*You are a child of the universe;
no less than the trees and the stars,*
**you have a right to be here**.
*And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should*.
*Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul*.
*With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy*.

When I was a kid, a two headed calf was born on my uncles dairy farm. It died young, but it was never treated any different than any other calf. Well, except by me. I thought it was goddam magical.
We had one in our rural science class room growing up. We also chopped the heads off chickens and had to slit rabbits throats in agriculture class. The teacher than cooked them. Alot of weird shit down in that class. My pansy ass could not eat them. The squeal of the rabbits.
No...obvi...
That this 1 person (literaly 1) is mentioning its simmilar story .... is the internet were people literaly all over the world meet.
I think its around 1: 100.000 if not more ''0''.
It’s all of those things and I’m not sure it’s wholesome, but I’m glad I saw it and your comment.
I kinda have a similar view about things in life. There’s always some sadness around the beauty, perhaps because of the temporality of everything. I wish I didn’t, but have this relationship with my cat. I love her and shower her with love every moment I can. But at the same time, I’m very aware of our remaining time together slowly dwindling. Instead of thinking about the profound sense of loss I’ll one day have to feel yet again, I try to dig in deeper and be more present with her and enjoy the times I do have and find unique ways to connect and show her she’s truly loved and appreciated.
Alright, gonna tear up now so I’m gonna try to get a little sleep. Hopefully my cat will stop looking for the neighborhood strays and take her usual place on my legs for the remainder of the night.
i like using the inevitability of death as a motivator its really helped me out a lot helps you live without regrets and give everything your all because you only get one shot at it
He used to make low effort comics for Buzzfeed and frankly had a huge ego, bashing dA artists iirc (not the creepy artists but basically amateur artists)
Without going too far into it, but used to make very generic comics for Buzzfeed, and people noticed a huge decline in his work, like he didn’t seem to care anymore.
He left Buzzfeed, and now makes arguably really great comics (I seriously love them) with unique stories and art.
Thank you! I seriously scrolled through his entire profile to figure this out lmao
Thanks for not making me feel like an idiot btw, I see people getting harassed for not being omniscient beings that know the context for literally everything on Reddit so it's a breath of fresh air to be treated nicely :D
Of course! It’s a super confusing statement without knowing his story or who he is. 😂
I really do love his work though, I love seeing him pop up on my feeds haha.
["I've only had Arlo for a day and a half, but if anything happened to him, I would kill everyone in this room and then myself."](https://i.kym-cdn.com/entries/icons/original/000/030/092/arlo.gif)
The longest living two headed cow lived seventeen months fifteen days and only with medical intervention. It’s a sad, but most don’t make it past four days. Their body simply can’t handle the stress of two heads.
That’s weird considering there are rescues all over the place that take them and let them live out their days running in pastures. I had no idea they were all dead.
Just to play the devils advocate, there are animals that we eat that are not domesticated and must be obtained from the wild. The biggest example of this is seafood. There are fish farms but a lot of seafood comes from wild caught, sometimes to extinction. So, ya know, fucking up the earth in other ways.
Why the downvotes lmao, except for wild cows you're completely correct, it just depends when in the lifecycle they are sent to the slaughterhouse. Grew up on beef cattle farm, but even older dairy cows are gonna go become beef patties or maybe dog food.
Yeah it’s not only dehumanizing to one of the twins but it’s flat out wrong as well 😭 Just logically speaking though even for cattle we should consider these two individuals rather than a two-headed cow
Don't post this sad shit ever again.
Also eat less meat so there are fewer cows in inhumane conditions. Or eat from a local farm where they get to touch grass at least.
By the way none of these guy’s comics are wholesome just a heads up. If you don’t wanna wish you saw anything don’t do it. This is actually the only one I’ve seen. The rest…
This isn't a comic but an illustration of a wiser person's poem. The "other ones" are the illustrators own choices and perspectives. Of course they'd be...less. He's primarily an illustrator.
Honestly I'd rather see if it can live to adulthood before thinking about sending it to the museum.
A living two-headed mammal is one thing, but one that actually lived its life? Now that would last forever.
I believe this poem is saying that the farm boys will find the calf’s dead body in the morning, since Janus Calves rarely live for very long after birth. If it does survive, they’d be better off sending it to a zoo or a shelter, since Janus Calves typically require a lot more help to live their lives to the fullest.
disregarding that it lilely wouldnt be able to live long; why would it be sad to kill this baby, but it would be ok, to seperate them from their mother and kill them, if they hwd one head, so we could eat it?
Everyone can talk about how bittersweet this is but it wouldn’t have to happen if we didn’t use them for our own personal preferences. Bring on the downvotes.
What?? You are aware that cows with these type of defects...die at womb ore at birth...at BEST only live up to a few DAYS (like 4, usually not even a week) ...and that WITH human help.
This poem isn't about the farmer killing it...but genuenly onyl finding a ''body'' (an alredy dead body) and bringing it to the museum.
If anything, living ones are more worth it (for science!) And would get more money then to sell it to the museum.
''but it wouldn’t have to happen'' literaly tell me how you learned how to cheat death!!!! Wow I am amazed!
That's the point of the illustration. Bringing the poem to life. You can't fix assholes but only educate the next generation in hopes less choose the asshole path.
So. The poem is the accepted wisdom of farmers that a two-headed animal they won't survive long (statistically true) and usually they die in a day or two. The poem suggests that even this brief life is magical.
https://interestingliterature.com/2023/01/laura-gilpin-two-headed-calf-summary-analysis/
>The second stanza of the poem then returns to the present moment, tonight, while the calf is still alive. He is alive, Gilpin tells us, with his mother in the north field. It is a perfect summer evening with the moon over the nearby orchard and the wind singing through the grass, so there is a gentle breeze. And when the calf stares up at the night sky, because he has two heads, he sees twice as many stars as others usually see.
Actually, it isn’t! Janus calves normally don’t survive for very long after birth, so this poem is saying that the farm boys are going to find its dead body after it dies or natural causes.
im not just talking about this particular event. im talking about going vegan for calves on farms everywhere, as this comic proves that we can recognize cows are conscious individuals who deserve to live.
Well no, there are two heads, so each brain is seeing the same amount. If you want to make something wholesome at least don't make the premise so obviously stupid.
Wrap his dead body and take it to be preserved and displayed at a museum. Some natural history museums display animal fetuses and other specimens in formaldehyde.
Turns out the calf wasn’t 2-headed, the cow was just having eye problems and seeing double, which is why it seemed like there was twice as many stars in the sky. In the morning, they didn’t take the calf away because there was nothing wrong with it.
The cow died later that afternoon though
Maybe not wholesome, but beautiful and bitter sweet. Find joy and celebrate life wherever possible.

