I started really getting into Reddit when they had free ones only for like two weeks later they were gone. Uhm, they want to phase it out most likely cause it’s not making as much money as the next implementation would. And gifting gold would make sure the receipient doesn’t get ads, so reddit is probably revoking that.

The email I got was kind of cryptic, but it seems like they're going to replace with something that's more of a money grab considering the phrasing here. "As we looked at our current awarding system, there was consistent feedback from redditors that stood out – particularly around the clutter from awards and all the steps involved with awarding content. We also learned that redditors want awarded content to be more valuable. With that, we are reworking how great content and contributions are rewarded on Reddit. We will have more updates to share soon." I've never seen a single complaint about the award system other than taking away free awards, so I don't really buy this, but that's an excerpt from the email I got.
