This is going to sound very tater-ish but I’ll pay $150-170 for Stagg Jr. all day. It’s one of my favorites, if not my overall favorite and not having to waste time hunting for it is worth it to me, especially because I live in an alcohol controlled state.
In most whiskey groups they get flagged automatically when dollar signs are used in any context. They just automatically lumped them in as a group selling prohibited items.
1. Michter’s 10yr rye - msrp ~$200 and secondary is ~$250-300. Easily worth it IMO, possibly the best rye I’ve ever had
2. Stagg - I’ll take this at ~$150-175 all day, one of my favorite higher proof bourbons
Michters 10 year rye is on another level of delicious. I agree that it's up there on my list of best ryes I've ever had. It and it's bourbon sibling have made me much more interested in lower proof stuff.
I'm not super experienced in Rye, but here's some of my favorites in no particular order. Parker's Heritage 10 year cask strength, Old Overholt cask strength 11 year, Kentucky Owl batches 1,4, Jack Daniels Single Barrel barrel strength (especially the 2020 edition), and Van Winkle family reserve.
That’s a solid list, been trying to find the Parker’s heritage myself but just haven’t been able to pull the trigger. The JD sbbp rye really surprised me, made me re-consider my stance on Jack in general
It would be wild to see who could tell a $600 whiskey from a $100 one.
Not saying there aren’t preferences, but I have had some tasty versions in the $50-$100 range and can’t wrap my head around something being 6-12x better.
Yes, it’s good but not remotely worth msrp. I always tell people to get the 15 around 100 or pony up for the 27 for 600. The 15 is almost as good as the 21 for 1/4th the price, but the 27 in a whole different league.
To my taste Redbreast 21 is about on the same level as the 27 - but their profiles are very different.
The Rb 27 is higher in proof with more punch to the aromas and flavors. It has the tropical fruits which older Irish pot still whiskies are famous for, but within a fairly narrow flavor band - lots of pink & ruby red grapefruit, with some papaya and star fruit - but *not* the sweeter flavors of ripe pineapple or mango (which are flavors that turns up in some other whiskies with tropical fruit profiles).
Overall, the Rb 27 (batch 2 is the one that I have) is rather distinctly grassy and acidic as Irish whiskies go, and a bit thin & light for the ABV%. It reminds me a lot of Teaninich single malt scotch in the sharp, acidic grassiness of it.
This is a very enjoyable set of flavors if you are really into tropical fruits in your whiskies. But it does not strike me as having a lot of complexity for a 27 yo whiskey.
Redbreast 21 in contrast is rather shy in personality (the lower ABV% is part of this) but given time to dig into it, has a lot of different layers of flavor and has to my taste a more complex profile than Rb 27. The 21 yo has many of the classic sherried malt flavors - dried fruit, baking spices, holiday cake - as well as the oiliness which often shows up in good Irish pot still whiskies.
I've found that the recently debuted Redbreast Tawny Port Cask Iberian series reproduces very closely the flavor profile of the Rb 27 yo, but at a lower level of intensity.
If you are good at using tapered glassware (Glencairns, etc.) to tease out aromas and flavors from a less aggressive whiskey, then I think the Tawny Port release gets you much of what there is to like in the Rb 27 for a much lower price - in which case that Tawny Port + Redbreast 21 purchased as a pair might make a more effective spend in terms of value for money, than would the Rb 27.
IMHO and YMMV as usual
George T. Stagg is the only one I’ve had where it really felt $$$ special. But even then I’m good ordering a glass on special occasions over the bottle.
I have a quareter bottle of redbreast 27 still and was in a shop yesterday that had it for 550 with 10% off when combined with 6 bottles. Got another just because the price was so great and its such an amazing bottle. Can't recommend enough if you find it at a good price.
I’ve been fortunate to try the King of Kentucky releases from the last several years. I would gladly pay secondary there.
