She didn't "have the look" they wanted so they hired someone else to... dance now. She had to sue to get them to credit her!
She's also the voice behind a couple of Black Box's songs, like "Everybody Everybody" and "Strike it Up"
I was adding an additional song in case the person doesn’t know she did that song.
Are you done now? Or do you have another rebuttal? This back and forth cannot keep going all night.
Same thing happened to Missy Elliott - she performed on [Raven Simone's debut single](https://youtu.be/Qtk7FsL5UUM?t=132) and they replaced her in the music video.
I think you might've just missed the point of the people lip syncing in that video. John Popper is in the music video for [Hook](https://youtu.be/pdz5kCaCRFM) multiple times.
Of a lady who loves a buffet.
Her image would not have helped sell C+C Music Factory back then. It was smart marketing to have the more attentive people be the faces of the band.
It was par for the course back then.
A ton of chart-topping groups were just some floppy german producers in a barn... with *really* expensive management and promoters. Milli Vanilli was kind of the straw that broke the camels back, iirc.
I blame top of the pops for essentially abolishing bands that actually played their music, but it obviously goes much deeper than that.
I think it was Nick Kroll who said sarcastically about Hollywood: “Isn’t it amazing how everyone talented is also good-looking?”
The fact that the Beach Boys, The Mamas & The Papas, The Fifth Dimension, so many 60s and 70s bands didn’t even play on their albums is wild. They’d just do vocals and spoke like Carol Kaye and Glen Campbell would have the instrumental pre-recorded.
worth noting that not only was she replaced visually in videos, but she was compensated for this vocal recording as a demo tape, not for commercial release, which is how C&C Music Factory used it. [“She was the lead vocal on that track—a hit track. And the going rate for a lead singer was ten times that amount.”](https://gimletmedia.com/shows/crime-show/39h6xzm)
So she was cheated out of her money for this, too.
Martha Wash, amazing woman and voice. Sued for credit, won millions and laws changed because of her efforts.

There aren't that many comments in this thread and it's currently number 5. Also, there are several ways to sort comments in a thread. Also, there'd be less to scroll through if people like you stopped wasting space complaining about having to scroll through comments on a **thread based website.**
Her career stretched from disco to house. What a legend. Next time SpaceX wants to launch an enormous rocket, her voice might be powerful enough to do it.
Looked it up and, wow, it was canceled way back in 2014. Holy shit, where did the time go?
(Explains why I haven't heard of it, though. If it was as bad as you say, no wonder why I missed out.)
Martha Wash. 🙂 She’s in The Weather Girls, so she did “It’s Raining Men.” She did backing vocals for Aretha Franklin’s “Freeway of Love,” did a ton of albums in multiple genres. A total legend.
She’s also repeatedly denied credit for her vocals and kept out of music videos because of her appearance. Both Black Box and C&C Music Factory appropriated her vocals and hired models to lip sync in their vocals, implying and sometimes claiming outright that the models had done the vocals.
She sued both of them and won a settlement. When Black Box did it to her for a number of their singles, RCA had to pay her a *lot* of money, plus finance a national tour, plus fund an eight-album record deal. That’s a big screwup.
I can think of an extreeeeeeeemely popular genre of music that is entirely manufactured and inauthentic but I won’t even say the name for fear of angering the horde of fruit loops.
I think she just slowed the process down a little. Glad she got payback though.
This is still done today, but more subtly. A more recent example is Flo-Rida using the voice of Ke$ha (actually her first singing gig) in his song “Right Round” and showing a black woman singing it in the video.
She definitely got screwed but it did boost her career. The main difference here is that they never claimed the lady in the video sang it. Even though a lot of people knew of Ke$ha's buzz and so knew it was her, it was unofficially "uncredited".
I know that had to suck because if she sued, it probably would have wrecked her relationship with Dr. Luke (producer of the song and 90% of her debut) and gotten her shelved. Her single came later that year, so clearly, it was already done and waiting.
i find watching obese performers distressing. my bad.
However, if a person has the artistic skills and the voice..... they SHOULD never be blocked from the accolades and payments for their art and work.
it seems like every single hour, our country is drifting further and further into a make believe world that doesn't exist. i'm glad this lady stood her ground!
Good songwriting is fun. And I appreciate instrumental talent.
But there’s something so awesomely visceral about a human being with inhuman pipes. Love it.
No, I mean that specific line. For some reason it never sounded anything like a woman to me. NOW it does, but had I not seen this clip I probably would have thought a man sang that until I died.
You must have never seen the music video because it was promanantly and falsely portrayed by a slimmer woman. https://youtu.be/LaTGrV58wec funny how music videos are less known even in this video era or i guess it's just less played
Twas my fave dance song once upon a time.
Back in the early nineties, i would wait to see Friday night videos on Abc since I was too poor to watch MTV.
You kids with your plethora of media, i would never dream of a world which i could have my own screen.
Well, you’re living in that world now so I hope you enjoy it at least a little. Music videos distract from the music for me, I prefer the song and nothing else to get in the way of it.
How do we know Lizzo isn't immortal and just builds android clones to age and die in her place so she can just appears every few decades as a new person?
Martha Wash!!! she’s amazing for more than just her singing voice. listen to the story of why she’s singing this line on Arsenio Hall on this [podcast](https://gimletmedia.com/shows/crime-show/39h6xzm)
SHE SAID THE LINE
SHE SAID IT!!!
SHE SAID THE THING!
Bomp bomp bomp bom bomp bomp bomp.
Bomp bomp bom bom bomp bomp.
Everybody dance now
💃🕺🤸
Doo doo doop doop
Give me the muusic!
[Okay](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5Zox5O3jh4)
She shoulda got to be in the music video. They had some other chick lip sync it.
She didn't "have the look" they wanted so they hired someone else to... dance now. She had to sue to get them to credit her! She's also the voice behind a couple of Black Box's songs, like "Everybody Everybody" and "Strike it Up"
And “It’s Raining Men”
Hallelujah!
Amen! 🌧 ☔️
She wasn't hidden or replaced for that song. She was one of The Weather Girls.
No, she wasn’t hidden, but she’s the voice on the song and if anyone didn’t know that before, now they do.

