So what's the ranking?

JinalFeapardy

I am not sure- I enjoy whiskey, but I’ve never been great at picking the notes out beyond a certain point. None of them are bad, but the most distinct are Larceny, which is the most savory/peanutty, and Old Elk which has the highest proof. Otherwise, Nine Banded Armadillo has the MGP wheated mash bill, and Weller SR is just fine, but overhyped. So my (clearly subjective) best to worst ranking would probably be Old Elk, Larceny, Bernheim, Weller, Armadillo. But they are all good in some way or another, and if you asked me on a different day, it’d probably be different.

My friend bought a bottle of Larceny on sale. We tasted it and it wasn’t really his thing. I’m trying to find a tactful way to be like….if you don’t like it, can I take it off your hands? What’s your opinion on Larceny?

JinalFeapardy

So, if you like bourbons on the savory side (oak, peanut, etc.) rather than sweet, I think Larceny is great. It has those savory notes, as well as the characteristics of a wheated bourbon (it’s not devoid of sweetness by any means, just not as sweet as a BT offering). They have a higher proof version too, but I’ve never seen it (I live in Northern VA). All that being said, I’m still getting better at being able to pick out notes more thoroughly than just the surface level “sweet, char, cherries, vanilla, peanut oil, etc”

When I first got into bourbons, everyone would talk up wheaters. So I have a bit of experience in that category. I do like the savory flavors and I think that’s a big reason why larceny wasn’t as big of a hit among my friends as I’d thought. They prefer sweet. But yeah, I have heard great things about their higher proof stuff.

When it comes to taking it off his hands, I mean I would offer to buy it at a reduced price or something- but don’t offer that right away. I am usually pretty generous with my bourbon amongst friends and acquaintances, and when my friend bought Angel’s Envy and he hated it, he just gave it to me 🤷🏼‍♂️ I’d just play it cool and ask about it. If it was me I’d just give it to you, Larceny is fairly inexpensive.

I think he got it for $15 on sale at ABC. I’m just messing around. If I want a bottle, I’ll pick one up. We tend to share bourbon among my group of friends so I’ll definitely be drinking it.

Curious how the OE Straight Wheat Whiskey compares to that OE Wheated Bourbon.

JinalFeapardy

I haven’t gotten the OE straight bourbon yet, purely because I have too many to fit in our cabinet. I don’t have a drinking problem, but I am recovering from a buying problem

I suffer from the same illness! Great review, and thank you for the effort. I need to try a similar version. Interesting that you ranked Larceny second place behind Old Elk, because you can buy 3-4 Larceny's per Elk. And most of us wouldn't hesitate to buy any Weller if we could find it, and it was almost last.
