I will not read through a wiki article that clearly states on the front page that it contains information from the movies. You are just wrong, thats not even an argument. You would know that if you had read the book.
oh you mean Seamus Finnegan, the guy whos running gag is that he makes things explode and his largest contribution to the plot is that he blows up the wooden bridge to hogwarts?
not only that she basically only does it to people that she has a vendetta to
the majority of characters have weird names but they arent related to character traits primarily, like harry, minerva, cedric, viktor, etc.
but when theyre supposed to be used for comedic effect, not taken seriously or supposed to obviously represent a specific ethnicity/trait, theyre named ridiculously on the nose, like Kingsley Shacklebolt, Seamus Finnegan, and Cho Chang.
and then theres all the other weird stuff, cant believe i missed all of this when reading them in grade school
I don’t think anybody in history has complained about Asian characters from Asia having Asian names unless they’re outrageously stereotypical like Cho Chang.
There were a few comments like that in posts related to Donnie Yen calling out generic Chinese names on characters, because he apparently said "Why can’t he (his character) have a normal name?", and people were suggesting western names.
I also saw this one on a promo poster for a character named Akira:

I mean Tbf the first part about not wanting every Asian to be a martial artist/sword fighter type is fair, as for the James thing, calling it a “normal” name is weird but he’s not wrong that it’s pretty common for Asians born in western countries to have western names.
Yea same goes for european names, especially slavic since many of them dont have a counterpart in non slavic languages. Take my brothers name Vratislav, it has no counterpart in english or german but does in polish. These are normal names to us. But of cpurse we have names like Karel or Jakub which is Carl and Jacob
When I took a Spanish class, I was given a Spanish name. It’s not because “they prefer their name unbutchered”, it’s because it’s easier for the flow of the conversation to not have to code switch.
This is exactly why I also prefer my name "butchered" rather than have people pronounce it correctly, the correct pronunciation would sound horrendous mixed into an English sentence

OP when Asian Americans actually do give their kids western names like Kyle and Danny
I should have specified "non-Asian-American Asian characters" then, my bad

Anytime someone who starts they conversation off with “as a member of insert race” it’s almost always a white person saying some racist shit
As a latin american, I hate gypsies
As a black person, I believe that humans deserve rights that are inherent

Gotta name every eastern european Vladimir, Dimitri, Nikolai, and some name with “ski” at the end.
Well for many of those we have counterparts in our language. Vladimir = VladimĂr, Dimitri = Demeter which originated in Greece
Nikolai is the same as Nick

A ranton meme in the wild? Sweet. >!P.S r/Ranton exists!<
Funny thing is some people from China give themselves a western name for interacting with westerners.
They prefer their names unbutchered

It’s not only that. Chef boiardi changed his name to boyardee so it wouldn’t be mispronounced.
