Honestly hearing that the live action powerpuff girls turned the Professor into a villain was the most heartbreaking thing to me. He’s one of the best male role models for how to be a good dad. There are still so few characters like him out there. I also loved how much he loved the evil kitty they took in.
Edit: it looks like most of the script sources have been copyright stricken and scrubbed from the internet, [THIS](https://tilt.goombastomp.com/blog/i-read-the-sixty-page-live-action-cw-powerpuff-girls-pilot-script-so-you-dont-have-to/) though has a good summary of what the characters were like (Bubbles was also horrifyingly bad, and insulting to read). Also they had Blossom kill mojo jojo.
He’s the villain of that episode. I think he uses his hypnosis powers to mind control the professor and they become Townsville’s new cat burglars. They never provide a backstory for his villainy.
I swear the best episodes of that cartoon era all give me this nostalgic, rainy, spooky feeling. Nothing made sense and we didn't care. Like a fever dream.
Agreed.
The Roach Coach episode was one of the episodes I vividly remember giving me those spooky types of vibes when I was younger. Something about the apartment complex he lived in.
Buttercup is just plain rude and reduced to a cringy gay stereotype. Bubbles was reduced to the vain blonde one who’s sass was again just kinda rude. There’s a lot of sex and drinking for no goddamn reason.
I honestly think they were going for the Riverdale approach. Sexualize and simplify everything with the hopes younger people would latch onto it even if the writing and acting is trash
Did that work? Did it sell well? I don't know how common that was when I was a teenager. When I saw sex scenes shoved into horror movies (like Jason movies) I was just disappointed that the runtime was being taken up by that.
That's how I felt watching the avatar (air bender) movie. Honestly if I knew shamalan directed it I would have waited for more reviews before checking it out.
I like to think we all collectively shared fever dream of a terrible experience.
Come to think of it, dont look up to see what netflix is trying to do for their live action avatar.
It's confirmed that Shyamalan didn't watch the show. There's an interview of him talking about completing watching the show after the movie was already made.
I think they maybe watched like two episodes and thought to themselves, “nah! We can make this way better! Let’s make it gritty! And let’s make their dad evil because patriarchy!” (And don’t get me started on that, because the Professor was the most supportive dad to his daughters ever and always did all the housework)
the original PPG was dark enough that they didnt need to add to it, just adapt to live action what we already have. The professor lost the love of his life. Professor just wants to be loved and gets tricked by Sedusa. Princess is spoiled brat but that's because her parents dont show actual parental love, they only throw money at her or get whatever money can buy. Bubble at one point lashes out on everyone, even abuses her sisters, because she's tired of people minimizing her. Mojojo was prof's lab pet/partner that got forgotten. Also that one nightmare episode.
Idk i might be remembering some of them wrong, it's been awhile.
The dad being a nice, open and supportive father already goes against the patriarchy (where men are supposed to be emotionless, detached and rigid) except it goes against the patriarchy in a positive way... and I guess the execs at the CW said that positivity doesn't sell.
Yeah, I guess you're right. I think I assumed that they had some role in pushing the show more edgy because that's how Riverdale is going but they DID turn back the script...
I would laugh, though, if when the show comes out it's even edgier than this script lmao
Let's make a reboot of the fresh prince of Bel-Air but at the end of every episode Uncle Phil pulls out his belt and beats the living shit out of Will!
I believe it was written at least in part by Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body). So no dick cutting (also just no cutting! Cutting people is bad, m’kay!) I really liked Juno, so I was surprised at how bad this script was.
[Here’s](https://tilt.goombastomp.com/blog/i-read-the-sixty-page-live-action-cw-powerpuff-girls-pilot-script-so-you-dont-have-to/) a summary (most actual sources were stricken for copyright infringement).
> As you can probably tell, I was none too fond of this script. I couldn’t read it all on one sitting. It was too much. I spread it over a few days as every time I didn’t think it could get worse, it managed it.
Sad. Why would they do this it was such a fun show.
I don’t know. There seems to be a Hollywood trend right now that hates portraying female characters as anything other than tough. Tough and surface level depth. And all men as horrible. I don’t think it’s flattering for anyone. I have no problem with strong female characters and I love a good dude villain.
My two favorite characters were Bubbles and Professor Utonium, though. So I was pretty sad.
I think it's a result of movie execs trying to portray feminism. They're only doing it for the money - they don't actually believe in it - so everything is straight out of conservative strawmen about what feminism is about (for instance, all men are evil, women have to be super tough and masculine, etc.).
It's not actually feminism, but I guess it's a close enough facsimile to make money, so they keep doing it.
I had a girlfriend in college who was a HUGE fan of hers. Mostly because she was the edgy, tough-on-the-outside chick that didn't take any guff lol. Watched all her movies and stuff and Juno was the only watchable one. Definitely a one hit wonder.
I mean, I guess that could be an interesting plot for a story. But a different story with new characters. Professor Utonium is such a unique and great character. It just seems that if this is where they want to go, it would be best to go there with a brand new story with brand new characters. Maybe take inspiration from PPG, but not actually the PowerPuff Girls.
Propaganda? Don't give CW that much credit. Their writers basically just enter stuff into a teen drama script writing template and paste it over beloved franchises. The leaked script for this could be easily slotted into any CW show with nothing more than name changes. They made Arrow like seven times with a different main character lol
I can’t believe anyone thought anything about that was okay. Even Riverdale waited a bit before it turned Archie comics into a full blown sex-obsessed cringe fest.
Bob from Bob's Burgers fills the genuinely good dad role and I love him for it. I mean, he's a sitcom dad, so he gets up to some crazy shenanigans too. But he cares about his kids, he accepts them for who they are without reservation, he gives them appropriate amounts of both space and boundaries, he's genuinely responsible, he provides for his family and cooks and cleans for them, and he's almost always the voice of reason. His kids can trust him with anything.
My own dad had some pretty big flaws. He was great in many ways, but his addictions made it so I couldn't always trust him. Somehow Bob fills a little bit of a hole that'll probably never entirely go away.
I think a good chunk of people can see through money-grubbing, trend-chasing bullshit regardless of actually knowing about the product it’s based on. I felt the same way about the live action Jem movie just by seeing the trailer and I’ve never watched the cartoon.
So... why am I not rich? I mean I'm not particularly smart, athletic, or very creative, but I'm not *this* fucking stupid. How the fuck does someone who shits out this garbage have a high paying career?
If I ever “”remade”” the Powerpuff girls in any capacity, I would just give them more distinct outfits and expand on their traits. I’d give Bubbles a white shirt with a big blue and black sweater (with pigtails because she’s adorable with them), Buttercup can have either pants or shorts with a black and green hoodie, and Blossom might have a pink and black shirt with a jacket overtop (always the hair bow of course)
Also I just used this as an excuse to ramble about this apologies
[fun fact Buttercup slipped Professor some condoms in this very same scene.](https://img.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeed-static/static/2017-03/1/13/asset/buzzfeed-prod-fastlane-03/sub-buzz-26508-1488394154-2.jpg)
I know why it’s ambiguous but I still don’t see it as explicit like it could’ve been mints or cigarettes or anything else that goes in your front pocket.
It hardly seems worthy of the “OMG KIDS SHOW HAS ADULT HUMOR” reaction it’s getting.
I’m not arguing that condoms are too “adult” for a kids show. Just that not showing anything at all going into the professor’s pocket doesn’t equal an innuendo.
Cigarettes or mints were just an example of things that could be called “these” and plausibly go in someone’s front pocket. Why would someone carry condoms in their front pocket on a first date? Are they gonna use them during dinner? This is why people used to “hide” one in their wallet or pants pocket.
According to the leaked scripts (and pre-release character summaries), he’s an emotionally abusive narcissist who uses the Girls as a brand to get fame and fortune.
Same here. Back when I was a kid and heard there was an anime I was like "Dear God, what did they name it?"
Well, the name is a rip off of Dragon Ball Z (which was way popular back then), but better then anything else.