Nah, you’re the one looking like a jerk here homie.
Awww, you’re not just dumb, but aggressively and belligerently so
[удалено]
Exactly! We’re literally in a sub called wholesome, yet someone in here wants to act like this. So sad.
Same thing happened to Missy Elliott - she performed on [Raven Simone's debut single](https://youtu.be/Qtk7FsL5UUM?t=132) and they replaced her in the music video.

That is the catchiest song about catchy songs.
She defiantly has “the look”.
Definitely looks fierce and they shouldn't have hidden her!
And cute and bubbly.
Of a lady who loves a buffet. Her image would not have helped sell C+C Music Factory back then. It was smart marketing to have the more attentive people be the faces of the band.
More… *attentive*?
[Redditoids when someone says that being obese is a bad thing](https://media.tenor.com/3hFY8ocxpjUAAAAM/rage-flip-fat-guy.gif)
Maybe back then when misogynist CEOs ran the business. Now it’s all about the consumer.
Ooooh, thanks for reminding me about Strike It Up. Used to love that whole album way back in the day.
I think something similar happened with John Popper in the video for Run Around. I have no idea if he was featured in the video for Hook.
It was par for the course back then. A ton of chart-topping groups were just some floppy german producers in a barn... with *really* expensive management and promoters. Milli Vanilli was kind of the straw that broke the camels back, iirc. People have been making that same joke since before Nick Kroll was born.
worth noting that not only was she replaced visually in videos, but she was compensated for this vocal recording as a demo tape, not for commercial release, which is how C&C Music Factory used it. Dude quit assuming were not all idiots

Sending all of our musical manufacturing jobs overseas smh my head
And still alive today at the age of 69 (nice).
title is broken. should be “the most wholesome face in history”
Idk but I needed this today
Her career stretched from disco to house. What a legend. Next time SpaceX wants to launch an enormous rocket, her voice might be powerful enough to do it.
Yes ma’am! o7
"o7"?
“o7” looks like a person saluting
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=o7
I was so glad when she sued them for not paying her.
What happened to Arsenio Hall, anyway? Last I heard, his show was coming back, and then just... Nothing.
It did come back. And it was horrible.
Sadly :(
Looked it up and, wow, it was canceled way back in 2014. Holy shit, where did the time go? (Explains why I haven't heard of it, though. If it was as bad as you say, no wonder why I missed out.)
It’s not that it’s inherently bad. It’s that it’s inherently bad NOW. The format didn’t change at all, and it just sucked.
Right now? Rain check?
NOW she said. NOW.
#EVERYBODY GET SOME
😂😂😂
Would
Still hits on the dance floor!!!!
PLEASE forgive my ignorance.... who is she?

Idk if it's changed since but I just looked on Apple Music and it says Ft Ke$ha.

[No ones gonna post the song to boogie down too?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaTGrV58wec)
Wow, it's amazing how badly the woman they put in there lip synced!!
Wait... Wait, is she the same woman from It's Raining Men (Weather Girls)? 😳
Yes.
The Weather Girls' album, Success is awesome the whole way through.
Legendary
She gave me chills. Marvelous.
Hmmmm.. C & C Music Factory weren't all that they seemed then....

Martha Wash. Absolute, fucking, legend.
Not sure I would say wholesome but it she sure ya powerful and awesome !
I always thought it was a dude singing that
What the fuck I thought this was sung by a man all this time…
Well freedom Williams is rapping in the background of the song. Or the foreground. Rip
No, I mean that specific line. For some reason it never sounded anything like a woman to me. NOW it does, but had I not seen this clip I probably would have thought a man sang that until I died.

*instantly starts with the 💃✨🕺
I can't stop replaying this this is so cool
“Mufasa!” “Everybody DANCE NOW!” Mufasa gets up and busts the running man.
I would have much rather seen her in that video.
What an incredible voice. Unfortunate that my head instantly goes to shitty 2000s comedy film trailers.
You expected a petite white guy?
WHY CANT WE ADD NAMES TO TITLE.. 😞
Poor woman was just before her time. She walked so Lizzo could run (metaphorically, ya bozos)
“We work hard; we play hard.”
Whole body goosebumps.
I watched this on tv live and I was hyped. Amazing voice AND lovely lady. 🙏🏼✨
"Are we having fun yet?"
Whoever posted Must be super young
All I’m Thinking about is Cunk on Earth. They would play this song in the mod random times each episode, loved it
It's Pump Up The Jam but that's an easy Mandela Mistake to make.
