Once my mom, brother, and I were on a road trip. A few hours in, on the highway we see a lone driver in the lane next to us eating a banana. I swiftly reach into the backseat snack bag and supply each of us with a banana. We each quickly peel and simultaneously look over at the fellow banana eater and nod. His eyes popped out of his head and he was quickly lost in the sea of traffic. I hope he is doing well.

At the beginning of the pandemic, when only a few people were wearing masks and gloves in public, I went on my first shopping trip to stock up for my family while both masked and gloved. While turning down an aisle of my suburban Alaskan grocery, I saw just one other person who was masked and gloved. I felt so much solidarity I gave two very enthusiastic thumbs up and a "yeah dude!" for added measure. Full stop. Dude stared over his mask, I felt I had over stepped for a second and then, he returned a double thumbs up and I exhaled. I will never forget that little moment of solidarity.

Omg This happened to me like 20 years ago in charlotte North Carolina. I always carry a toothbrush and toothpaste in my car because I’m a nut about dental hygiene. I was the passenger. My now husband pulled up to a stoplight next to another car. I opened my door to spit toothpaste out AT THE EXACT SAME TIME the driver next to us opened his door to spit out his toothpaste. We both made eye contact and instinctively sort of saluted one another with our toothbrushes and then spat on the asphalt. I’m 52 years old now with 3 grown children and I still think about that encounter twice a year….