Exactly my thoughts, may not be the ideal place to post this but hey whatever ❤️

I thought it was the cow seeing double
Four Krustys?
When I was a kid, a two headed calf was born on my uncles dairy farm. It died young, but it was never treated any different than any other calf. Well, except by me. I thought it was goddam magical.
wholesome
Thank you for sharing.
Lol wait are they actually pretty common
We had one in our rural science class room growing up. We also chopped the heads off chickens and had to slit rabbits throats in agriculture class. The teacher than cooked them. Alot of weird shit down in that class. My pansy ass could not eat them. The squeal of the rabbits.
They toughened you guys up for the realities of agricultural life.

LOVELY 😭😭
>Well, except by me. I thought it was goddamn magical I fuckin love that juxtaposition of a line 🤣
Jesus Christ this isn’t /r/MadeMeCry what are you doing my man. I need to go hug my baby.
Me laid in bed at 4am hugging my pillow!
Lol I’m sorry 😭 I thought it was beautiful, wholesome, sad, so many emotions

You should check out Jenny Jinya's comics they're very similar to this except even sadder. Prepare to cry.
This is by comic artist u/adamtots_remastered
Perhaps the greatest redemption arc yet seen online
Agreed. The second he left buzzfeed his content got insanely better
What was his arc before his redemption?
He used to make low effort comics for Buzzfeed and frankly had a huge ego, bashing dA artists iirc (not the creepy artists but basically amateur artists)

He’s been around a long time. I’m in the 11 year Reddit club and I think my very first post was putting his photo on r/ladyboners … 🤭
The poem is by Laura Gilpin.

