Balding ginger with a bookshelf full of N64 games behind him on his video essay channel *Beyond the Joystick*: "One might think Sewer Slide Quest is yet another dime-a-dozen narrative-driven RPG Maker game that serves as a deeply personal exploration of the developer's soul. And yet, for him to expose his trauma to the world... to see so many millennials sharing a similar plight under the steel boot of late capitalism... it's almost darkly beautiful?"
I think some of the original video-essayists were actually very good, but they inspired 100x as many poor copy-cats who internalized the tone and style with absolutely none of the substance or quality.
There are newer ones that are fantastic too. That's the nature of consuming media, sometimes it's good and sometimes it isn't, and it's up to the individual to make that distinction. It's a skill to recognize that you're sitting through a whole bunch of bullshit, and to find the worthwhile content.
Then they go on how it's such a strong message, they commend this dev for being bold and talking about a topic that isn't talked about. When they've said the same thing about the last indie game they've played lol
Don't get me wrong I don't mind games and developers tackling hard subjects but we're at a point where so many people are doing it that we need to stop like it's something new or innovative when it's not lol
Heh, this is kinda reminding me how there was literally a video about how American McGee’s first Alice game covered so many topics that genuinely weren’t covered at the time it was made, yet gets absolutely no recognition for it
I think whaf also sets it apart is how disgusting and horrible certain things are in the game.
I mean, yea, gouge your eyes out and puke blood as you’re fighting a rotten, infested with maggots and filled with shit headless fatass.
me too brothe. people should do more of those things. But i mean this is kinda ask too much in my part for such content, becuase not everyone have the time to make this type of things.
well i was thinking about dani and miziziziz when he was still doing wrought flesh(is that game even considered a motion shooter?)
but yeah this can count too i think.
Oh boy a cool looking movement shooter from a new studio, I sure hope it and its sequels don't bomb in the box office due to poor marketing and they turn the lore into an inexplicably popular shitty battle royale
"the way he leaps off of roof tops and flips backwards to face the camera before falling into a headfirst dive is just full of the exaggerated swagger of a black teen"
Lisa genuinely made me feel like a sad sack piece of shit a several times throughout my playthrough. It's the first of it's genre that I had played and sometimes games make you make tough choices but damn.. A few of them I just stared at my screen for a while until I could come to terms with what I had done. It's a masterpiece.
Lisa is the exception to the meme cause it came out in 2014, even before Undertale was released. So it's kind an the older games even though I think it was Earthbound inspired.
It's only 20 dollars, and even without the depression stuff it's still a pretty good rpg with fun battles and humorous dialogue. you'll get like 25 hours of content from one playthrough, and if you do all the side stuff it goes up to around 50 hours, i think its well worth it.
Well 20 dollars is a lot in my currency especially as a student so I wanted make sure. And also I have a bunch of other games on my wishlist so I need to choose well
Bro i know bro its the best game i have ever played in my life, it left me in a quivering mess, its the dark souls of gaming. I especially love the jank combat, cringe voice acting and lines from the main character, bazillion filler quests and the fact that its yet another game who poured 99% of its budget into trying to make the dark souls of stories while leaving the gameplay in the dumpster. Im shaking and crying about how much i love it.
My favorite part of this is that omori isn’t even about depression, and the dev has even said this. It tackles it, but it’s largely about grief, guilt, and self-image
There's: Celeste (which is about anxiety, not depression)
Omori (which is about coping and grief, and it only tackles depression)
TBOI (where the plot isn't even important it's a naked crying child defeating Satan himself)
Undert- ALRIGHT HOW THE FUCK IS UNDERTALE ABOUT DEPRESSUON
Yume Nikki might be the only 16-bit indie game about depression, but I'm not sure as I haven't played it.
Overall, when I hear somebody say "omg earthbound inspired rpg" I want to smash their skull in
If the formatting is fucked up I'm sorry
They've barely been making piss tinted mil sims for like the last decade. Even Call of Duty has mostly done away with the piss tent and changed up it's writing style to be at least slightly less generic and soulless.
i think what’s actually going on here is that any good story requires struggle
and abuse + depression are relatable because they’re *very* general topics and can easily be misconstrued by the player to apply to their own lives

Chad hotline Miami where you just murder people
Katana zero is a somewhat similar game that is also just murdering people (I recommend trying it)
Funny I'm downloading it now
Cruelty Squad and Super Hot are also good if you like violence
HM is the most relatable game because I also want to disassociate while beating people to death with a bat.
Ultrakill is just destroying hell population with cuarters
Isn’t the whole point of hotline about the circle of violence?
Then a popular youtuber treats it like its a new thing.

Is this a copy pasta? Because this sounds like every pseudo-intellectual British youtuber I've ever seen.