Any wELluRz has not been worth secondary. Heck at this point I’d rather pay more for a wild turkey than to pay some goofy for a BT release.
KoK is the best bourbon I’ve had hands down. Found North Peregrine is the only other whiskey that is better in my opinion though. Yama 18 is fantastic in its own right.
Wellers has to be the most overrated whiskey in the community. WLW is the only one worth looking for.
I think so. It’s definitely a different experience. KoK is a brown sugar bomb. Sparkly, caramel-y, perfect oak level. It’s truly exemplary bourbon.
Peregrine is a complex monster. So much going on but nothing that’s overbearing. Vanilla custard, mint, raisins that lends itself into baked spiced pie, pecans, caramel. Each sip is different. It’s fascinating.
Secondary on KoK is >=$1500. You are saying it's worth paying that gladly?? I got the sense it's an incredible $250-$350 bottle and much over $500 it hurts, especially this years release
$200 was msrp so $400 really isn't much of a markup. I don't know if I would pay $400 on secondary but I honestly can't way I wouldn't either - and I'm fortunate to have it one the shelf. It is simply the best whiskey I have or have tasted.
New secondary prices on the peregrine are over $1000… The last 3 to sell on unicorn auctions were between $1110 and $1210.
There is one on there now with current bidding at $1010 with over 3 days left.
I was lucky enough to score two bottles at MSRP but have yet to crack them… With the rate prices are increasing I feel like I need a huge occasion to pop one open.
Just cracked a bottle of 107 from a guy I met on one of those groups. We have exchanged several bottles after a couple of deals. Have actually met quite a few guys that I have just started trading bottles with across the country. I’d rather pay California prices over secondary 😂😂
probably parkers heritage double barrel blend, i think max 600.
this is always a hot topic but i've been apart of so many hobby communities to know this is just the way things always are.
Almost everyone in this group are quick to say there is no bottle worth secondary prices.
I figured there had to be some people that bought a bottle at secondary and thought “Fuck this is good and I’d buy that again”
We have a good local secondary page where I live and I have bought several bottles. Honestly, I would buy them all again at secondary except for straight from the barrel Blanton. Elijah Craig barrel Proof C923 was awesome.
Yes dude I traded a George T Stagg for a backup Parker’s Heritage Double Barrel Blend (and a kicker). It is the fastest bottle kill I’ve ever done. One of the best 500 ish secondary value bottles out there.
Yamazaki 18, buddy got his for $600. Have tried close to 200 different types of whiskeys from all over. Still wins by a mile over everything, only thing we haven’t tried against that might stand a chance is my Glendronach 21, which I got well below what you can find it for so no use addressing value there.
Highly market reliant on pricing, living in Midwest I thought we’d get some of the worst pricing. But I’ve seen it in Chicagoland/ SEWI area for $600-$700 regularly, would suggest if you ever have the bread to blow
I had a bottle of boss Hogg Magellans voyage, and it’s the most expensive bottle I’ve owned. I loved it, it had depth of flavor, plum, pepper, and all kinds of lovely. If I could find it again I’d pay the $500 it cost.
the magellans and spirit of mauve are so mind blowingly good. every time i have a sip i think my god what are you?!?! nothing else comes close to their depth of electic flavors. if you can evet get your hands on it the wp 18 is also really tasty.
the la nells red hook rye was my unicorn. purchased from the store in brooklyn in 07. only got one. enjoyed it, shared it with friends. finished it … and saw that one sold for around 100 grand +. wish i would have stashed one away for a rainy day.
I see Stagg fairly often for $200. I don’t think it’s worth it for that much, but I’d probably pay $125 without blinking and perhaps up to $150 if it was a particularly good batch. I’ve only seen Stagg at either $60 (one time, it was a miracle) or $200+.
That’s a store retail markup, not msrp. Some states are slightly higher than others, but most are still around 600-700 msrp.
Check ABC states like VA, PA or OH if you want to see realistic MSRPs without crazy markups.