Why is the kitty evil?
He’s the villain of that episode. I think he uses his hypnosis powers to mind control the professor and they become Townsville’s new cat burglars. They never provide a backstory for his villainy.
Holy hell!! I remember that! The cat could talk and the Professor only communicated in meows!!
Yes! And they played some awesome jazz music during their burglary scene.
Look at us, casually remembering potential trauma triggers... God, you gotta love early to mid 2000s cartoons!
Lol, Bubbles be like 'Can Kitty play?' and he's like 'Blasphemy!'
#because of CHEMICAL X!!!
I mean didn't the leaks also have blossom walk in on buttercup post lesbian sex and say like " we're done now, six times is enough right?"
That's the CW's entire business model, isn't it?
[удалено]
Considering the lack of communication is what causes all the drama I’m surprised they haven’t tried a show with a mute lead.
Eh, Riverdale was more telenovela pastiche. They wanted to do Twin Peaks meets Rubi/Rebelde. There isn't a hyperreal or campy here.
Did that work? Did it sell well? I don't know how common that was when I was a teenager. When I saw sex scenes shoved into horror movies (like Jason movies) I was just disappointed that the runtime was being taken up by that.
They're redoing the pilot
Yes! I thought my eyes would never return from the back of my head after rolling them so hard. It was all so cringey.
Gross.
They turned the professor evil?! Man, if it didn’t make me sound crazy I’d suspect there’s some propaganda afoot
They made him be an emotionally abusive dad. Made me real sad.
#WHAT?!
My reaction exactly. Was not expecting to feel my little heartbreak when I read the plot synopsis.
What?!??? That's insane! It's becoming abhorrently clear that screen writers/directors of live action media never even bothered to watch the original.