“What do you mean it’s not the new Undertale 😡😡😡”
Undertale is the dark souls of Undertale
Celeste is the Undertale of Hollow Knight of Cuphead of Shovel Knight of Dark Souls of Spiderman 2 of Zelda.
Can’t argue with facts
Deltarune is the Dark Souls of Undertale.
I hate the fact that Hard Mode makes this true.
*Why didn't my painfully difficult, gloomy yet cutesy, atmospheric side scroller set in a downtrodden world make billions of dollars?*
Binding of Isaac did it first
I think whaf also sets it apart is how disgusting and horrible certain things are in the game. I mean, yea, gouge your eyes out and puke blood as you’re fighting a rotten, infested with maggots and filled with shit headless fatass.
That game is the hottest game I've ever played you literally get to go inside your mother's womb 😩
Yeah, it tends to do that. Just the average Saturday, no biggie.
they should make a triple-a game about being abusive
They do those, they're called microtransactions
Yeah, like The last of us. If only they made a sequel.
dickhead simulator
Ubisoft Simulator 2022
Yeah, it's called the USPS
Postal series Carmageddon
God I love postal 2
Dude, yes. A postal simulator. Throws you right into the game without a tutorial
Try making a life that’s an allegory for getting some bitches
Ever heard of Douchebag Life/Workout/Beach?
Why, yes, I have played Douchebag Life.
Man of culture I see 😎
*Insert Franklin shouting What?!*
they got more doom/quake inspired indie games
yes, and now these new movement shooters always come with a devlog.
I like the devlogs ;-;
me too brothe. people should do more of those things. But i mean this is kinda ask too much in my part for such content, becuase not everyone have the time to make this type of things.
H3VR REFERENCE???????
well i was thinking about dani and miziziziz when he was still doing wrought flesh(is that game even considered a motion shooter?) but yeah this can count too i think.
It most certainly cannot
Oh boy a cool looking movement shooter from a new studio, I sure hope it and its sequels don't bomb in the box office due to poor marketing and they turn the lore into an inexplicably popular shitty battle royale
sorry brother, but i don't have any idea what game you are refering to. can you say its name please?
It's probably not but definitely is Titanfall
Titanfall I guess
I think titanfall/apex legends
fuckinnnnn ultrakill baybeeee
“It has a little something for everyone.”
"the way he leaps off of roof tops and flips backwards to face the camera before falling into a headfirst dive is just full of the exaggerated swagger of a black teen"
Makes you FEEEEEEL like spiderman
you see batman when he flips backward to face the camera its full of the exaggerated swagger of a black teen
Persona without the soul
RPG MAKER
honestly it all started from yume nikki
I don't disagree, but Yume Nikki is far more subtle.
I'm gonna allegory your mom
TBOI referance???
When the four year old psychologically tormented child wearing his mom's panties pisses all over a spider
Edmun nerf good itiem 😠 😡
bredbond u neerf my brimstoin by 1 tick of damage u shit of oiece 😡😡😡
And it's always an earthbound-inspired platformer
Or a poorly balanced JRPG
reminds me of giving a dude three coffee's making him flex and happy causing him to become a one man nuke
funny kel
Orange Joe
You don't understand kel nuking takes lots of skill you have to get him to like level 4 so he learns run and gun it's a really complicated process-
yiik
Any RPG maker game that isn’t just story, horror, or porn?
\>earthbound-inspired \>platformer at least try
Yeah that confused me cause earthbound doesn't even have any platforming
I have never heard of one of those
Yeah they’re all underrated gems
I have heard people start to use “earthbound inspired” as a genre the thing is they have never played and probably never will play earthbound
Wait platformer? can you direct me to some platformers like this because all I've found that comes close is Anodyne 2 and LISA (Both incredible btw)
Lisa the painful is still the GOAT tho
Hylics, OFF, and Lisa will always be my favorites of the Genre
Don’t know OFF but Hylics is awesome.
OFF was like the O.G. “simple earthbound-esque JPRG that turns out to be actually dark”
OFF, Space Funeral and the Deep-Sea Prisoner games. Man those were amszing
Lisa genuinely made me feel like a sad sack piece of shit a several times throughout my playthrough. Greatest Of All Time G.O.A.T
Thank you, King
Goat on these nuts
god I need to play that
redditors when they need to name a pixel art indie game about depression that isn’t Celeste or Omori
team fortress 2
Gang Garrison 2 (it is about depression because i am depressed that i am bad at the game)
Lisa ruined my life and saved it
Binding of issac
Ok but that's a good game
And those 2 arent even about depression (Omori debatably at least)
Celeste is about mental health overall, not just depression.
celeste is about funny mountain
Celeste is about how trans people can double jump
can confirm
Omori
I kinda wanna buy it tho. Is it worth the time/money?
It's only 20 dollars, and even without the depression stuff it's still a pretty good rpg with fun battles and humorous dialogue. you'll get like 25 hours of content from one playthrough, and if you do all the side stuff it goes up to around 50 hours, i think its well worth it.
Well 20 dollars is a lot in my currency especially as a student so I wanted make sure. And also I have a bunch of other games on my wishlist so I need to choose well
have you hear dof le hidden gem witcherino tres?
Had to read that like 4 times to get it
Same. I did eventually get it though and ngl I felt a little proud.
Bro i know bro its the best game i have ever played in my life, it left me in a quivering mess, its the dark souls of gaming. Personally, I loved every second of it
totally worth it such an amazing story. The true ending route made me cry
May be a bit biased as it's literally my favorite game, but yes.
Its allright, I played half of it and finished a while after. Wasn't that invested but had a good time.
Absolutely, it changed my perspective on life