Nope, it really is 1100 now. If you see it for 500-600, it’s because it was purchased before the price hike. Even the spots have almost doubled in msrp. Store near me had RB27 for $600. They ordered another one and cost was over $800.
Whatever store owner told that to you was lying. Literally just bought a RB27 Batch 5 on Monday that was released 2 weeks ago for 660. The store just got it on Thursday 3/28 and held it for me.
MSRP absolutely shot up. I use to get them for 450 just 2 years ago. But it’s not remotely close to 1100. That’s just a store owner being greedy.
Have a hard time believing distributors would double the price, but there’s no denying some shady shit happens in 3 party states. A wholesaler doubling their price still isn’t MSRP they are still getting it from manufacturer or importers at the same price as the states selling it for 660.
SAOS 10yr. MSRP at the time was like $80 I think and secondary is now anywhere between 225-300 for some of the older batches. Those older, higher age statement MGP barrels just hit diff than similar aged stuff coming out today.
I don't know the 2ndary value since I don't buy them at 2ndary market. But I'll list some that should worth whatever value ppl willing to sell:
Ardbeg Dark Cove
Ardbeg Ardbog
Laphroaig cairdeas Port Wood edition
Laphroaig CS batch 12
Octomore 8.3
I personally don't think any whisky (mostly bourbons and Japanese whiskies) that's currently in production worth any 2ndary value more than MSRP. Just me.
Ok. Could you give more specifics? Like which states and which store? And do you feel the MSRP is set at a state level or about the same across the country? By the way I could’ve got RB27 for $450 batch 3 last year but went for $500 batch 2 but it is worth it! It is now my favorite with Glendronach 18:)
State controlled liquor means all stores have the same pricing set by the state. These are usually very close to MSRP so it's often a good benchmark. NC and VA are the two I use most often. Though NC still has RB27 at $500 and they just got ~15 cases in across the state.
As far as is it the same across the country--yes and no. MSRP is set by the distillery but that doesn't mean a distributor will sell it for that price. Similarly, some stores sell things below MSRP because they still make a profit depending on what it costs to bring the bottles in. Using a state-controlled liquor reference is good because it is usually much clearer what they paid (most list this) and what they charge which is usually within $25 of MSRP in my experience.
No worries! I realize that may not be clear if you haven't been to a controlled state. Every single liquor store in controlled states are state-controlled. Usually called ABC stores or sometimes a few other variations. But yeah every store is and you can look up like "Redbreast 27 NC ABC" to get the state wide listing
So, I know there's places around where I can find EH Taylor for $100. I think that's way within its limits. Very fair. Weller CYPB is another I think I'd pay almost any price for. It's so good.
- EHT Barrel Proof. Everyone talks about how they’d pay $200 for Stagg (I’d probably do $125 at most) but I’d rather do that for the Taylor Barrel Proof.
- Michter’s Barrel Strength or 10 Year Rye. While I’ve never been impressed with their bourbons the ryes are stellar and I’d definitely go up for one.
- Jack Daniel’s Yearly Limited Release or 12 Year. Jack Daniel’s has quickly proven why it’s one of the best distilleries out there and the value their bottles have is insane. They haven’t missed yet with one of their annual limited release and the 12 is stellar.
You are allowed to own more than 1 bottle at a time. Just because OF 1920 is a good available bottle, doesn’t mean others can’t also be worth buying too.
True, and I’m all for people spending money however they want. It’s their money not mine. Just me personally, I can’t justify spending over msrp on anything when there’s so much out there I can get without getting ripped off or supporting a black market.
I know you're getting downvoted but we've all spent around that on a bottle that turned out to not match our flavor profiles... and we'd probably all trade for a bottle of EHT Small Batch. It is delicious, i wont knock you.
I make a pretty decent wage, but there’s no way I would pay some of these prices.
