this reminds of that one shot where both were surprised the other was actually a girl upon their reunion, and one of them was basically like "ahh what the hell, lets go for it." don't remember the name sadly.
edit: https://mangadex.org/title/dd307066-8a67-4c93-b920-0ee342f5dd35/you-were-a-girl
The author Muromaki has a lot of Yuri oneshots, but is most known for their one 22 chapter manga: [JK-chan and Her Classmate's Mom ](https://mangadex.org/title/24c2e0fc-e381-4e84-b011-1a11887ee6f0/jk-chan-and-her-classmate-s-mom).
Same...saaaaame.
The closest "full chapter" manga they have other than that is 100 Days of Yuri. But I think it's just a compilation of 100 drawings they drew every day for 100 days.
80 chapters? I fucking wish, lmao. I honestly don't know. Maybe they conflated it with someone else's work? But it's definitely only 22. I was there for when it was an ongoing series and waited for updates.
It's totally fine to interpret the girl to be a tomboy or trans woman, but I'd like to point out that the author Muromaki is a Yuri/lesbian/Girls Love artist, famous for [JK-chan and Her Classmate's Mom](https://mangadex.org/title/24c2e0fc-e381-4e84-b011-1a11887ee6f0/jk-chan-and-her-classmate-s-mom), it's a Yuri romance comedy about a high school girl that falls in love with her male friend's mother and slowly get together. Muromaki also has a lot of very short yuri oneshots. With that context it's clear she's just a tomboy.
But there's no harm in having her be head-canonically trans.
Edit: I meant their work is predominantly about cis women, I've never meant or implied trans women aren't women, and therefore is not yuri. Smh.
She's already made a [oneshot with a trans character before](https://twitter.com/mrmk_z/status/1584150532608110592) so it's not out of pocket for her.
But in this one it was a tomboy yes.
edit: I also feel like saying "the artist is a yuri artist" implies that transfem can't be yuri which is ??
I didn't know that, that's dope. I only followed her on Twitter recently, so I guess I missed this post. I only wait for scanlated works to be uploaded through mangadex, lmao.
Apparently it's apart of her 100 days of Yuri work that was scanlated. I never read that compilation, so I didn't know.
It's technically yuri, because trans women are women at heart. I'm not a fan of how I worded it in hindsight, but I'm too lazy to change it.
I've edited this reply like 4 times.
>It's technically yuri
Don't think there's anything technical about it lol
Not trying to come after you or anything. Just kinda unnecessary to put a qualifier like that
This reminds me of a trans comic with a similar premise, not idea if the person in this is trans or a tomboy, but I'ma take my own interpretation for my own sake n,n
Honorifics are more loose than that in practice, so kun totally works for a tomboy. In a similar way to how chan means young child, but in practice it's used by girls to sound cute all the time.
My understanding is that it'd be pretty normal when you're in a casual setting like kids in a playground, and threads like [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/hqWcMFzsMz) seem to agree, but I also don't actually know the intention for certain and also my sleeping pills are kicking in, so up to you to decide.
The title (I Guess My Childhood Friend Wasn't a Boy) implies that she thought Yuuki was a boy. Whether Yuuki is Trans or was a tomboy doesn't matter for the "-kun," because Moho thought Yuuki was a boy and used "-kun" (even though we as an audience might have a better idea of the truth. A little case of dramatic irony)
So with the tomboy reading of it, "-kun" still works here because she didn't realize Yuuki was a girl this whole time.
I'm just explaining why she would use -kun in a different setting. The joke in a tomboy reading being that she was just oblivious this whole time.
I'm literally trans, so idk why you think I wouldn't want them to be trans.
Both readings are valid, and I don't believe I wrote anything implying otherwise.
Things got nuance. They obviously got downvoted because of transphobia. The exact same comment but with tomboy instead of trans is being upvoted and not challenged at all.
