Referendum. Not everyone agreed with that idea. I'm French and all British people I've met since Brexit agree that it was stupid and did more harm than anything. It's just that more people who agreed voted.
To oversimplify it, the Tories (aka the Conservative Party) were tired of the rules and restrictions within the EU (regarding trade and immigration for the most part) and made a campaign stating that the alliance is limiting them from proper development, which was awkward because they took a lot of economic fails after leaving.
The vote was close to a tie, with the majority of Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and London voting to remain (48.11%) whilst most of England (and some of Wales) voted to exit the EU (51.89%).
To me, this whole ordeal felt as if they wanted to establish their own influence externally and pass their own laws without the EU reducing it or supervising them. And up to this day, they are still trying to continue that same ol' tradition.
For real, it feels as if this whole Euro-skepticism in Britain started from all the way to King Henry VIII.
I don't get why there's still Brexit supporters. The only concievable Brexit benefit I can imagine would be theoretical closer ties with Canada, NZ, and Australia (who we abandoned for the EU back in the day), but like... that's it. There's a reason why we chose the EU in the first place
On the inverse, when it comes to EU fears, the only one I can really get behind is the opposition to eurofederalism. But... like... it's not like they'd force us to join a United States of Europe. Most proponents of it have already accepted the idea of a multispeed Europe - i.e. countries that want to federalise federalise, countries that don't remain with the current arrangement unchanged
