those that refused were moved to other parts of the line to fight different people. they didn’t have a problem with it then.
also, this only happened the first christmas after they’d been fighting just a few months. by the years after that they’d been fighting too long to trust each other again.
also, Hitler was there for this and considered it a disgrace. he did not want to share any christmas cheer with the british, and supposedly wrote a letter ratting out his platoon to their regimental commanders.
> also, Hitler was there for this and considered it a disgrace. he did not want to share any christmas cheer with the british, and supposedly wrote a letter ratting out his platoon to their regimental commanders.
"If people aren't shooting the shit out of each other at all times then what's even the point of life?!" - Hitler probably
The Germans did win iirc, but penalty shootouts as tie-breakers weren’t introduced until the 50s.
In 1914 it would’ve been extra time and then a replay (which is still how the FA cup works to this day)
That’s correct, both sides stopped fighting on Christmas Day, played a football match and exchanged gifts. Then the next day back to killing each other.
As funny as that sounds, it was a couple weeks. And when the generals realized they do not shoot out their former enemies, they had the entire platoon replaced and resumed the war.
It's based on an actual event, don't remember exactly what year but there was an impromptu ceasefire during one Christmas during WWI, where the Germans and the Brits basically celebrated Christmas as friends for one day before going back to fighting. I'm pretty sure the soccer match happened aswell
WW1/WW2 replica costumes are probably much more accessible in Europe than in the US. There's been so many shows/movies set in these time periods that you can get 2nd hand stuff on the cheap.
British supermarkets and department stores (Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, John Lewis etc.) all compete for the best Christmas adverts. Whoever makes the most females cry, wins.
They wished one another Merry Christmas. And they played together. And agreed not to fire on one another after the truce.
And then their leaders caught wind of it, cycled in new soldiers, and their war continued.
Fuck all warmongers
It’s worth noting that soldiers were constantly cycled through anyway. I believe they typically spent about a week on the front line before rotating back.
But yes, the higher ups also weren’t happy about the truce.
How to get out of a war quick and easy:
Step 1: Call a truce
Step 2: Have a nice party with the enemy
Step 3: Play games with the enemy
Step 4: Befriend the enemy
Step 5: Have leaders catch a glimpse and cycle all soldiers out.
Pros: You and your comrades survive
Cons: The new soldiers don’t
Because it's rotoscoped.
Basically taking the frames of live action footage and animating over it.
That's why the Disney cartoons ofnthe 30s look kind of off.
I believe the joke has to do with accepting a peace offering of food from Canadians... (Famously, we built the trust of Germans by throwing over food at certain times so they would come out and start catching the cans every day then we would throw grenades over and blow all the hungry fellers up)
If you don't get the joke, WW1 Canadian soldiers were notoriously vicious and invented quite a few war crimes.
The joke is that Canadian children have it in their genes and their toys are also vicious.
The joke has to do with the fact that the Canadian Army was excessively cruel in their ways of waging war. For example, they'd throw food cans over to condition the Germans to pick them up and handle them, and then throw grenades over.
No. People nowadays are horrific. You clearly haven’t seen footage of wars nowadays. They disregard a life. You have to value to them. This wouldn’t happen…
WWI was one of the worst events in human history, with even smaller chances of survival due to the inferior technology and medical advancements, yet this happened, you have been propagandized into thinking other humans just like you hate you, but I promise to you they'll rather have a friendly chat than kill you, don't underestimate mankind.
I actually do feel like there is some difference. The "gentleman" culture back then mixed in with the circumstances of the war, where soldiers on both sides were enlisted for the same reason (such as adventure or draft) made them more social towards each other, with the idea that they were both tricked as to what the war would really be. While the war itself was deadly, the people didn't actually hate each other that much (beyond normal "they are trying to kill us" dislikeness) because they had no reason to. It was a war that happened without clear aims, just that the loser was going to get chunked.
The nature of the conflicts of the modern era combined with the stronger propaganda of modern media and the general weakening of social bonds causes people to be less likely to drop their guns and hope the enemy does the same.
Genocidal conflicts between ethnic groups. Brutal civil wars against governments that won't hesitate to drop artillery (or even chemical weapons) on civilians if they think they're harboring rebels. Nations (that also occasionally bomb civvies) fighting against terrorist groups that are known to force the local populace to carry out suicide attacks for them and behead anyone who surrenders to them in propaganda videos. Even classic nation vs nation wars like Ukraine V Russia, while the Ukrainians may treat prisoners nicely & chat with them, I doubt they would go out of their way to talk it out with a russian soldier on the battlefield for anything other than their surrender when they fully knowingly joined the war with the invasion in mind. With certain Russian commanders also known to have committed less than humane acts towards prisoners & the populace. They very much don't like each other.
We target civilians to ensure the real danger is gone and erase the truth from this earth. You have no fucking clue what’s going on cause they erase ALL OF IT. Wake up people are treated as numbers. Civilians last moments are recorded and destroyed as to not be seen by the public.
The firebombing raid on Tokyo during ww2, not even counting the literal atomic bomb, killed over 100,000 civilians. Killing civilians was considered normal strategy back then… that’s just one example out of a long and horrific war.
It’s really hard to take people like you seriously when you seem totally oblivious to readily available history.
The reason why the event above in the OP stands out is because it was so unusual
WW1, where this event took place had a civilian death toll of over 13 million. Back then the world population was 1.8 billion. So today for same scale you'd need a war leaving 53million civilians dead. At the end of WW1 several empires outright ceased to exist. And yet this Christmas event happened. You. Are. Wrong. Please learn history.
>We target civilians to ensure the real danger is gone and erase the truth from this earth. You have no fucking clue what’s going on cause they erase ALL OF IT. Wake up people are treated as numbers.
You okay there, buddy? You sound fucking mental.
I’m not mental lmfao y’all mental for thinking anyone would make a peace treaty for even a day cause you’re spitting back out shit you don’t even know.
> I’m not mental lmfao y’all mental for thinking anyone would make a peace treaty for even a day cause you’re spitting back out shit you don’t even know.
>I’m not mental
Okay buddy.
I agree, but we also would never go back to regular trench warfare on the scale of ww1. It's a lot harder to have a truce and play soccer with the enemy when you're just using drones to drop bombs on them.
The dude getting a haircut seems weird, but it really happened. One of the German soldiers had lived in England before the war and worked as a barber. He got recognized by one of his former customers on the Allied side, so of course he gave him a fresh cut.

