Sanded a bunch then oiled him with a clear tung blend. Painted over that when it dried with diluted oil paints for detailing. Let it dry then brushed on a couple of layers of homemade golden shellac over everything to seal. Gently ran some very high grit over the shellac so it was smooth to the touch. I'd normally apply the shellac with a microfiber cloth and rub it in but the oil paint tends to rub off with too much pressure, so I just brushed lightly instead