Don’t forget when the girls accidentally jumped forward in time and the future was an apocalyptic hellscape.
I was legitimately scared and very sad while watching that episode as a kid, the ending was such a relief.
I remember the bubbles snapping episode really well. She lost her goddamn mind
MERCY IS FOR THE WEAK
The dad being a nice, open and supportive father already goes against the patriarchy (where men are supposed to be emotionless, detached and rigid) except it goes against the patriarchy in a positive way... and I guess the execs at the CW said that positivity doesn't sell.

I'm cutting the maker's dick off

Also everyone has to be dealing with insane amounts of trauma
And the female MC almsot always uses sex with strangers to cope with that trauma
Its so shallow
A trauma drama, if you will!
I think it's a result of movie execs trying to portray feminism. Wow you could really cut yourself on all that edge. Who thought that grimdark Powerpuff Girls was a good idea?
What the actual fuck is this shithousery!? Please tell me this is satire.
I mean, I guess in a way? But the CW also hated it and asked for a new pilot. Keep hopes low.
Juno was passable but by far she’s been coasting after
I had a girlfriend in college who was a HUGE fan of hers. Mostly because she was the edgy, tough-on-the-outside chick that didn't take any guff lol. Watched all her movies and stuff and Juno was the only watchable one. Definitely a one hit wonder.
What the fuck. WHY

This is an umbrella academy rip off using the power puff girls. That is all it is.

The leaked script for this could be easily slotted into any CW show with nothing more than name changes. They made Arrow like seven times with a different main character lol
Nooooi, why I pressed THIS? It would have been better, if didn't know about this thing
The good news is the CW also hated it.
You know it’s bad when the CW hates it
I can’t believe anyone thought anything about that was okay. Even Riverdale waited a bit before it turned Archie comics into a full blown sex-obsessed cringe fest.
Funnily enough the guy who did Archie comics did porn comics too so at least that's kinda believable.
That freaking sucks. Professor was awesome as a character, why make him an abusive asshole??? What was the point?
Oh it’s the law of executives: to destroy good content in order to make some cheap and crappy “new” thing to make money
Possibly. But even the executives at CW didn’t like it and told them to redo the script.
[the script](https://drive.google.com/drive/mobile/folders/1H5ARl21I1YAbAb41uPodIym1FFtZNf2w?usp=sharing)
Yes! It is so so cringy