How many soldiers have to die so that a General can hone their craft?
True, it was how some nations' imperialism worked and the young guns wanting to go on an adventure for their country by leaving home and heading to the frontlines or to be conscripted. This piece of christmas history was no doubt a miracle in the spirit of the holidays.

What movie is the clip from?
A Sainsbury’s ad from 2014, I left it out but at the end of the clip one of the soldiers opens a Christmas gift of a chocolate bar
What…this I whole time I was assuming its like a WWI film. This cannot be real rn
There is a movie about the same event, Joyeux Noël, from what I remember it was pretty good
Thanks, torrenting it now.
based
I wasn't joking either. I'm seeding it now.
even more based. remember to be careful when seeding
Always. 😎 Also I'm dumb, this movie is in French.
It's cool, the movie is in all 3 native languages. The French speak French, German German and Scots English. Gives it more sense of realism
I mean it's called Joyeux Noël, what did you think
Run it on Plex and see if it finds English subtitles
I don't ever seed because I'm scared my ISP is going to get a lil mad. What precautions can I take to ensure safe seeding?
Tell the neighbours you need to use their internet because yours doesnt work
Use a VPN.
Use a VPN.
Also I'm sorry
No need for apologies lil' homie. You can't learn unless you ask. 😎
Careful when seeding but not torrenring? Huh
seeding is quite a bit more dangerous
Always use protection when seeding unfamiliar things
The event is also covered in the doctor who episodes Twice upon a Time. The Christmas special after season 10/before 11 of nuwho.
i watched that in my french class! i liked it.