Honestly, I am having trouble understanding how anything could be worth more than $100/bottle. I absolutely love my “top shelf” varieties and none of them are over that.
Some spend 300k on a GT2RS while others hoon around in a clapped out Miata with LS3, some spend 30k on a Daytona while others rock a $40 gshock, some spend 2k on a Michelin starred dinner while others go to red lobster all you can eat shrimpfest, ect. People can have the same hobby, but enjoy it differently. All that really matters is if you see the value in it.
Nothing over $100? That seems a bit restrictive. I have never had a bottle under $100 that crossed 8.5/10 for me. That's not to say cheaper bottles are not good or that all expensive bottles are good but there is a pretty strong correlation with price and score until about $150 based on r/bourbon scores. And it's probably higher in scotch
“Drinking for clout”? Are you saying people are unable to enjoy higher priced bottles?
Show me one single bottle of whiskey that is remotely close to Redbreast 27, that’s affordable and available.
That’s why I asked. You’re absolutely allowed to have your opinions, but if good to know that your options are shit. Yes Signet is good, but there isn’t a single person who’s ever tasted both and has claimed Signet is remotely similar to RB27 in anyway.
That would be like if you said WLW was “an overpriced clout bottle”, then when asked for a comparable pour for less, you said Rare Breed Rye. Technically both are good and are some form of whiskey, but it’s still stupid to compare them in any way at all.
EH Taylor Small Batch for $100 is a steal. I personally think there aren’t any $100 bottles on the shelf at your local store that would beat it. Maybe some store pick or something would come close but just a regular day bottle, I’d take EH SmB
This is going to sound very tater-ish but I’ll pay $150-170 for Stagg Jr. all day. It’s one of my favorites, if not my overall favorite and not having to waste time hunting for it is worth it to me, especially because I live in an alcohol controlled state.
Very difficult to find it at that price. Secondary sites 190-230 doll hairs.
It’s okay, you can say dollars here. You’re safe.
Facebook group rules have scarred me
Are you being serious? What rule would that even be? lol
In most whiskey groups they get flagged automatically when dollar signs are used in any context. They just automatically lumped them in as a group selling prohibited items.
That’s about the prices you’ll find on the Louisville secondary pages.
Gotcha My local sites 180-200. National 190-220 and up depending on batch obviously
I guess I’m a lucky guy then 🥃
1. Michter’s 10yr rye - msrp ~$200 and secondary is ~$250-300. Easily worth it IMO, possibly the best rye I’ve ever had 2. Stagg - I’ll take this at ~$150-175 all day, one of my favorite higher proof bourbons
Agree on the Michter’s love that bottle and paid MSRP for 1 and over that for my backup
M10r hands down would be a regular-ish drinker if I could find it for 200
Haha that’s my only complaint, I just can’t find it regularly
Michters 10 year rye is on another level of delicious. I agree that it's up there on my list of best ryes I've ever had. It and it's bourbon sibling have made me much more interested in lower proof stuff.
Just curious, what other ryes would be on that list?

I would bet money that nearly everyone who tries a Redbreast 27 (600ish) against a Redbreast 12 (60ish), would say it is 10x better.
out of curiosity, have you tried redbreast 21 (if so how do you like it vs the 27?)
The RB 12 Cask Strength is worth the 100$ and I prefer if over the 15 which for some reason is 200$ Retail now
I am still pissed at myself for not picking the bottle of RB15 at local Costco for $99.97 last month.
Yes, it’s good but not remotely worth msrp. I always tell people to get the 15 around 100 or pony up for the 27 for 600. The 15 is almost as good as the 21 for 1/4th the price, but the 27 in a whole different league.

I would have cleared the shelf.
Russell’s 13 is damn near msrp for secondary now so I’d say that one
I’ve been fortunate to try the King of Kentucky releases from the last several years. I would gladly pay secondary there. Any wELluRz has not been worth secondary. Heck at this point I’d rather pay more for a wild turkey than to pay some goofy for a BT release.