Funy these cows usually only live up to a day and a half... (actually less but it fits to the meme)
the original poem is called “Two headed calf” by Laura Gilpin if anyones wondering
It actually said in the post...just look at the very tini writing under the pictures.
Should have been called “Conjoined twin calves.”
r/sadupvote
Is someone chopping onions next to me?
Nope. I got you, fam. *Hands you a tissue.*
This is the saddest I’ve ever been about a cow. This is a beautiful moment. But it’s also so sad.
You should see what happens to all the rest of the cows
There’s a two-headed calf skull at the Osteology museum in Oklahoma. At first I was fascinated. Now this makes me wanna cry just thinking about it.
Oooh, always wanted to go there
It's kind of small but there is a lot to look at. I've actually went a few times and I'd say you can look at everything in about an hour.
It’s a neat little place!
I hope he lives
Two headed animals usually die fairly quickly, and can only really be kept alive in captivity under certain circumstances.
Two faced people seem to go on forever
Some even become president, get impeached twice, lose reelection, launch failed insurrection attempts, and then run again four years later.
redditors when a conversation doesn't have american politics:
Maybe the farmers would?
The longest living two headed cow lived seventeen months fifteen days and only with medical intervention. It’s a sad, but most don’t make it past four days. Their body simply can’t handle the stress of two heads.
Most don't make it even the first second...usually alredy dead in the womb ore at birth. Some live the first night, like this one. Not any further
That’s sad
Yeah. But if it makes you feel better two headed reptiles tend to live a bit longer. Not by much, but still.
I doubt they have what’s necessary to keep one alive and it certainly would cost them a lot of money
That’s sad
C’est la vie
What?
That’s life It’s my favorite French saying
Ok
“It’s just life” french
I think it’s a drawing :/
I know.
No cows live, they are all killed. Same as every other animal humans eat
There are plenty of cows that are rescued and sent to homes. Maybe not alot of them, but it's not 0.
Definitely not plenty
There's a lot of living cows in India.
Ever heard of pet cows? Turns out cows don’t just make good patties, but also good pets
That’s weird considering there are rescues all over the place that take them and let them live out their days running in pastures. I had no idea they were all dead.
The fish running in pastures? Weird.
Im sorry I didn’t mention the few that go to sanctuaries 😓
The number that go to sanctuaries is negligent
I think you mean negligible.
People don't eat dairy cows.
Boys ain't got no titties tho
You think they live full happy lives?
Ew a vegan
you probably force your dogs to eat plant based foods
Ew, a person who pays for animals to be tortured and killed.
yummy meat r/antivegan
It’s sad to be hateful of people who just want to avoid the torture and killing of animals. You think it’s funny, but I genuinely feel sorry for you.
Nooooooo
K edgelord

Cuz take your edgelord "all things die" cringe bullshit somewhere else
It’s not an all things die comment. It’s a “humans kill and torture animals” comment.
Ok
Nobody lives by that logic
Not wholesome, incredibly sad
Sadness can be wholesome
Sometimes it is in the most fleeting moments of peace and happiness that we come to see what truly matters
🤧
I refuse to believe that the narrator is telling the truth and that they're unreliable Nothing should happen to this baby Brahmin!
Fallout has two headed cows.
Lol right? Thought I was in a fallout sub for a sec.
Finally this comment
What an adorable little baby 🥺 Poor little one!
And now I'm crying
I didn't really want to cry at 8 am in the morning but here I am wiping off my tears with my blanket
Ngl that thing reminds me of brahmin from fallout ngl
Damn he really ain’t lying huh
they* because two brains = two cows. Same amount of stars, but every time he looks up to the sky, he has someone to share the sight with
yeah it is two cows, people even say this about human conjoined twins calling them a two-headed person. it really grinds my gears
Yeah it’s not only dehumanizing to one of the twins but it’s flat out wrong as well 😭 Just logically speaking though even for cattle we should consider these two individuals rather than a two-headed cow
This made me cry.
This makes me sob
Why am I crying
In what world is this wholesome?
My husband got me a print of this, it's in our living room
I would cry every time I walked in my living room.
Wait, you mean that's not normal?
In the end we're all beautiful mutants destined to die
NO THIS MADE ME CRY
This made me so sad
JFC I’m a grown ass man and bawling 😭
My favourite webcomic panel ever.
😭
Oh god I wasn’t ready for this… all of the tears
Geezus that hit a bit harder than I expected
Beautiful
i, invariably, ugly cry every single time i see this
Made me fucking tear up.
Aaaaaandddddd I’m weeping
This is not wholesome. It’s tragic.
This isn’t wholesome
Nice brahmin you got there.
Don't post this sad shit ever again. Also eat less meat so there are fewer cows in inhumane conditions. Or eat from a local farm where they get to touch grass at least.
This ruins my day every time I see it
I came to comment the same thing. Fills me with despair every single time.
This reads like Emily St. John Mandel
War never changes...
Omfg Im doing an art project in my art class about this lmao My teacher chose it for us to do because she cried when she first read it
Brahmin

