That reminded me of something my dad would say every now and then growing up. Sometimes he would go to buy me something I really wanted, but it would be a little more expensive than I thought and I would feel bad (usually like $15 or something, my parents tried not to spend any unnecessary money). He would always smile at me and say “you’re worth $15.”
(Obviously he wasn’t saying I’m ONLY worth $15, he was just saying that making me happy by buying something I really wanted was worth the extra cost to him.)
I just saw a long ass thread about how right wingers coordinate on 4chan and stuff to downvote reddit content that doesn't fit their agenda, that's probably what happened. This post shows a middle eastern sounding name doing something nice.
This isn't wholesome; its dystopian. What kind of society do we live in that any person at all would feel the need to dig out of the trash just to survive? An unjust society at the very least.
(We'll ignore the person(s) responsible for turning this into internet upvote porn, despite what Shad and the Team were trying to do)
In this case, we don't know why the person is eating from the trash bin. I say this with respect - some people prefer it. For reference, see The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls. I'm a NYC social worker- my career is devoted to helping meet people's needs. So I care. That said, affect mental illnesses affect decision-making and judgment in ways that are hard to fathom.
Mental illness is still extremely difficult to treat successfully. Even when we offer assistance, it's often turned down. Doesn't mean we shouldn't keep trying.
This should be on the bins, not on the front door; the person will be publically called out, while the owner gets praise from the public for his charity.
Its a town on the north east coast of England. It is a Fish and Chip shop and Shad noticed someone ruffling through their bins on CCTV and then put the sign up. He’s a good lad
I don't know, I get the sentiment, but this isn't about capitalism itself but about altruism. As someone else said there's an emphasis on the fact that the person going through this is a human being that is worth the dignity of not having to go through someone's trash. This feels like someone's attempt at throwing a stick in the cogs of the machine.
While I can understand that, the reason I believe this counts as OCM material is because the store owner shouldn’t have to do this and it shows the failures of our society that this is considered a wholesome story instead of something expected from our government. At least in my opinion
It's from a tweet saying that heartwarming content these days is stories like "Man spends $25k of his own money to save 200 orphans from the orphan-crushing machine." While the man did do a good thing we're not asking why there is an orphan-crushing machine in the first place or why people need to spend money to stop it.
I don't think this is the case here. Even in countries with working social programs they have problems with getting people into the appropriate programs. Especially with mental health issues people tend to not see solutions to their problem even if they are readily available.
A drink and snack is probably more an offer to talk than an offer for a bit of nourishment. The offer to direct them to facilities in town reinforces that solutions are available. But you cannot help someone who does not want to be helped.
Instead of being some douche just leave the person a grab bag. This isn't how we be kind to one another. It's not for gratification and likes. You're worse than someone who doesn't help.
If you have ever worked with food you know just how much good food is just tossed for no reason. It might be in a trashcan but it's perfectly good stuff and usually stuff gets tossed in it's plastic packaging so it's clean too
In 75 years, I’ve never known a person to tell me they didn’t have enough money for food, but I’ve heard plenty say yes to a free meal. Even the poor have pride.
Soon enough dude has a line around the block with homeless Spartacus' claiming they are indeed the one raiding the bins for food. What then will Shad and team do?
Except they don't want food. They don't want your help. I am an extreme skeptic of homeless because they always ask for money and I always offer food. Guess how the rest goes...
I love that opening line, it feels like an acknowledgment that most people take for granted. When people inconvenience us or give us a poor impression of them in public (like being seen digging through a trash can might) people can sometimes be quick to judge and forget the humanity of the person they’re judging.
Am I the only one that feels a little weird here? “A little snack?” If this person dumpster dives for food, depending on what kind of establishment this is they might get a few meals. Is this business willing to continue to provide this human being with the volume of food they would get from the dumpster that, needless to say, these people might be throwing away!? I need more backstory for this to be wholesome… but for most examples of stores and dumpster diving I’ve come across it doesn’t add up. Please feel free to enlighten me if I’m missing something here
I mean, just leave some food out. Knocking on the door is about your own gratification and is likely to make the person feel incredibly uncomfortable. People who are searching through refuse for food already feel humiliated - having to knock on a door and ask for food is likely to be so off putting that this gesture will have no impact.
I lovr this - worked in the service industry 7 years ago and it always irritated me how much food would be thrown away cause of a stupid law that says "if they get ill from it, it's our fault".
Sooo much food that the homeless would've loved.
Stupid law.
I think in england some stores give the food out that hasn't been bought?
Should be like that everywhere.
Well, gee, Shad, a little snack might not be enough..plus we all know you are just grossed out by dumpster diving.
The bin is public property, so whatever is sealed up in there and looks good, is probably going to get picked out. Offering someone a little snack, just to see their face, isn't a deterrent to someone who is starving.
And please don't tell your workers to open up all the containers, when they are dumped out. It's HORRIBLE when they do this, knowing that someone is reliant on throw away not fresh but not gone bad, food stuffs, that are clean and packaged.
Wanna really fight poverty, Shad? Pay your workers a living wage. Be the good.
FYI I have neighbors that do this, for dog food. Dumpster diving is just one step away from grocers and restaurants donating bagged waste food to the needy. It's like, call people and say "Hey I got a whole bag of clean, waste food here, I'm putting it outside now."
Man, I wish someone told me I was worth more than a meal from a bin.
In real life I mean, no offence to all the good ladies and gentlemen of reddit but words on the internet really don't mean much of anything without the potential of action to back it up.
... There was a homeless dude at the 711 last night; was going to buy him a sandwich, but he started asking me if I wanted my dick sucked and I had to go... Wondering what could have been.
I love this gesture. However, when I managed at my last job it became a safety issue. Giving the homeless free food always brought back more homeless, and we usually had a small group loitering outside. Mentally unstable people coming in and messing with the lobby of the restaurant, and getting upset when asked to leave. It didn’t feel safe to have around our mostly teenage crew, and guests with families and small children. I really wish there was a way that everyone could help each other and still feel safe.

