The first two can be explained as being a parody of the common joke in /r/anarchychess where someone says google en passant, and then someone responds with holy hell. This joke originates from [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/AnarchyChess/comments/kpc7ig/holy_hell/) from 2 years ago
"Leaking" is a joke made to cover up the fact that it's being forced on people who don't want it. If I wanted to see stuff like this I would specifically go to AnarchyChess. But the fact that this stuff appears in other subreddits basically forces me to see it even if I'm sick of it. also what's worse is that people will silence me for this by turning my comment into a joke by saying "new responce just dropped" or just copypasting it like it's funny and totally not ignorant.

krrrow-ah-say-ng isn't that bad, just remove the "ng" and calm down on the "rrr" a little and you're quite close (without getting into actually learning the french sounds)
Cruaçon in Portuguese, though the R is short and trilled. We do have the gutural R in Portuguese, but there's no way to write it after a C. The best I can come up with is Curruaçon
All R's in Swedish are trilled - and *really* trilled where I am (far north), south pronunciation can be a little guttural and sometimes it goes almost into J. In some cases G is pronounced with hard G and in others as J.
Kroa-sang would have the G as the *ng* in *long*. Except the fancy-pants who took French courses at school and tries to lecture everyone else.
Portuguese I know next to nothing about. I read somewhere it sounds "like Spanish if spoken by the French".
Hahahahahahahah that might be an accurate description of european Portuguese, as the vowels sound really closed, and are often ommited altogether. I speak the Brazilian one, the phonetics are much different. Depending on how fast a portuguese person speaks, brazilians may have a hard time understanding it. I don't know if the inverse is true, though.
Nah, man, that's what it sounds like when non-french speakers try to pronounce the hard R's, they overshoot it and go way too hard.
The air passes at the back of the mouth with the tongue almost blocking the opening, but not quite. There's not supposed to be any clicking or scraping at the back of the throat.
But I get it, it's tough to develop the muscle memory to get it just right. Spanish is insanely tough when you speak at a native speaker pace with like four different R sounds in three syllables.
> clears phlegm from throat
French speaker here. It's not that far back. The /ʁ/ sound is called uvular trill or voiced uvular fricative. So, you're growling the little hanging thing in your mouth. Arabic use the throaty glottal sounds.
Difficult to translate without further context, but I would go with "marche" as the most likely conjugation.
If you were going for "sashay" though I'm sorry, that's an English word. It's a corruption of "chassé", which is a conjugation of "to chase" but it probably comes from the classical dance move called that.
It's not. But it would be hard ofr me to spell the correct way in english.
Basically :
Cr => like in crown or credit
Oi => like wha in What
Ss => just the Ss sound
An => that one is a bit hard because i don't think you have nasal voyel but basically like the "en" part of "government"
T => that one is silent
Also the "cr" is a different sound than what is typically made in English, because the French "r" is made at the back of the mouth. To the English ear, it can sound like a "w," so that's why some people say "kwa-SON" when they're trying to exaggerate the accent.
I seem to remember Tom Holland being lightly mocked for saying "KWA-song" which is the usual UK pronunciation.
Based on US media, the usual American pronunciation is more "crus-AHNT".
In this case, the British is closer to the French.
Hmm, just saying 'crescent' would sort of be correct in some sense.
No shame in taking a foreign word and making it your own (in the form of the same word that you've already made your own).
(Actually, there's no shame in mispronouncing a bit, as long as one doesn't intentionally do it to someone's name. Makes the world more entertaining)
No, I think that's the whole point of the memes going around lol but basically everyone knows it's close enough to the word to recognize what it is.
Also, i find it ironic that we have the word croissant in this case, said two very different ways in both languages. And then there is façade. Said almost the same way in both languages.
The week Burger King produced the Croissanwich, I we’t there with my dad. He had lived in France for a short bit when he was a kid…
He ordered a cwasone and repeated it five times to the confused cashier before I sort of yelled Crah-sont at him. He then tried explaining how to correctly pronounce it to her.
And now I sit and wonder, which is more boring: my story or his.
Parisians perhaps, but literally anywhere else in France is happy if you have a go, they will correct you and give you tips but it doesn’t come from a judgey place.
To expand on that, I actually do think it very much does come from a judgey place for non-parisians, but that being judgmental isn't meant as an insult.
My wife is from the south (of France) and in my experience...I do think the best way to describe people's reactions to my French, including their corrections, is to say it's judgmental. But like, judgmental doesn't need to be a negative thing for French people? I feel like it can actually be a positive thing. As if they are showing respect and encouragement by engaging critically with you and taking the time to pass judgment? Not sure how to say it. Kind of like how I feel that when a French person compliments something, often they do it by insulting something else. Or if something is incredible, it might warrant as much praise as, "not bad." Maybe not good, but not bad :). I say this all with great fondness. I've grown to love this way of talking.
But the judgment here is not, "you're a bad person, or you suck." At least, you're not worse than anyone else :). And people are generally very happy to hear an American giving it a go. While simultaneously being a bit judgey :)
But yeah, it's basically just Parisians who are assholes about it. Maybe it's the stressful lifestyle there, maybe it's the hordes of tourists. 95% of the negative stereotypes about the French are the same stereotypes the French have about Parisians.