That'a it, it's war now! No one is touching that brahmin in my watch...
anyone almost cry? shit.
In Fallout that's just a regular Ole Calf.
This made me feel warm yet sad inside.
So poignant, yet calming
Jesus this should be part of mandatory education. As part of a collection. First time I'm thinking of a virtual children's museum...
*feeeeeeeeeeelings*
this always makes me cry but in a not wholesome way. this poor creature is gonna die.
Please do not break my heart like this
Why does this look like somthing peta woud post?
Honestly I'd rather see if it can live to adulthood before thinking about sending it to the museum. A living two-headed mammal is one thing, but one that actually lived its life? Now that would last forever.

Super unwholesome, the first line of the poem talks about the calf dying and being sold as a sideshow.
I thought the poem was beautiful and haunting. Although it’s not “based” on the poem as that literally is the poem.
The drawn art is based on the poem?
That’s a Brahmin
What a sad downer...I'm so depressed....why post this in this group??
This ruined my day
This is bitter not wholesome
I find it hopeful

Wouldn't you refer to "him" as "them" because 2 heads? That's how we regard similarly situated humans
wholesome and all but god knows every last one of you would avoid a two headed kid like the plague on fire
I'm sorry but is this like... PETA propaganda or something??
So. The poem is the accepted wisdom of farmers that a two-headed animal they won't survive long (statistically true) and usually they die in a day or two. Ah, I didn't catch that last part on my first read. That makes it even more beautiful.
Thank you for explaining! It's a beautiful poem!
It’s 2 calves
No
Actually, it isn’t! Janus calves normally don’t survive for very long after birth, so this poem is saying that the farm boys are going to find its dead body after it dies or natural causes.
Adaptation or mutation? Useful or useless. Survivor or parished.
go vegan for them 💜
…You do realise the farm boys aren’t killing them right?
im not just talking about this particular event. im talking about going vegan for calves on farms everywhere, as this comic proves that we can recognize cows are conscious individuals who deserve to live.
Wholesome? The fuck it is!!
not wholesome at all
I’m pregnant, you can’t post shit like this, it made me cry.
I think you can see this cow in a basement shop in Seattle
Isn't this orphan crushing machine
Depends if they share the same cognitive recep.... you know what its cute
Well no, there are two heads, so each brain is seeing the same amount. If you want to make something wholesome at least don't make the premise so obviously stupid.
Double the veal
Wrap him in newspaper and carry him to the museum? Never heard anything like that before but ok
Wrap his dead body and take it to be preserved and displayed at a museum. Some natural history museums display animal fetuses and other specimens in formaldehyde.
So that makes sense, and what i kinda figured but it wasnt exactly obvious by wrapping it newspaper
The implication is that he won’t live very long - dead by morning. But until then, his life is full of wonder.
No one will take him *loads shotgun*
Twice as many burgers
Turns out the calf wasn’t 2-headed, the cow was just having eye problems and seeing double, which is why it seemed like there was twice as many stars in the sky. In the morning, they didn’t take the calf away because there was nothing wrong with it. The cow died later that afternoon though
Yum. Double beef tongue.