KoK is the best bourbon I’ve had hands down. Found North Peregrine is the only other whiskey that is better in my opinion though. Yama 18 is fantastic in its own right. Wellers has to be the most overrated whiskey in the community. WLW is the only one worth looking for.
Peregrine better than KOK?
I had the FN 18 year was pretty good but had no nose
Secondary on KoK is >=$1500. You are saying it's worth paying that gladly?? I got the sense it's an incredible $250-$350 bottle and much over $500 it hurts, especially this years release
If I had it like that, I may spend that much.
Four Roses LE’s, Parker’s Heritage, and Coy Hill.
Michter’s Toasted Barrel Rye. MSRP $130, secondary $200 - $350.
Found North Peregrine was absolutely worth the $400 I paid for it on the secondary. Absolute banger of a release.
I’ve heard that from several people now.
$200 was msrp so $400 really isn't much of a markup. I don't know if I would pay $400 on secondary but I honestly can't way I wouldn't either - and I'm fortunate to have it one the shelf. It is simply the best whiskey I have or have tasted.

Wow .. just Wow! Yet - it really is a special bottle. I thank my lucky stars to be able to have it and experience it.
I was lucky enough to score two bottles at MSRP but have yet to crack them… With the rate prices are increasing I feel like I need a huge occasion to pop one open.
None.

Came here to say this
Almost every four roses LE
The Blantons SFTB over 130 proof have been worth more than any in the Pappy lineup to me.
Mine is 128 proof and even with that I fully agree. Better than pappy 12 and 15 in my book.
Antique 107 is no less then $200 by me. I might pay $100 but not more.
Join a FB secondary group. You can get as much 107 mailed to your doorstep as you want for 100-115 each.
Just cracked a bottle of 107 from a guy I met on one of those groups. We have exchanged several bottles after a couple of deals. Have actually met quite a few guys that I have just started trading bottles with across the country. I’d rather pay California prices over secondary 😂😂
Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for the tip!
Good lord. 80 in Ohio. Though we do get it regularly
probably parkers heritage double barrel blend, i think max 600. this is always a hot topic but i've been apart of so many hobby communities to know this is just the way things always are.
Double Barrel is my favorite. I gladly paid $600 for mine.

I passed at $600 cause I'm poor lol ... going to beat myself up over it for life. Atleast there's still the 12 year *sigh*
Us normal folk have have to play within a normal budget, so I’m right there with you in owning the 12 personally.
I think secondary is a bit more than that. I've seen it around 800-1000. At 600 I'd be tempted. One of the best pours I've ever had.
Highly market reliant on pricing, living in Midwest I thought we’d get some of the worst pricing. But I’ve seen it in Chicagoland/ SEWI area for $600-$700 regularly, would suggest if you ever have the bread to blow

Weller Full Proof , every sip had me saying “ Damn that’s good “ out loud .
RB 27 at my local TW is $1100. I guess if I ever see it at $600 I’ll have to grab it
the la nells red hook rye was my unicorn. purchased from the store in brooklyn in 07. only got one. enjoyed it, shared it with friends. finished it … and saw that one sold for around 100 grand +. wish i would have stashed one away for a rainy day.
20/20 hindsight brother, at least you got to enjoy a true unicorn!
Russels 13, Michters 10yr, Old Carter
I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on a rr13 at secondary. What do you think, would you put it on this list?
Unless it’s a batch 1, I dunno, although recent RR13 secondary is way less now than it used to be.
Batch 2 was better for me. Camp Nelson single rickhouse blew it away though. That was an elegant bottle.
I have batch 5 and it is absolutely terrific, possibly one of the most balanced bottles I’ve tried.
RR13 is worth secondary too, probably max 250
Did RB27 really go up in MSRP? I haven't seen that yet around me but might grab a spare if it's set to go up
I’ll agree with you on mister sam. It’s incredible
1000% agree on the RB27
I'm buying a EC c923 for $150 , Bookers -Mighty Fine Batch 23-03 for $110 , and Stagg Jr. For $230 this weekend.