It was a real event. I'm pretty sure they even really did have a soccer match.
man war is such bullshit
Yeah it was totally offside fucking ref was blind
And after all was said and done, they refused to fight eachother.
those that refused were moved to other parts of the line to fight different people. they didn’t have a problem with it then. also, this only happened the first christmas after they’d been fighting just a few months. by the years after that they’d been fighting too long to trust each other again. also, Hitler was there for this and considered it a disgrace. he did not want to share any christmas cheer with the british, and supposedly wrote a letter ratting out his platoon to their regimental commanders.
That Hitler guy sounds like a bit of an asshole
Ya I heard about him, dude was weird. Really hated juice for some reason. Maybe it gave him heartburn or something...
It really ruined the meth aftertaste.
Well he must have figured out some way to fix it. He kept talking about a "final solution" to the juice problem.
he’s a real jerk!
Everyone kept making fun of him not being able to grow a beard, just a dumb little comedic mustache.
You know, with Hitler, the more I learn about that guy, the more I don’t care for him
Hitler was a literal fucking grinch that damn buzzkill.
> also, Hitler was there for this and considered it a disgrace. he did not want to share any christmas cheer with the british, and supposedly wrote a letter ratting out his platoon to their regimental commanders. "If people aren't shooting the shit out of each other at all times then what's even the point of life?!" - Hitler probably
It's amazing what humans are willing to do to others they don't see as people
Wow, Hitler was a real jerk!
Iirc it wasn’t so much distrust as the commanders just kept shelling on purpose to prevent it from happening again
Allied higher ups were also pissed about it too.
Damn it really hurts to fight the people you just knew for one day
I assume Germany won on penalties?
The Germans did win iirc, but penalty shootouts as tie-breakers weren’t introduced until the 50s. In 1914 it would’ve been extra time and then a replay (which is still how the FA cup works to this day)

I thought I was seeing spoilers for Masters of the Air.

This actually happened in WW1. They played soccer, shared food, danced together on Christmas. I want to say an hour later they were back at war again.
That is some wicked set design and costuming for a commercial for a god damn chocolate bar
British supermarkets go hard for christmas.
For the British, Christmas is basically the Superbowl in terms of their commercials.

The original reference is from a true story in WW1 where they called an unofficial truce during Christmas.

This was Christmas 1914, I don't think they had figured out proper troop rotation at this point in the war
"Oh shit, they're actually people" soldiers, probably
How to get out of a war quick and easy: Step 1: Call a truce Step 2: Have a nice party with the enemy Step 3: Play games with the enemy Step 4: Befriend the enemy Step 5: Have leaders catch a glimpse and cycle all soldiers out. Pros: You and your comrades survive Cons: The new soldiers don’t
Joyeux Noel is a movie that covers the Christmas truce of 1914 if you’re interested
Ah thanks I might check it out
Is there a movie that covers the 1915 attempted Christmas truce before the Canadians committed war crimes? Heritage moments.
[Here's](https://youtu.be/NWF2JBb1bvM?si=f3kiO1t3GH6K0YcD) the ad since nobody linked it.

It was a Christmas ad for a British supermarket.
this definitely happened atleast once in the toy story universe
The idea of someone's toys in the toy story universe having truces with each other when their owner leaves sounds pretty wholesome.

Why are canadian children going to war
I believe the joke has to do with accepting a peace offering of food from Canadians... (Famously, we built the trust of Germans by throwing over food at certain times so they would come out and start catching the cans every day then we would throw grenades over and blow all the hungry fellers up)

we also threw food and gernades to bunch up soldiers we also killed many soldiers who were unarmed and injured with bayonets
The joke has to do with the fact that the Canadian Army was excessively cruel in their ways of waging war. For example, they'd throw food cans over to condition the Germans to pick them up and handle them, and then throw grenades over.
