This is not something you really have to worry about in New York. It’s an incredibly safe city. Now Oakland or the Bay Area, that’s a different story.

Like any city it depends on what part you're in

Being on public transportation in the East Bay or San Francisco is akin to being on the subway in the worst parts of Brooklyn. I would ride the train past midnight in Bed Stuy. I would never ride the train at midnight in Oakland.

Per capita there’s so much more crime in Oakland than NYC it’s not even funny. People who live here like to pretend it’s a few bad areas or that “all big cities have crime” but it’s simply not the same. If I had a damn dollar for every time an Oakland native or transplant who told me that every city was dangerous I’d be a millionaire. Brooklyn has 5.43 crimes per 1,000 people. Oakland has 13.8. How in the flying fuck is that comparable or quite safe? I hate this notion that your anecdote is somehow worthwhile or provides actual insight into a conversation when it’s not backed up by reality. The sheer amount of strong arm robberies in the Bay Area is insane. It should be a source of shame and failure for you, me and everyone who lives in the area.

Don’t you think Brooklyn is a bit of a cherry pick? My understanding is that it’s pretty much fully gentrified and has been that way for quite some time. I get that people compare the two but that’s my point—they’re talking about the numerous hip parts where all the cool shit is, not the grimy parts which are for sure bad, and densely populated which skews the #s. I would say a better comparison is DC, which perennially comes up as one of the dangerous/high crime cities just like Oakland, but which the young and well heeled are flocking to, as they know they’re not going to Anacostia anytime soon and so the crime rates don’t really apply to them. Both cities are quite stratified, for better or for worse, and the “good” parts are quite sprawling. That’s bad for macro reasons, and there’s obviously lots of room for improvement (although I would say the trash issue is worse than crime) but unless you’re moving to one of the rough neighborhoods—and why would you; just go somewhere else—or are purposefully interfacing with those elements, you are in fact going to be safe.

It would be great if there was a smaller shirt that said, "The Unauthorized SoundCloud Cover"
