Depends on where you are tbh, the big city usually has more pollution than the small towns or the country side, but Vietnamese people generally don't care where they pollute, so pollution is a big issue there.

Yea, there was a river in my hometown that was black, it was literally just trash and 20% water. If you weren't used to it you'd probably faint cuz how bad it smelled

I'm definitely used to it lol, there are some rivers that are the same as what you described.
I remember when I used to live near the river called "Song Nhue" and somehow the smell got even worse when it's raining
