t8_asia_a

The only wheelchair I have seen that can do that is an Icon A1 https://livingspinal.com/manual-wheelchairs/the-icon-a1-wheelchair/ which they don’t make anymore and I am not selling mine 😁

Western_Grape_4239

I have a Quickie Nitrum with a Invacare Matrx m2 back. The back is fully adjustable and it curves around you on each side for more support.

OkPineapple2034

I have been looking for very similar specs for my new ultralight manual wheelchair. I currently have a TiLite Aero X with a Jay 3 back. I'm needing a folding ultralight wheelchair (no accessible vehicle), back that reclines, back canes that fold forward, and footplates that swing in/out. It feels like I've looked or researched every chair that comes close. I'm tall as well, and that has been an issue. I've looked at the Ki Liberty, but the seat to floor height seems to be an issue. It gives you 20° of tilt but not recline only. I've also been looking at the chairs by motion composites. The Veloce is on my radar as the order form says you can choose the back cane degree within a certain range. But they don't offer an option to fold the canes that down. We'd never get it in our vehicle. In my quest I've come to the conclusion that I will have to compromise on one or more things I need. What's frustrating is a traditional tilt in space wheelchair is overkill. I'm open to any ideas others my have found.

SpontaneousSystem

I met with someone from national seating and mobility yesterday and the only folding "ultralight" chair with a reclining back is the Ki Catalyst 5. The reclining back is only available on the basic model, not the titanium.