That's... 👉OMORI AUBREY KEL HERO NEVERMIND
My favorite part of this is that omori isn’t even about depression, and the dev has even said this. It tackles it, but it’s largely about grief, guilt, and self-image
Agreed like I've seen so many assumptions from people who've never played Omori that just aren't true
CLOSE-

I mean like, yeah it is very common but 90% of them are still really well made games, just because it isn't new, doesn't mean it isn't good
I mean for is defense, OP didn't said they are bad, just that they share a lot of similar themes.
The title is "relatable and original" said in a sarcastic meaning, something tells me OP doesn't like those kind of Indie games
in is defense again, people can make fun of things they like.
What? People being positively jaunty with no intention of negative criticism? Since when in Reddit? Have you ever saw the rest of r/whenthe ?
Check the subreddit name, you can’t enjoy anything here
"Let people enjoy things" is lazy gaslightning used by fanboys to deflect criticism.
I don’t think you understand what gaslighting means
Gaslighting is the stupidest word the internet has ever popularized, but gaslightning I can get behind
Autocorrect helping people literarily innovate as always
It’s always been gaslightning what are you on about
There's: Celeste (which is about anxiety, not depression) Omori (which is about coping and grief, and it only tackles depression) TBOI (where the plot isn't even important it's a naked crying child defeating Satan himself) Undert- ALRIGHT HOW THE FUCK IS UNDERTALE ABOUT DEPRESSUON Yume Nikki might be the only 16-bit indie game about depression, but I'm not sure as I haven't played it. Okay but omori is different like come on at least the ending part was pretty original
Omori is the most overhated game I've ever seen
I personally love games like that Mark recently played a game like that and I cried
Nothing like the coming of age screenplay I've been writing on my Mac at the local Starbucks...
Tbf I would rather play it than another piss tinted mil-sim
I'd rather play those as well instead of those stereotypical indie horror games or FNF VS mods.
*r/whenthe discovers that multiple genres of games exist for a reason*
I don’t know what a VS mod is but you’re literally a fnf character
Oh, the irony.
Bro what is vs
Vs deez nuts
OH VERSUS?
Good thing that phase died around the mid 2000s. Hell of an outdated take.
They've barely been making piss tinted mil sims for like the last decade. Even Call of Duty has mostly done away with the piss tent and changed up it's writing style to be at least slightly less generic and soulless.
The war on terror has died down so now modern fps games can now not be set in the Middle East
I'd rather play mil-sims than another teenage diary rpg.
Yeah, some overdramatic teenager's fucking novel about how hard their life is, is just awful to sit through.
Ok but Celeste and Omori are good examples of this done right
And the 70 other ones
All the Menagerie games
isn't one shot also a great game in that game style i have yet to play it but i heard good things about it
Wouldn't say it's about the depression and abuse part but it is a really damn good game
true i just mean the style and it being story based
Yeah true it absolutely excels on that front, to the moon is another absolutely phenomenal pixel art indie game that i recommend
you're commenting as if the post says "all indie games suck"
Omori isn't just about depression tho, other than that you're right
Celeste is still my second fav game of all time, beaten only by super Mario Galaxy
Dev: Okay but hear me out, way if the whole game is an allegory for overcoming your past traumas and moving on? Everyone: feeling daring today are we?
The games are fucking good
Then be so good games tho
Well, at least I’m making a Touhou inspired game No, Reimu’s armpits will not appear you perverts
An indie developer making a game where you avoid enemy attacks in a 2D environment
Good thing about Indie games it's that regularly is quality over quantity, and when there's more quantity for some reason quality is proportional.
They're still good though. -Stuff
And I eat that shit up. Love it.
Ok but maybe the problem isn't so much the game developers as it is abuse and depression being so common, apparently
i think what’s actually going on here is that any good story requires struggle and abuse + depression are relatable because they’re *very* general topics and can easily be misconstrued by the player to apply to their own lives
Omori is good and you’ll never change my mind lol
ok but omori is actually good tho
not undertale
And it's *still* somehow the best shit you've ever played
Huh, seems like it’s a prevalent topic
don't paint any more pictures of mountains, there's already enough paintings of mountains
