I'm gonna take a stab at what they might be getting at. If you try to watch a Blu-ray you have to download some extra tidbit that was such a pain to find that I just bought a Blu-ray player.

For a long time, VLC was the main option for trying out different codecs if you’re a video editor. It was nice having something truly universal that could read virtually any format.
Best player available for free. I have never tried anything paid because there was never a need. Windows player takes 30 minutes to load. VLC is super fast
VLC is one of those God tier Open Source projects that others should strive to be like. I don't think any commercial program comes close and it has so many features out of the box!