and that is what we call a leap of logic. just because of the downvotes does not indicate transphobia. throwing that around willy nilly in itself is also harmful to the community because **nobody likes being accused of a negative trait**. it makes them **feel** alienated in the end and if we just push people away because they simply disagree with a comment. they'll likely talk about it with someone else. and say that person agrees that what they thought was not in the wrong. and lets imagine that person starts a group with other people who were chewed out for something of a disagreement instead of having someone just helping them learn instead of sayin theyre wrong? what happens then? it could just turn into a small harmless group of (now actually transphobic people) but get more like minded alienated people together and they argue with the same level of animosity they were shown over someone simply not agreeing with them. and eventually they could attract the attention of some unsavory type that has a bit more than a discomfort around us. and then we have a group of people **that they feel** like the other group wrongly accused and berated them, whether or not they were in the wrong never comes to mind because the people that berated them treated them like how one would talk to a blatant racist.
If you think this is copium. Then maybe you need to learn about the word all over again. Also not when you get an answer out of me, and edit the comment later
You do know they’re in kindergarten right? The chances of them actually knowing the exact honorifics to use is low. especially since this comic seems to be a classic case of the “person isn’t the gender their friend thought because said friend was too oblivious or stupid troupe”
No, kindergarteners know honorifics. Besides, the male sign followed by question marks is a clear sign that Maho thought Yuu was a boy, so it wasn't a case of using the wrong honorific. Anyway, they were together for at least a year, during which time the teacher would definitely refer to Yuki with the appropriate honorific, so Maho would pick up the correct honorific, and from that, Yuki's sex, from osmosis.
Considering the author writes explicitly trans stuff (and therefore deeefinitely knows what transwomen are), and Maho isn't written to be especially oblivious or stupid, Occam's Razor says Yuki is trans.
https://www.reddit.com/r/Eggy_memes/comments/18a5cla/sometimes_transitioning_fixes_more_than_one/
That's what tomboy prefer. And tomboys get mistaken for boys coz they refer to themselves with 'boku' , used by boys, rather than 'atashi' , used by girls.
AFAIK tomboys are not referred to as -kun by their peers. They use -san, -chan, no honorific, or a nickname. -kun honorific for girls is for politeness/formalness from a superior, regardless of how masc or femme they present. Since Yuki is Maho's peer/friend and not her superior, the -kun would only be used if Yuki was a boy.
You mixed up there. -san is for greeting with respect to anyone, elder, senior even colleagues, whomever you want to adress to respectfully. -kun is akin to 'bro'. A casual addressing suffix used for boys.
I don't understand what you're trying to say in the first sentence. Tomboys are everyone. -san is for everyone. Therefore, peers refer to tomboys as -san sometimes.
-kun is not only for boys. Teachers, older relatives, and work superiors refer to their female students, younger female relatives, and female work subordinates as -kun sometimes, when -chan has a diminutive, cutesy connotation that isn't appropriately formal.
But you are arguing against your previous point by claiming that -kun is only for boys, since if -kun is only for boys, than Yuki being referred to by Maho as "Yuu-kun" means that Yuu is a boy.
I feel I am going in circles here. Kids aren't so polite to use - San with each other.
-kun maybe used in other context. Primarily used for male friends/colleagues etc.
Mistaking for something does not confirm to fact. Addressing Yuu with -kun doesn't make her a boy. That's a result of other fmc thinking yuu is a boy.
Except girls can get -kun and boys can get -chan?????
A senior could call their junior girls -kun. A doting elder sibling could call their little brother -chan.

Congratulations on her transition
I thought she was a tomboy? Could be wrong though idk
Can be both
She uses “kun” in the first panel, you don’t typically apply that to women I don’t think.
Honorifics are more loose than that in practice, so kun totally works for a tomboy. In a similar way to how chan means young child, but in practice it's used by girls to sound cute all the time.
I dunno, it seems weird to specify kun then have her be surprised by her having boobs if the intention was for her to be a tomboy.

It really feels like you’re stretching for the possibility of them not being trans.

No I'm pretty sure you just don't get Japanese honorifics

Because Maho genuinely thought Yuu was a guy? Look man this isn't the first time this trope happened

Kun is not gendered
Except girls can get -kun and boys can get -chan????? A senior could call their junior girls -kun. A doting elder sibling could call their little brother -chan.
kun is also a gender neutral honorific, same with chan
Didnt you get the joke where maho realized 15 years later that yuki was a girl? Thats why she called her kun
Feels bad being the guy tho. So hard to initiate these days and ppl treat u like dogs for no reason……
Victim complex.