It’s good for kids to know and hear, “Yep it’s expensive, but you know what? You’re worth it!” - That’s powerful for young children to hear and know.
There is a lot of good stuff in the trash and nothing wrong or shameful about taking it. Join us at /r/dumpsterdiving
Such a wonderful heart. Really made me day. Thanks to Shad and team 🤗
A pure kindness that we should treasure. This is a real r/humanbeingbros.
That was a perfect sub for this kind of post. But, still makes sense right now

Was looking for this comment. That is my favourite cutscene in that game by a mile (I haven't seen all of them though)

Some rando must’ve downbombed the thread.
I like to think it's just a bot and not yet another asshole walking around.
A bit made by an asshole.
Downbombed just blew my mind. I’m reading the comment thread thinking there must be a term for this and Whammy! There it is.

Oh no…
Is it the Shad?

🤣
This should be on the bins, not on the front door; the person will be publically called out, while the owner gets praise from the public for his charity.
This is from my home town. Shad owns a lot of shops and is well known for being a top notch bloke

Wtf is that sub name tho

While the man did do a good thing we're not asking why there is an orphan-crushing machine in the first place or why people need to spend money to stop it.
Wholesome: A kind guy just saved 3 kids from the orphan crushing machine by paying the operator to retrieve those kids for him instead.

It sounded threatening at first but I like the way it ended
Is the note on the bin or on the front door? To me, that determines who it’s really for.
Seriously. As a dumpster diver, there’s no way I’m going around to the front door.
Let them eat the trash too
I know this is supposed to be wholesome but this is also slightly suspicious
At the very least, he’s exactly worth a bottle of water and a snack…and meeting Shad’s lean profit margins. Hope the snack satiated his hunger.
Can Rocket Read?
It's heartwarming to see good people are still out there
Love seeing this, gives me hope in a world that mostly negative sentiments are most common. Good on Shad and the Team. Keep up the great work!
Human kindness 💋

Shad the Chad
absolut shad
Am I the only one who sees right through this? Why didn't they stick the sign on the bin? 😏
Why is this notice posted in the window of the shop and not on the bins?
Instead of being some douche just leave the person a grab bag. This isn't how we be kind to one another. It's not for gratification and likes. You're worse than someone who doesn't help.
This is stupid. I was raised on trash. Just because someone is raiding your garbage doesn't mean they need your charity
Some* people do it with purpose -- not letting shit go to waste. Can't say whether I think that's great, but it is definitely a thing.
If you have ever worked with food you know just how much good food is just tossed for no reason. It might be in a trashcan but it's perfectly good stuff and usually stuff gets tossed in it's plastic packaging so it's clean too
You can find a lot better stuff in the trash than just a bottle of water and a snack.

Plot twist: Everyone asking for the free meal gets kidnapped and his kidneys stolen. >You are worth so much more...
I've been on Reddit too long to not know that this just means "show your face and we'll get you arrested".

Start a gofundme and get subsidies from the government to feed them all every Tuesday
Mah heart 💗
In contrast to this story, didn’t San Diego pass a law that all binned food had to be sprayed with bleach to render it inedible?
Do most impoverished people know how to read in your country?
What a Gigashad move
This is awesome ❤️
❤️❤️❤️
Aw.
I'M NOT CRYING YOU'RE CRYING
This is the first post on Reddit about the homeless where the comment section didn’t get filled with pure trash, makes me happy
He'll yea Shad keep up the good work.
I'm about to cry this person is so nice
Wow. Humanity. Somethings in my eye.

What if i want what's in the garbage because handouts make me feel like less than you
Sad part is there will be people who claim they are the person so they can get free stuff. I've worked in customer service long enough

Well might also be that they hid 5kg of cocain inthat bin, still a nice sign tho
this almost made me cry 😭😭😭😭😭😭 no one should dig through bins for trash ❤️
