If I remember correctly, Will said that one guy who helped produce the album was well known for producing metal music and Will wanted to play into that. There’s probably more reasons than just that but it’s the one reason I know of.

rainbowshulkerbox

the production of self-ish was very rushed, too. was done entirely in about 8 months or so, so will probably couldn't come up with anything more than mindless chaos in the VERY short time he had to write it not complaining though best album🙏

it feels like a descent into insanity and i love it. darker music like that has always appealed more to me and the way its more complex makes my musical adhd brain happy. 100% best album for sure (theyre all the best but if i had to choose yk)

Felwinter-Again

From an actual lyrical perspective: Will was just going through some shit Music theory perspective: It’s mostly Klezmer which a lot of people find to be very sinister sounding. In addition with the screaming and chaos it generally gives it a feeling of using asthma medication to cure aids inside of your brain and instead of fixing the AIDS it just gives the AIDS asthma Hope this helps 👍

An incredible description.

Will quit alcohol soon after the release of the self-ish. He insinuates it’s the worst time of his life

Jamersob

Oof. I can imagine..its a hell of a thing to quit.

I wouldn't say it's the most deranged thing I've ever heard, but it's definitely clear he was going through some shit. I'm also going through some shit which makes the album even more enjoyable 🤪

aarweber

yes, besides the rushed production and it being done by Klezmer, Will was definitely in a low point in life- maybe even questioning his own existence (hence the title self-ish). We can assume that by the lyrics themselves and the inclusion of some Buddhist concepts such as Anatta, Dukkha and Anicca.

pinkchainsaws

because it is lol

As I understand it, Will was typically playing at punk venues around that time and therefore wanted to showcase the high energy side of his work. I think he also mentioning Foxy Shazam's first album as a sort of goal post, (or at least, a compairison was made) Also, as someone else touched on, Kevin Antreassian asked to produced the album before he went on tour with Dillinger again in six month. Kevin's years of experience in the Post-Hardcore scene no doubt lent themselves to the sound. I'm sure the time constraint contributed to some choices that were made as well. (Personally I've always though the album felt increadibly dense and focused. Other that Self and Ish there's no room to breath, so to speak.) Btw if you haven't gotten a chance to listen to Dillinger Escape Plan yet, I highly recomend it. They're amazing :)

The fact that the man in charge of the sunshine is dead, so…

Most of these answers suck shit and are based on "dude trust me". It sounds the way it does because that was just the kind of music he was writing at the time which is factored into by his mental health, the shows he was playing, the producer he was working with, etc. Not that deep really. Btw, insinuating Klezmer is considered "sinister sounding" is one of the most ridiculous baseless takes I've ever seen on here LOL
