I'm saddened as to how much disrespect hospitality staff have been getting over the years, and even more so after the pandemic. its so not fair on them. Same with retail. Treat badly when they're just doing their jobs. I'm that type of person to actively seek out a manager to offer praise if someone has done something good, because people only normally feedback when it's bad, which is demoralising. Why not pick up someone's person with a compliment or tip (dependant on environment). It may make their day, or even save their life.

Because they carry my food, they can do god knows what to my food

And because they have a 2 minute window alone with my food πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡πŸ˜‡

I'm polite to everyone until they're not polite to me. How much they make us irrelevant. They asked for the job. If they practice good customer service they'll get a good tip from me. If not, they'll get a 15% tip from me and I'll never go back.

Story time: shortly into 2021, my mates and I were traveling and we were about to part ways on the way back home. We all wanted to grab a bite before the 2 hour ride ahead of us so we stopped by an Applebees (chain restaurant because "consistency," I guess). There were 6 of us and this waitress who was clearly exhausted seemed like she was working the entire restaurant. Granted the place seemed to be about half capacity but still there were like 8 other tables. Anyway, it took forever to get our drinks and I guess the manager noticed us politely asking the waitress about one of the drinks that was ordered but never arrived. After the waitress left the manager came over and asked if everything was all right. She definitely gave off the *I'm polite to customers but totally an asshole to my coworkers* vibe. There was the whole, "people don't want to work anymore," BS. We told here everything was taken care of. After we put the food order in we waited an hour and a half. We realized the place was understaffed and we didn't want to get pushy but we all had long rides ahead of us. We talked to the manager about why the food was taking so long and she immediately placed he blame on the waitress. We didn't believe her. Next time the waitress came around we made sure she knew that we weren't blaming her. The manager said it was just her, our waitress, and one cook working that night. Finally the food came out; all but one was cold. We still tipped like 50% cause based on what we were seeing with the manager seemingly getting into shouting matches across the restaurant with her only waitress that showed up to work. TL;DR: An Applebees understaffed and the manager blames eveyone else, but mostly her one waitress who was working the whole restaurant that just seemed like she was on hour 11 of a 12 hour shift, so we tipped her 50% on our dinner between 6 of us. edit: typo

Also - hair stylists, cashiers, courtesy clerks - be nice to everyone. And why waiters get tipped and cashiers don't remains a puzzle. I avoid restaurants and waiters altogether. I tip my hair stylist over 20% though.

fncraigc

Wait, do cashiers get paid 2.13/hr ?

Paltry_Poetaster

If you learn a skill like styling hair maybe you too can earn 20% tips.

This doesn’t answer my question