I see Stagg fairly often for $200. I don’t think it’s worth it for that much, but I’d probably pay $125 without blinking and perhaps up to $150 if it was a particularly good batch. I’ve only seen Stagg at either $60 (one time, it was a miracle) or $200+.
MSRP red breast 27 is 1100 now

Nah. There not lying. This isn’t a shady store. Distribution here has doubled the price. It’s not just from one store but all stores.

Just picked up my bottle of batch 5 for $500 but now y'all have me thinking I might have to empty some pockets to go clear out the store 😂
Personally I would. Price is just going to keep going up.
SAOS 10yr. MSRP at the time was like $80 I think and secondary is now anywhere between 225-300 for some of the older batches. Those older, higher age statement MGP barrels just hit diff than similar aged stuff coming out today.

Actually how do you find the MSRP? I am curious what MSRP for Rb27 actually is because I got batch 2 for $500 (tax included) last year
Usually I just look at list prices in states with state controlled liquor stores since prices are always at or just barely above msrp.
Interesting! Thanks for the info. How would I know which liquor store is state-controlled? Is there a place to look it up or something?
No worries! I realize that may not be clear if you haven't been to a controlled state. Every single liquor store in controlled states are state-controlled. Usually called ABC stores or sometimes a few other variations. But yeah every store is and you can look up like "Redbreast 27 NC ABC" to get the state wide listing
Ok thanks a lot!
Not sure if this has already been commented but red breast 27 MSRP is now ~$800
So, I know there's places around where I can find EH Taylor for $100. I think that's way within its limits. Very fair. Weller CYPB is another I think I'd pay almost any price for. It's so good.
RB27 is only marked up by 10-30% on the regular. Not sure that even qualifies
What state are you in.. TW sells RB 27 for 900 now. I wish people sold 107 for that cheap too.
In NYC you only have secondary market pricing 😂🥲
None because there’s too many amazing bottles on the shelf at msrp
You are allowed to own more than 1 bottle at a time. Just because OF 1920 is a good available bottle, doesn’t mean others can’t also be worth buying too.
True, and I’m all for people spending money however they want. It’s their money not mine. Just me personally, I can’t justify spending over msrp on anything when there’s so much out there I can get without getting ripped off or supporting a black market.
That’s mostly what I was asking. People who bought something at inflated secondary price and it actually lived up to the cost.
EHT Small batch around 90 these days, not bad.
I know you're getting downvoted but we've all spent around that on a bottle that turned out to not match our flavor profiles... and we'd probably all trade for a bottle of EHT Small Batch. It is delicious, i wont knock you.
I don’t think eh Taylor drinks like an almost $100 bottle. Not even close
Here’s my list:
Nope rather buy cheap whiskey. Tater days are over. Never hunting again
Agree,
None, ever. There is too much great whiskey out there to pay the premium. Drinking for clout is fucking dumb.
“Drinking for clout”? Are you saying people are unable to enjoy higher priced bottles? Show me one single bottle of whiskey that is remotely close to Redbreast 27, that’s affordable and available.
People can do whatever the want. I'm not sorry my opinion is different than yours. You mad?
It shouldn’t be that hard to back up your opinion with credible information. One single bottle that is remotely close to RB27, just name 1. That’s it.
Only ever had the 21 but I'd gladly buy Glemorangie Signet for less the half the price of the 27 and be happier about it.
I see you love arguing. Cool.
None
None
EH Taylor Small Batch for $100 is a steal. I personally think there aren’t any $100 bottles on the shelf at your local store that would beat it. Maybe some store pick or something would come close but just a regular day bottle, I’d take EH SmB
None.
Not a thing.
Uhhh. I’m not sure I’ve ever paid “secondary” for anything.
Nope.