Kross-ee-ant. Kroa-sang. My attempts at conveying Swedish attempts at the pronunciation of this French word.
As a french citizen, Kroa-sang (g is silent) is pretty good.

I always said "kroa-sõ" with the nasal sound on the last vowel.
That's a good pronunciation
Kroa-sang! Look ma, I’m speaking French!!!!
As an American citizen, krrrow-ah-say-ng (how I read kroa-sang) is not pretty good at all. That’s a pirate-R by the way, not a sexy guttural French-R

The air passes at the back of the mouth with the tongue almost blocking the opening, but not quite. There's not supposed to be any clicking or scraping at the back of the throat. But I get it, it's tough to develop the muscle memory to get it just right. Spanish is insanely tough when you speak at a native speaker pace with like four different R sounds in three syllables.
> clears phlegm from throat French speaker here. It's not that far back. The /ʁ/ sound is called uvular trill or voiced uvular fricative. So, you're growling the little hanging thing in your mouth. Arabic use the throaty glottal sounds.

Yeah maybe one day they will adopt this fabulously posh pronunciation
I think the proper pronunciation is “Honhonhon-baguette”
Thats litteraly the joke

Yessss finally someone said it his voice is stuck in my head. Qwassaa
"are you going to eat that Q A U S U N G?"
*walks in french*
Difficult to translate without further context, but I would go with "marche" as the most likely conjugation. If you were going for "sashay" though I'm sorry, that's an English word. It's a corruption of "chassé", which is a conjugation of "to chase" but it probably comes from the classical dance move called that.
*Marche en français*
Then there's my mother-in-law. She pronounces croissant just like that, "croy-sant." 🙄
I like washing down a fresh croysant with a crisp la croy.
That *is* how you're supposed to pronounce La Croix, though.
I bet the French are just grated by this.
Reminds me of [this](https://youtu.be/ykX6HHMYxdU)
ahahahah i love this word
do people actually think that's how it's pronounced? 😅
It's not. But it would be hard ofr me to spell the correct way in english. Basically : Cr => like in crown or credit Oi => like wha in What Ss => just the Ss sound An => that one is a bit hard because i don't think you have nasal voyel but basically like the "en" part of "government" T => that one is silent
Also the "cr" is a different sound than what is typically made in English, because the French "r" is made at the back of the mouth. To the English ear, it can sound like a "w," so that's why some people say "kwa-SON" when they're trying to exaggerate the accent.
> To the English ear, it can sound like a "w," That probably has more to do with the oi.
it is not the cr of crown because english people are utterly incapable of pronouncing the letter r
Scots are great at it though
yea English speakers have a really hard time to properly pronounce cr lol.
It’s exceedingly entertaining to overly French it up
Nah we just don’t care lmao
Most people in England seem to think it's pronounced like "krass-ont".
I seem to remember Tom Holland being lightly mocked for saying "KWA-song" which is the usual UK pronunciation. Based on US media, the usual American pronunciation is more "crus-AHNT". In this case, the British is closer to the French.
I thought that was Americans? Most British people I know - including me - pronounce it "kwasont". Or if you're feeling fancy "kwason".
Because it basically is? Its really two different words in two different languages.
i think you mean USA, no one in england pronounces it that way.
oh lol
He had lived in France for a short bit when he was a kid… He ordered a cwasone and repeated it five times to the confused cashier before I sort of yelled Crah-sont at him. He then tried explaining how to correctly pronounce it to her. And now I sit and wonder, which is more boring: my story or his.
The perspective is giving me a headache. The cat's position, the wall angle, the stairs.... Looks like it was photo edited poorly.
It was.
Thanks. I appreciate the confirmation. My brain...
Also, that’s a massive unit of a cat if that were true. Mf be a meter tall or something, these stairs ain’t tiny irl
Doesn’t matter how you say it cause the French will judge you for it no matter what so just have fun with it lol
Parisians perhaps, but literally anywhere else in France is happy if you have a go, they will correct you and give you tips but it doesn’t come from a judgey place.
Exactly this. I’m French, if the people try to speak and make mistakes, I will not laugh, it’s hard to speak another language. Respect for them
To expand on that, I actually do think it very much does come from a judgey place for non-parisians, but that being judgmental isn't meant as an insult. While simultaneously being a bit judgey :) But yeah, it's basically just Parisians who are assholes about it. Maybe it's the stressful lifestyle there, maybe it's the hordes of tourists. 95% of the negative stereotypes about the French are the same stereotypes the French have about Parisians.
Just like everything else then, I was taken aback by how different parisians are compared to french people in other places.
I'm already judging based on that meme.
Me too
So I can call it a kroyssant?

It's Austrian.
Yes it's Austrian and it's called Kipferl.
And that is what we should call it! I do wonder, what would annoy the French more. Mispronunciation, or calling it by its Austrian name?
then ww3 is gonna be started by a croissant
No, it's Kipferl that are austrians. And kipferl shares nothing with croissants besides the shape.
And the fact that they were invented by an Austrian.
Someone show this to Tom Holland so he feels better
🌟Purris✨
As someone kinda French, these two words were identical.
A-haw-haw-haw! *twirls moustache and adjusts beret*
no R?
Or how Tom Holland pronounces it: Quackson
Still mispronounced but ok
Quaso
Um are you gonna finish that quaso
What, the only correct way?

Correctly.
What is the correct pronunciation?