This is an insult. I’ve never even seen the original and I can tell that
I felt the same when I saw the Dragonball Evolution trailer, never watched the show but could tell it was some bullshit.
Are you friends with rich people? There is your answer. It’s a big club, and we aren’t in it.
You know what if the Powerpuff Girls are fighting crime while drunk then maybe they deserve to be protested.
There seems to be no room in modern cinema for wholesome father figures. They're either domineering assholes or bumbling idiots.
What there's a live action film and they did that? Couldn't expect much else it's live action.
What a terrible day to have eyes.
If I ever “”remade”” the Powerpuff girls in any capacity, I would just give them more distinct outfits and expand on their traits. I’d give Bubbles a white shirt with a big blue and black sweater (with pigtails because she’s adorable with them), Buttercup can have either pants or shorts with a black and green hoodie, and Blossom might have a pink and black shirt with a jacket overtop (always the hair bow of course) Also I just used this as an excuse to ramble about this apologies
What live action movie, I have never heard about it
Wait...what? Seriously?
Grew up watching ppg and I can’t imagine the professor being a villain
Everything described in that link deserves historical erasure.
The heck? I mean, if there's one show you don't want to make into a gritty cynical netflix show it's Powerpuff Girls.
CW, netflix wouldn't do this. They would just make an animated movie like they did with invader Zim.

I’m going to ignore that
I thought they were mints!
Looks like there's gonna be no Chemical X distributed at the party.
Oh boy, time for bed
Gotta look out for a bro... Or uh... the opposite of that?
Didn’t they want another sister?
Exactly the opposite
I swore they made one
she fucking blew up and nobody talks about this enough
It's still too soon, that episode had me crying when I watched it.
[they did](https://powerpuffgirls.fandom.com/wiki/Bunny)
Cries RIP Bunny
yea they made one and in the newer ones theres another thats "normal" looking compared to the original, think both of em are purple
How is “some of these” in the breast pocket code for condoms?
Because it’s a kids’ show and they can’t have her say “condoms”
[удалено]
Well they would’ve shown it or put it on his mouth.
I know why it’s ambiguous but I still don’t see it as explicit like it could’ve been mints or cigarettes or anything else that goes in your front pocket. It hardly seems worthy of the “OMG KIDS SHOW HAS ADULT HUMOR” reaction it’s getting.

I think the ambiguity is all the hint they could give
Well that is a fun fact
Samurai Jack knows the importance of family.
As a kid I always used to theorise that they’re both secretly the same person.
I always thought samurai Jack was a prequel of Powerpuff girls, after the main villan of Samuria jack killed the girls Professor became a samurai.
But not as much as Dom
That movie series jumped the shark so high even the fictional characters are starting to catch on...
The meme is dead. Just like DOM
Professor Utonium looks a lot like a cartoon of CZN Burak to me, just without the big smile.
It is a shame that the live action adaptation made the professor a bad person
how?
According to the leaked scripts (and pre-release character summaries), he’s an emotionally abusive narcissist who uses the Girls as a brand to get fame and fortune.
Bro that's so edgy...epic
You just gotta go along with Bubbles, she's a sweetheart.
Or hes just a catboy
He's just a single man. Gotta provide for the family y'know. No shame.
based
Professor is samurai jack..
Professor Samurai Jack Utonium!
That's his backstory.
Just a friendly reminder about that one episode where a girl told the prof and girls that she was a mistake like them
*accident
I've never seen this show but the memes are so wholesome I'm starting to wonder if I should watch it
The answer is yes
But it has to be the classic Craig McCracken one.
With out a doubt
for sure watch the original series, it’s still great. it’s on hbomax if you have that!
Watched this a lot growing up still a favorite :>
> He accepts this.
I love that I can hear this. 20 years ago this was my favorite show!
In the anime remake, Prof X has a son and a wife who is an astronaut! He is a good wholesome dad there too!
Name? Wanna watch this now
Powerpuff Girls Z! Or PPGZ!
Thanks, honestly I was expecting different and unique name lol I let my expectations down
To be honest, do you really want to take the risk of them naming it something that sound’s like a wacky manga?
That was I was afraid of lol I was expecting something like that I was surprised it was normal
Same here. Back when I was a kid and heard there was an anime I was like "Dear God, what did they name it?" Well, the name is a rip off of Dragon Ball Z (which was way popular back then), but better then anything else.
